Hello,
You no longer need the letter of invitation for a visa to the Ukraine. I just came from there in July and stayed with my wife family all you need to do is apply for the visa and send them the funds they request. Just a FYI you do not need to register your visa once in the county any more either ( you used to reigister with the police once in the country) just make sure you have a copy of your visa / passport with you at all times the cover page that is in case you have any run ins with the police. Have a great trip and tell us all about it when you get back in the travel section of this website its always great to here what people like and dislike on the trip there.

Thanks for the updated information, Dave, and for your question, Pirate...

It's good to know that Ukraine is making it easier for Westerners to travel there. (It will bring more tourist dollars- and Euros- to Ukraine )

You still need an invitation for a tourist visa, but not for any other type of visa (for US citizens).

I was very worried, but the visa process itself was a breeze. All I needed for a private visa was my friend's name and address. The biggest hassle was the 2 1/2 hour waiting line at the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, DC. There were a number of couriers present and each was picking up or dropping off between ten and a dozen visas. One courier was in line for 30 minutes. There was only enough seating for maybe 8 people so you had to remember your place in line if you were seated. The big problem was driving to DC during rush hour and waiting in line. The visa process was simple and they can be ready in 3 or 9 days. I think the 3 day visa was a $20.00 processing fee plus $100.00 for a private dual entry visa and the 9 day private dual entry visa was a $10.00 processing fee plus $100.00 for the visa. Be prepared to pay by money order only. No cash, credit cards or checks. And you have to pay the processing and visa fees by separate money orders.
