If you are talking about beginning the K1 process, it is fairly easy and straightforward. The BCIS website explains it very well. Of course it takes 8 or 9 months to get her here. Good luck! You are very lucky in that you are in the Northeast so your paperwork goes to the Vermont Service Center. VSC processes K-1 petitions in a matter of weeks, unlike the other service centers which take 4-6 months just to approve the petition and send it on the National Visa Center for background checks. Add on to that wait for the background check and turnaround time at the embassy which is another 1-3 months.

Is there any faster way to do it? Also, is it true of a rumor I've heard that since 9/11, your fiance/wife can NOT work for at least 18 months, or leave the country for any reason??? I had met somebody on a bus who had his swedish fiance harrassed by airport security and demanded a very personal letter of hers translated(bringing the poor girl to tears). He was so fed up he had decided just to live there with her......

This rumor contradicts everything I have heard. I believe the 18 months you speak of refers to the change of status you apply for after marrying your fiancee. I understand you can apply for advance parole to leave the US and work while you wait for the change of status to go through. I also have heard that permission to work is sometimes granted when entering the US on the K-1 visa. You must not be hearing the whole story with this couple who had problems.
