Hello Everyone,

Here are some ideas for articles and essays that you might consider (although I encourage you to write essays and articles about any topic that you would like).

Here are some general ideas and thoughts about article and essay topics:

1) A photo essay about a subject of your choice. (You must use photographs that you have taken, or from someone who gave you permission to post the photos)

2) A description of your travels and experiences through Russia, Belarus, or Ukraine. (You can of course include photographs that you have taken to illustrate your story).

3) You can research an article about anything that interests you about Russia: Russian History, Current events, Russian culture, Russian-Western relationships and marriage, Russian sports, Russian fishing, or whatever interests you.

Here are some more specific article and essay topic ideas:

-A Russian woman's adventure moving and adjusting to life in England (or Australia, or the United States, or Denmark)

-Attitudes about Russian Women as shown in Russian Fairy Tales

-The History of Russian Women in Russia

-Russian Holiday Traditions

-How ex-Soviet states and people feel about Russia & the Soviet Union. (How peope from ex-Soviet states like Latvia and Georgia feel about Russia, Russians, and Soviet influence and past occupation. This topic can include how people from countries heavily "influence" by the former Soviet Union- like Poland- feel).

-What you were taught as a Russian child about America and the West. (what were you taught at school, on Russian TV, by the Russian Government, etc.)

-What it is like for a Russian woman to raise children in her new foreign country. (What is it like to raise your children in England, Australia, or America?)

-What I learned from dating Western men (mistakes I've made and learned from, what I learned about American/ Western culture, advice I'd give to others)

-Life in Russia Today

-What a Russian woman has learned about American culture by being married to an America man (or what a Russian woman has learned about her native country from her marriage to her non-Russian husband)

-A Russian woman's (or man's) experiences traveling through America (or their new country). What was interesting for you to see for the first time?

-Russian trains (history, experiences riding and traveling on Russian trains)

-What it is like to ride the bus in America (or your new country?) How are buses and mass transportation different in Russia/ Ukraine/ Belarus than in your new country?

-The Russian mafia (what a Western person should know about the Russian mafia, your personal experiences with the Russian mafia, what the Russian mafia is really like?)

-Cultural Differences Between Russians, Belarusians, and Ukrainians (what really are the differences between Russians, Belarusians, and Ukrainians- or the differences between the three countries?)

-An average Russian person's view of the West and life there...

-Prejudice that you have experienced as a Russian woman living in America or the West. Have you experienced prejudice? You can write about some of your specific experiences.

-What you believe is the average American's or European's attitude towards Russia.

-What I was told as a child about Russia (how our culture educated us about Russia)

-Russia in Western culture (films, tv, news, etc.)

-America as it is portrayed and presented in Russian culture

-What you should know about traveling to Russia (a beginners guide and primer). What recommendations would you give a Western person traveling through Russia for the first time? What kinds of things should a foreign travelor see and experience? What thigns should they be careful of and avoid?

-Why Russian Women Want to move to the West... (what are the different reasons? What were your specific reasons and circumstamces? What did your family and parents think about you moving to the West?)

-A young woman's feeling about growing up in Russia (what was it like for a young Russian woman to grow up in Russia? Where there particular challenges of being a young Russian woman in Russia?)

-Dating and Romance between Russian Teenagers (do you notice that there is something different between Russia and American/Western teenagers?)

-Child pornography in Russia (an unpleasant subject, but are Russian children being protected enough? Is the Russian government doing enough to stop child pronography in Russia?)

-Alcoholism in Russia. (what is the real state of alcoholism in Russia? Why do you think that there is an alcohol problem in Russia?)

-White slavery in Russia (Russian women taken outside of Russia and held as indentured prostitutes. One of Lena's friends was actually lured to Italy with a false promise of a job, her passport was taken away, and was forced into prostitution there before being rescued by an Italian man. Do you know of any similar stories so that the world can be educated about white slavery and forced prostitution of Russian women?)

-How Russians See America (what does the average Russian person think of America? What view of the Russian living in Russia are correct, and which are false beliefs and impressions?)

-The Importance of Vodka in Russian Culture and Society (When did Russians first start drinking vodka? What importance does it have in Russian culture?)

-What is the "Russian Soul"? (How can you best describe the idea or feeling of "the Russian Soul" to someone who is not Russian? What are some examaples that show or express or illustrate the Russian Soul?)

-The Importance and Role of the Russian Family in Russia. (What is the Russian family like? What are the roles of each member of the Russian family? What is the role of a Russian woman in the Russian family?)

-(I know that almost all Russian women are honest and have good intentions, but....) What percentage of Russian women are NOT honest with Western men? How many Russian women want to come to the West just for a better life, and plan on leaving their Western husband some day? (Do you know of personal examples of Russian women who do not haave honest intentions with Western men? What advice would you give to a Western man about recognizing whether a woman is honest with him or not?)

-Russian holidays (what are the Russian holidays, and what are the customs and traditions during those Russian holidays? Or, you can choose ONE Russian holiday and write about that).

-If you have been married to a Western or American man, and your marriage did not work out, what do you think were the reasons that your marriage didn't work out? What did you learn from your experience? Was marriage to a Western man more difficult or different than you thought? What would you do different next time? What advice would you give to both Western men and Russian women about making a Russian-Western marriage survive and last?

-How ex-Soviet states and people feel about Russia & the Soviet Union. (How peope from ex-Soviet states like Poland and Georgia feel about Russia, Russians, and Soviet influence and past occupation).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Throughout the centuries most part of the modern Poland belonged to the Russian Empire. But Poland has never been one of the Soviet republics!

Posted by: Khashyar

Yes, R-Blue.... You are right...

Perhaps it would be better worded "how do people of Poland feel about being heavily influenced by the Soviet Union).

(I'm still working on revising the questions).

Thanks for your feedback.

I was born in Georgia. What to tell you about Georgia? It was a wonderful country for many centuries,a nice place for Russian and European elite society to spend a nice time. History of Georgia is very complecated, for many centuries Georgia was occupied by mongolo-tatars( Timur Leng), arabs,Iran....every year georgians had a bunch of wars.. so in 17XX (I don't remember the exact year) georgian king went to Russia and asked russian zar for defence and help,so russians came to Georgia. After this agreement with Russia georgians had wonderful opportunity to get best education in russian educational institutions and just to go to western countries,to develop economy and create the better life. What happened after 1917? In 1924 Georgia got independence from Russia but in 1925 communists made "georgian" revolution and took the pover over the country. In soviet time life in Georgia was wonderful-ppl coud make better money (I don't know about Moscow) because almost everything was corrapted...or you could make some "extra" money without paying taxes....I love my childhood-theatres,interesting intelligent ppl around me all the time,my parent's University... But I'm blond and for georgians I was always alian in spite of Georgian was my first language. They didn't accept my white skin and blond hair..... In 1991 Georgia wanted to get independence so we got a new president Gamsahurdia. His politics was to make more contacts with back east (Iran,Turkey) and not to contact with Russia.Russia didn't want to lose Georgia so we had this ugly civil war....horrible war...many wars... russians were killed by georgians.... everybody was afraid to go out,we had no food,no bread,no jobs....it was a horrible crysis for all of us.Most of my school friends left Georgia.... I left it too....may be in 10 years I will go there again to visit brother...
Nobody loves russians in past Soviet countries. But russians didn't make any harm-they built economy, cities, factories, gave good education to everybody.
This all nations used russians and than they tried to get rid of them...In Georgia in 1991-1993 was a big shame to speak Russian. It was dangerous to walk on the streets if you had blond hair. Now all (criminal too)georgians came to Russia to make black money ...
What to tell you more? I don't miss Georgia now because I left it in 1993. I saw it in my dreams almost every night for 2 years...I missed it... but now I'm happy here with my husband.

Thanks for posting your ideas about an article about the history of Georgia...

It sounds like a wonderful place...

Your ideas for the article about Georgia sound great... Perhaps you can read over your thoughts, look over the questions on the list, and then write more of your ideas down....

I don't know much about Georgia, and I think an article about Georgia and your experience growing up there (and Georgia's history) would be very interesting.

I think if you write about your personal stories living and growing up in Georgia, then that would also be interesting for others to read.

And, don't worry about grammar mistakes and spelling mistakes.... I can fix those later...

Hi Everyone,

In case anyone is worried about not writing an article in perfect English, I wanted to let you know that it is o.k. if there are spelling and grammatical mistakes in the article that you write.

I was a newspaper reporter and a writer, and I will make any grammatical changes that need made.

Your thoughts and ideas and experiences are what are interesting for others to read, so feel free to express yourself in the article that you write.

Khashuar, thanks a lot offering grammar help.... It is great!!! My husband doesn't want to correct my English because he thinks it is so cute... So I am not afraid to make any mistakes-I learn more and more English every day.

Posted by: Khashyar

Hi Tami

I'm not saying that you need a lot of grammar help... I just want you to feel as comfortable as possible to write as much as you want, without being afraid of making mistakes.

I'd rather say a few words about how did I feel when I first got here.
Please note: I am ok now.

When first we went out I was shocked to see how laud people get at different places, like restaurants and bars.
I was also surprised to
watch how waitress ~behaves~ At that time, I thought it's pretty rude to chat and joke with customers, while they strictly supposed to take care of their business like in Russia.A waiter simply serves and doesn't really think to entertain customer. He serves-We eat, that's it.
I thought American waitresses are overly friendly.( sometimes I still think that way)

Everybody knows that California is a nice place to live, but at the same time, it's different from any other part of US.
Unfortunately I though that most of Americans might be like Californians...I was pleasantly surprised to meet really nice people in other states.
I found out that lots of people from CA has no interest in any other cultures, except they would ask traditional question: where are you from??( they ask me that less and less now )
When I would respond: seniors were freaking out, younger did not developed any further interest in asking more questions.Sort of ahh..whatever..That was truly different, you know how people back in Russia are interested in cultures of other countries.

good stuff is coming up.
I loved:
Big houses , since back there everybody lives in tiny apartments.
Driving -it much mooore comfortable that riding in metro

American guys are much nicer than Russian, but they have their own problems:I would say Lack of courtesy. They don't know how to be a real gentlemen, how to impress European girl.Russian boys are moooore sophisticated here. Unfortunately not everything they say is true or comes true)
During my first days in US I almost got killed by the slammed door at the store. One guy went in right front of me and I was expecting that he would hold the door for me. Yeah...
The most petty, forsaken, dirt-drunk ... Russian guy would hold a door for a girl. He knows the rules.

Americans are family guys. They value family, kids and etc. that makes up for it.
I don't want to talk about American women. "American woman stay away from me"Jimmy Hendrix said it ALL.*And classic never dies

I must say in many good ways Americans are not much different from Russians and it's not really hard to get used to new ways of living and new customs.because they are not THAT different. It's not that I went to live in Japan.

Posted by: Забава Микулична

Что я не приметила в Московском метро что б гайс дверь то придерживали. Старшее поколение мужчин лет так за сорок пятьдесят еще могли, но молодежь

Posted by: mila
