New Years in Ukraine?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi everyone... I am planning a trip to Ukraine over the Christmas & New Year holiday. My fiancee and I want to do something special for New Years. She lives in Dnepropetrovsk but we thought about going to Kiev, Odessa or Yalta for New Years. Any sugestions on what is the best place? I have been to Kiev & Yalta already but not over New Years. I am sure it is freezing everywhere but we'd like to find someplace romantic and fun.

We are open to anything even cities that I did not list.

Thanks!
Nobby

Hello,
I have been to Yalta and Odessa. Both places are very pretty and like you said im sure very cold in the winter. My wife will of course say that Odessa is the place to go since that is her home town ...Yalta seems to have a lot of things for the tourist more then Odessa but to tell you the truth I dont know if that is correct.. I spent a lot of time with family there so did not get out that much. Take a look at some of my pictures on this site and you will see both Yalta and Odessa in them. If I can help you with any questions about these two places let me know. I do know of a great hotel in Yalta that we stayed at but it was a little on the expensive side ... you do have your own balcony and its a little Romantic and great service.

Dave, can you give me an idea what kind of weather to expect in Kyev in 2 weeks? My friend says to bring a warm jacket and sweater. But of course she is used to freezing sub zero weather. Here in Maryland when it gets to around 12 degrees fahrenheit people begin to hibernate.

As a thought, have you contemplated Lugansk?? An amazing city on the far-east side of Ukraine. I will be there visiting friends for Ukrainian "old new year" on January 13th. Although the city is a pain in the proverbial to get to, I would recommend spending time there to anyone.

Nobby, might even see you there

Well I changed my plans. I am now going to Dnepropetrovsk from Nov 26 to Dec 8. Bought my tickets a couple days ago so I am ready to go. I'll just spend the time with Sveta in her city. If anyone is there at that time we'd love to get together with you.

Dave - I looked at your pictures and thanks! Maybe I'll get to Odessa someday. As for Yalta I did spend 2 weeks there back in May & June and had a great time and it is so beautiful.

Si - I went to Lugansk 10 years ago and I really enjoyed it. Back then it really was quite different then Ukraine today. 10 years ago it was a heavy indistrial city with not much to do. I enjoyed all the people I met tremendously. The people were the best thing about that trip and it was a trip I will never forgot. Dnepropetrovsk is very similar so I'd rather stay there then to go back to Lugansk.

Looks like I might be in Belarus for New Years if I'm lucky. If not at least I sould be there by their Christmas on the 7th!! I can't wait to meet Nadya for real. The wait has seemd like forever already!!

Hi Kevin, I know the feeling my friend. When you are walking from the airport into the arms of Nadya, it will be a moment you'll never forget, and I know you will have an amazing time. Ukrainian hospitality is quite amazing, and I felt very humble when I was out there, for both trips. Belarussian hospitality and people will be just the same I imagine.

I've been to Ukraine a number of times. I recently got married there in Sept. I've been there during Dec and Jan. There will be no heatwaves there at that time.LOL.. I would reccomend going to Kiev for a few days to kill some time. It's just too cold to walk around and enjoy the sites of her lovely city. Find yourself and her a nice sauna and indoor pool. Goodluck with everything. If I can answer any questions feel free to ask.

Congrats, Greg in GA for getting married in Kyiv.
I was thinking on getting married there, but I have been told it takes longer to get a Visa for your spouse to come to the states.

Cold weather is common here in Wisconsin. I will be in Kyiv Dec. 27 - Jan 4, 2004. Providing the Urkaine Embassy in Chicago sends me my Visa on time. Still waitng... Should it take more than 2 weeks to get my Visa?

What kind of celebration happens in Kyiv for the New Year? (fireworks, parade, etc)

Posted by: Greg in Ga

I was there last year at New Years and it's about the same as here with the firworks and all. I hope that all goes well for you. What city is your soon to be wife from? My wife is from Kharkov. Do you already have an apartment in Kiev? If you dont then i know a nice lady with one in the very center of Kiev. How many times have you been there? I always learn something new with each trip I take.

This will be my first time there.
She is from Berdyansk a resort town by Azov Sea, she has relatives in Kyiv.
I am looking for an apartment with balcony and cozy. I have searched the net, prices and looks vary considerably.

Any awesome places you recommend while there?

greg1262001@yahoo.com. I can hook you up with an apartment for about $45-$50 a night in the very center of the city. You'll have a balcony overlooking the main street and a few steps from their underground mall. Being from Wisconsin then you know there wont be a heat wave there. I also know a very good guide there that can pick you up at the airport and help you translate if you need it. There are sveral must go places to eat also. Email me and I'll give you my telephone number and I'll save you some money. I leave for Warsaw on Dec 1st so I'll be around most evenings getting ready.

Hi all,

I am not visiting Ukraine for the traditional celebrations of December 31st/January 1st, but I will be celebrating old/new year during a 2 week break from January 9th, which should be great. I have been told that I can rent an apartment for $30 for one MONTH!! Amazing how prices differ when one knows friends in Ukraine who can arrange things at UKRAINIAN prices!

I hope your trip to Ukraine will be good for you Nobby, as I am sure mine will also

Si -- just make sure the landlord doesn't get wind that there is a Westerner renting the place. You'll be shocked how quickly the price will change!

Hi Conner,

VERY true, so I will be leaving all of the dealings to my friends Anya and Roma, and keep my head down while there, lol.

Hi Si,

Hope you enjoy your trip over there. I was in Lugansk about 10 years ago. What memories!

I changed my plans and went to Dnepropetrovsk earlier then New Years. I just came back the other day spending two wonderful weeks with Sveta. We did go down to Yalta for a few days and it was nice even in the winter. Got a very nice flat near the Oreanda Hotel for $21 a night. Had a large queen size bed in a seperate bedroom, living room, huge bath and even a kitchen with a washer in it. It even had a nice patio area but too cold for us to use it this time.

The rest of the trip was spent in Dnepropetrovsk. Stayed at her house and after I left I realized that the last 3 days we never even left the house. We cooked almost every night and only ate out maybe 3 times in the 2 weeks I was there and those were all in Yalta.

The only problem with this trip was it was too short.... Now we're just waiting on the K-1 to get past the California Service Center. Ours is dated Aug 7 and they are working in Jun 10 now... soon I hope....

Si, enjoy your trip! do you have room in your bag for me?

Nobby
