Who will you support in the World Cup?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: zaniac

Oh-no, not another footy thread I hear you cry

Listening to the radio last night and it was interesting to hear that people from UK won't be supporting England in the World Cup. I thought I would pop the question on here for people who are from countries which are not playing in this year's World Cup finals could answer.

Which country will you support in the 2006 World Cup finals ?

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

I HATE Football/Soccer with a passionm fir various reasons but mainly because of the tribal violence that is inbolved in it. But I will answer that question anyway. So I would naturally support Australia, but if by some weird twist of fate we didn't get there it would be Greece because we flogged them last night in a friendly, and most of our team is either Greek, Italian or English anyway. Go figure huh, why do we call them the SOCCEROOS?

Hahaha! Oz, because Greek, Italian, English, Irish, Russian or whatever, deep down, they ALL want to call Australia home...

Posted by: Texas Proud

I am backing MY team all the way to the quarters... probably will not get much farther....

BUT, I was in the UK during Euro 2000... had all the locals telling me how great their team was 'this year'... they sucked... I think there is something wrong with the country team even though they have some of the better teams in England.. they just do not seem to play well together...

But, I will say Brazil will win it all...

Posted by: zaniac

Once England go out I usually opt for Cameroon, but I don't think they are in it this year, are they?

Posted by: Menehune

my pick is the jamaican bobsledding team.

Posted by: JamesB

Austrailia home.lol England is gods own country.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: zaniac

From the games I have seen, I would say the best match so far was:

Argentina 2 - 0 Ivory Coast

Lovely match to watch, but I felt sorry for the Ivorians.

Except it was 2-1! Drog-BAAAAAA!!!

As an Englishman I am under no illusions but there's nowt so far to scare us. The slightly crap performance against Paraquay will give us a kick in the arse and we won't play in the mid-day heat again.

T&T have had their moment, must be three points to england, leaving the Sweden game a formality.

The Germans look dodgy at the back, lets wait and see on the Brazilians.

COME ON ENGLAND!!

in the meantime we will settle for takeing lion scalps in the union & takeing back the ashs lol

Posted by: firemansam

I was reading int he papers today that Australia is aiming for a top ten finish. I think that's a fair goal to aim for considering how long it has been since we were last on the park

Posted by: JamesB

Typical Bob brings me back to earth.lol
Well i still Reckon we can win the world cup as wanderer said so far nobody has looked great.Brazil have great forwards and backs but no midfield.
Have you noticed how many of those japanese players look western? its a bit like the all blacks mainly being from figi hehe. Come on Austrailia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

Well it wont be Japan, even when they cheat we still beat them. Ha ha. we have beat them before and we did it again last night. GOD WE ARE GOOD. Even if most of our team are Samoan, English, Greek, Italian etc, etc, etc.

I've been to cities that never close down, New York, Rio and Old London Town.
But no matter how far or how wide I roam, everyone still wants to call AUSTRALIA home.

I am, you are, we all wanna be AUSTRALIAN.

I'm gonna take up writing songs and sell them to big business, after I make my 1st Brazilian $ out of them, to use for tourism adds.

Then I have my poetry.

I loves a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains. Of rugged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains.

I loves her FAR horizons, her jewel blue seas, her many different peoples who help to make you and meeeees.

Rendition is over now folks, sorry.

Sunstroke is a terrible thing lol!!!!!!!!!!
Have to say that so far nobody looks outstanding.Even brazil who im watching now are not brilliant.
Liuda arrives in 18 hours and we will be in a pub watching england in 20 hours. What a culture shock for her.Lucky she likes football.Already got her a shirt.!

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

I hope Luida enjoys the game. Congratualtions mate for tuffing this whole thing out and still finding time to watch football and talk to the rest of us.

Posted by: JamesB

I think i need to thank you guys.I have spent most of the past 3 months at home when not working due to saving etc.
If i had not found the forum i would have struggled to get liuda over and it has been great entertainment too.
Fireman sams jokes, all the great posts and so far i only met one pxxxxk but i wont use names.
Liuda will be joining the forum tomorrow and leaves home in 1 hour to go to novosibirsk airport. She made me promise that we would go to russia for christmas because she had a feeling she would never return to berdsk.
I think she is very brave. It must be scary for a girl of 22 to take such a massive step.
She will be with me in16 hours.

Hey Oz did you watch the Brazil Game, they were not brilliant.I reckon this world cup is wide open and the new balls really make a difference with more long range shots.

Yes I did actually, well part of it anyway. The whole things seems to be ripe for a huge upset from relative unknowns. I mean who woulda though Trinidad and Tobago would kept Sweden to a nil all draw. Seriously, it just aint what it used to be. ANd Australia beating Japan was ... well ... something that no-one really thought woulda happened as they are the Asia champs.

Plus the mob mentality that is being displayed on tv isn't good either. I am extremely proud of my country, as I am sure you are all aware and I hope you are all proud of your countries to, but this whole "I'm gonna be a mindless idiot because the football is on" really, and I mean really, annoys the lving daylights outa me.

James, if I am not on tonight, welcome your lovely lady to the RMP for me.

Posted by: JamesB

Do you think i will be online tonight? i dont think so! but thanks and liuda will join the forum pretty soon.
Looking forward to the next England game against Trinidad.I think maybe they had their moment and we will win maybe 2-0 i hope.

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

I mean tonight our time not your time. It sems as though I will be anyway, I am in a good mood as I just did a Uni exam and feel preety good about it. he he he.

I think England is over rated in this World cup, and No I am not trying to be smart. Look at the captain, he is getting old and yes he is still good but I think other teams that are up and coming may be able to topple the traditional Big Name teams.

Posted by: JamesB

Well i think England will finish in Last 4 but i would be just as happy to see a team like korea win to upset the big names.
I thought it was interesting that fifa are fining players for shirt pulling. It would be good if they find them for diving as well and gave the money to a good cause,as these players can well afford it.Good luck with the exams,i used to teach adults with learning difficulties and the studying used to drive me mad.

Well thats juuuuust typical!

We'll tell you how the world cup finishes up eh?
:P

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

I know it will be a long while before you read this James but thanks for the cheer mate . Studying is maddening but the end result will be worth it. Stupid thing is I can't spell, even by my own admission he he, although some of it is just lazyness too but I can rip a language apart to the finest detail. Go figure huh.

Now back to the world cup. Brazil didn't deserve that win, they are world champs but realy didn;t get into the game today all that much. I can't see England getting a top 4 either. The way I see it is Germany, being the host nation they will be there somewhere, and the South American teams. I would like to see, but realistically it won't happen, Australia, Greece, Italy, and Greenland (to show them I have NO hard feelings) oh and I can't forget Lebanon (but I don't even know if they are there anyway, did Syria let them go or even try to qualify?).

Or not, they were poor, lost 4-0.

Also German struggled to beat Poland, I don't agree with other about Germany here, they also look poor especially defensively. Brazil looked lack lustre but the big test is the second game.

As far England, we have an ace up our sleeve, Wayne Rooney. Wearing an England Shirt, he's the best player in the World, wearing the Red Shirt of Scumchester Urinals, he's a fat granny-shagger. I well remeber the gf chiding me after he scored for England once - 'Ohh, so he's not a fat granny-shagger now then?'

After the game later this afternoon I think we'll have a better idea of England chances, fingers crossing like mad here!

Hi Guys ,well just saw the England game and though they played poorly i think the trinidad side were brilliant.England have a habit of struggling against smaller sides.
With the likes of Germany and Brazil they know what to expect.I expect them to beat Sweden and progress.

have always wanated to see spain to win a title. It seems they finally peak in a tournement, so maybe this time.

Second favourite would be Italy.

Anyway, teams who MUST reach final 8 without having fiasko:
Spain, Italy, Germany Netherland, Brazil, Argentina.
I tend to put Portugal there as well.

From the Quaterfinals, its rather immpossible to predict.

PHP Code:
I post thisafter EnglandEcuadorGermany and Argentina is among the final 16.

Teams sofare who has surprised:
Postively: Trinidad and Ecuador, Saudi
Negatively: England, Serbia, Ukraine

Posted by: zaniac

I realised I had got that Argie vs Ivory Coast score wrong. I think my heart will be with Mexico, Ivory Coast, Poland or Portugal. Probably one of the latter 2 as I have friends in these countries

Not convinced how far England will progress now, but with Sweden Sven should consider giving Carrick and Walcott a full game. I believe Lennon is still our little suprise package and that we should keep him now, for the knockouts.

Also if Brazil get knocked out in the early rounds, then I think it could leave the competition open for a number of teams.

Australia has my support in the game against Croatia.

The last couples of WC, australia has forced to play versus S.amkerica 5. Fortunately with succes last time. But next time the winner of Ocenia section go to the Asian finals. So I think we will see more of Australia in WC in the future.

I thought all the hoo haa over here this time was because we hadn't been to the world cup in 30 years. I may be wrong.

Posted by: zaniac

I'm guessing Italy has won today. The streets in Bedford were stormed by the many local Italians living in the town today.

Posted by: Volga Trader

During the Hundred Years War, the Scots were allied with the French; naturally they support whoever plays against England. The Welsh longbowmen delivered victory to the English whenever conditions allowed (Homildon Hill, Poitiers, Crecy, Agincourt). However we were not paid as promised after Agincourt so we wait for the English to reach the quarter finals before switching on the tv. But if it's against Argentina the streets show blue and white around here.

Posted by: Jutman

and Australia did reach the final 16.

Personally I have hoped to see USA there as well. But okay, it was a difficult group and I like the succes of Ghana as well.
They are former Y-17 world champs (if I remember correctly [maybe just in the final]).

For the development of football (soccer) its important most of the continents are representated in the finals. And even better, sometimes some new countries. This year, Ghana and Australia and tomorrow we will know if its Tunesia or Ukraine as well (sorry saudi's I don't believe in youre chance).

However is rather difficult to imagine any major surprise in the 1/8 finals. England, Argentina, Italy seems to been in the quaterfinals.
Germany should pull it off, even its against Sweden. Rigth now the most intersing game would be Portugal-Holland, BUT perhaps a France-spain is waiting.

But at having said that, the US are the babies in the world of international soccer and as such, you must be congratulated in having qualified for the world cup in the first place!!

Now, about you supporting the Aussies....

Posted by: Jutman

hej

No USA don't suck in soccer. In spite of the FIFA (world body) ranking as 4th best in the world, USA lack the last few % to claim the position.

Soccer is still under development in many countries, including USA and Australia. In USA case, its the moneymen who hold the development down, where they are interested in profit instead of development AND then later make more money. I am thinking of the small salary gap, there is negotiated. A higher gap, would attrack better players from overseas, leading to more fans, better games and development of level in MLS.

So the prediction in 1998 where the coach said, that the goal for US soccer is the trophy in in 20 years and perhaps as soon as 2012, I not see. I am sure in all cups we will see USA and sometimes reach the play final 16 or final 8 (just like last time). Beyond 20 years its a maybe.

The reality of soccer, is that there is 8-10 countries in the world with the level A+, and then there is so many countries with the level A or B+ (more than 50) and its many times pure luck, chance and so on who is in the game and who is out.
The best example now Greece, European Champs in 2004 but not able to qualify to the WC. what is that !! In 2004, the BEST team in Europe and 2 years later, not among the best 13 ??? Or from the current cup, now we start the single elimination.

So cheers up, from a Denmark ( a country, there SHOULD be there i the cup)

Still under development, nah ah. We used to have a huge soccer following in Aus. Everytown had a soccer team, I grew up playing soccer at school because it was so popular with the European Australians. The problem with Soccer in Aus for so long has been its tribal/mob rule apearance. We still get the Croatians and Serbians trying to kill each other at/before/during/after games. In the 50s/60s it used to be the Protestants and Catholics trying to kill each other at the soccer. Australian soccer lost out because it gained the reputation of not being a family event, while Rugby League, Rugby Union, our own Aussie Rules (loosely based on Gaelic football), and Cricket were seen up until recently as games you could take the family to even if there was a bit of biffo on field at least that was were it was not in the crowd or on the streets.

Soccer had an image problem in this country not a development problem, we developed a few players for European, specifically English, football.

Posted by: bobjf

oz is right there is heaps of soccer played in oz & probably many realy good players but there is that image problem.
you wouldn't take your family to game because of the ratbag element.
some sides & there fan base here seem to be more interested in fighting eachother than playing football, getting like you see in england with there footy thugs.
it is the only sport here that you get that sought of thing except for the fan base of 1 league side here but they want to blue just because your not of there culture so any particular reason will set them off
our league gov/body now places the behaviour of a clubs fan base on the particular club & will fine the club if they don't weed out the trouble makers
if your caught being a drongo you can attract a ground ban ,lifetime ban, large fine or both

Oz & Bob

It is not just Aus where there is an image problem, it is the same here, fortunately it is a lot better now than it was a few years ago, if it wasn't so huge here and the other sports so small in comparison it wouldn;t have stood a chance.

Thankfully the football institutions and the authorities have realised at long last, the penny has finally dropped that they needed to do something about it. Not just here but all over Europe, just look at the World Cup now and how well it is being organised, very little trouble at all, because they have taken the passports away from most of the English trouble makers at least, to stop them travelling.

Having said all that, it is about time they tackled the players now, some of their antics on the pitch would not be tolerated on the streets. They would be arrested!! The players need to lead by example, but don't get me started on these overpaid prima donnas!!!

Cheb's World Cup Plan:

1. Learn words to "Waltzing Matilda".
2. Drop the "Y'all" from the end of "OZZY, OZZY, OZZY, OI, OI, OI"
3. Throw another shrimp on the barbee and start cheering for Australia.

Go kick their a$$es y'all!

Posted by: zaniac

Although I'm not a betting man, at the start of the tournament I had tipped Mexico to reach the quarter finals - at least! Shame it didn't happen but they did very well against the Argies. Now I can understand why Sam Allardyce does not play Jorg Borghett much at Bolton Wanderers.

The Mexicans played well when they made their passes along the ground, but I felt that their high long ball passes were not effective and these let the Mexican team down, in the final third of the pitch.

All-in-all a good match and a lovely, but cruel goal by Maxi Rodriguez.

Cheb, we have many songs for our sports. One that was popular for the Cricket many years ago, and still is, was "Come On Aussie come on come on". it used to drive the Barmy army (read English) mad when we sung that and did the mexican wave. The you have "up there Kazaylee" (really don't know how to spell that last word) for the AFL, and the ever popular "COME ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN" for the Tennis.

You just wanna be an Aussie, go on admit it, it can just be between you and me, I wont tell on you. HONEST.

to true chris never saw so many oscar hopefulls,i reckon every game should be reviewed & players deemed to have milked a penalty should cop a big bicky fine & unruley fans should cop a life time ban from all sporting events.
then you might get family groups going back & injoying sports

Oz

Soccer in Australia can be bigger. I knew mainly about aussie soccer, that the international team is doing fine and there is several good players in England. Thats the problem. IF soccer were well known, I would have heard about clubs and players playing there.
Your answer made we look at the net and found the a-league. ( 8 teams where one is in N.Z. !??) and at the official homepage there is uofficiel attendance staitistic. What is that? You don't knew if you sold the ticket or what. But I also found that the attandance has tripled since 2002. amazing and would guess that the WC succes would push that higher up. So sorry, there is room for development, well aware that there is pro soccer downunder and I am sure some competent people will do that.

About the current WC, has there been very few surprises. Less than normal. However I also has the impression among soccer fans, (my students, friends, at boards) that after the last WC, people want to see, the 'good old' teams back in the lead.
From the play, it seems a re 2002 final between Brazil and Germany. However I tend more to a Italian victory over Brazil.
In semi: italy beats germany and Brazil finish Netherlands. In the teams ending in the quater: Argentina (vs ger), England (vs NL), Switzerland (vs Ita) and Spain (vs Brz).
However the games in the 1/8 finals Spain-France and Portugal-NL can easily go both ways. And considering this is RMP we cant' forget Ukraine got succes and has a realistic chance versus Switzerland, but I think the swiss will advance.
But if Portugal take NL, it will send England to the semi vs Germany and the trophy stays in Berlin. The other 50/50 will not change the outcome. thats my prediction.

The players should have a massive fine, large fines to you and I mean nothing to them they earn too much, but tag on a long ban too and they may start to take notice. They should also be banned for man handling referees and plenty of other things they get away with.

You don;'t get any of this mob culture and loutish behaviour in Rugby, they have respect for officials and the game in general. Of course you are also dealing usually with a better quality of person too! certainly here in the UK anyway.

I totally agree. Union is still seen as a gentlemans game even though it is now classified as professional (has been for 20 years anyway) it still has humble origins and Union players don't forget that.

Players that muck up in any game should be band for life. I don't care if it is Soccer, League, Union, Ping Pong are whatever if you bring the game into disrepute more tha once then you are out for good. Maybe then people like Shane Warne, Ian Botham etc would never have had more than 1 season in International cricket. Fans that turn what is a game into a war should be gaoled, there is no excuse for rioting over a game. Games are meant to be fun and entertaining, and yes I am enjoying soe of the soccer this time round, but the idiots today that had the riot police to them are just thugs and I wouldn;t take my family to a game that does not do something about them.

Don't label a small group of fans for all. But yes, there stupid people in all countries regards soccer, who rather want to destroy and figth rather then see some sport.
In Sweden they have changed it. Soccer drow few people (men) to a league game, but somehow they turn it around, so now they have doubled the attendance in few years, mainly by families who come to the game. I just don't know how they do it, in marketing and so on.

Rugby is a special sport, a lot of countries play it around the world, but only few good countries.

Here in Denmark I actually think aussie football is bigger than rugby (but still a 100% amateure sport). The Danish league have teams from Sweden in it !!! Its broadcasted at pay channels (the reel stuff from Australia) and its a amazing sport.
When I was a teen I hated americans, canadiens and australians for using the FOOTBALL about their sport, but I have to admit I find the games very interesting. Normally its only NFL I can watch live, and they have so much succes that in the previos season started to show 2 games in a row.

We were saying football players should lead by example:-

Portugal 1 v 0 Holland

Players sent off 4 (2 from each side)
Players given Yellow card 16

a new World Cup record for all the wrong reasons!!

The good news is that Portugal now play England in the quarters with half their players missing

yer a very spitefull game.
they deserve more than red cards for there behaviour.
our league organisation here has started penaliseing players & clubs for there players & fan base for bringing the game in to disrepute (about time) there have been some unsavory incidents over the last few years
1 player recently had his licence to play stripped & marked never to play again.
he punched a femail fan & broke her nose ,very brave of him not
thugs fighting at the cup certainly don't help the image of the game either.
can only hope that the fools are caught & delt with harshly.

Italy did underestimate, but the game was a perfect example of italian tactic. That it was the last seconds before it paid off was perhaps not according to idea.
They are in the 1/4 finals, well rested after a 90% game where Ukraine was in penalty kick off.

I still believe in Italy.

i beleive italy only underestimated australia ,the same as other teams we played, there so called tactic was blatant cheating & a perfeect example of the acting farce the cup seems to be about
i have never seen so much bad sportsmanship or shonky refs as in this so called sport
in a shoot out which should of happened, the result maywell have gone the other way
italy didn't win the game, the ref won it for them
oz team can hold there head up but italy & any other teams who choose to
win this way should be ashamed, its not sport, sport is for athlets not actors & drama queens

thats part of the game too. We (the danes ) say the same. In a game we were cheated, and would have been in the WC.

But yes, Australia did well and have to long for 2008 in Southafrica with optimism. I am just happy that I am not going down there, way to dangerous and find it rather problematic that there are host for the WC.

Jutman, How is South Africa dangerous? All you have to worry about is who you are sleeping with.

Andrei, with the utmost respect we call it Soccer, we do have another name for it but I dare say the rest of the RMP would get slightly upset by it.

Safety.

I have yet, to encounter people who has been down there, where it was not an issue.

Of course I am aware where most tourists will be, it will be relative safe. Maybe just some thiefs. But some will end up in bad areas and will do it with their life at risk.
