The following question is mainly aimed for people in UK, but for people who are thinking about why I did you not post this in the UK/Ireland forum? My reason is simply because this has nothing to do with russia.

Do anyone know how many points I will get for going just under 40mph in a 30mph zone? I was a little careless today on my way home from work and think I may have been zapped by a police camera attached to a bike. It was in a village and I entered it at 30mph and as I was turning off I saw a guy with a big camera. I looked down and was suprised to see I was doing 40mph or near to it. So I'm expecting a fine and probably points also. Just wondered if anyone knew what I can expect to find in the letter which is probably being printed out as I type this?

Hi Zaniac......long time no hear from you....it should be 3 points and a fine you naughty boy!!! ......, a couple of years ago they changed the speed limit on a road near me from 40mph down to 30mph, it had been 40 for more than 15 years, anyway, I was doing 32mph and they did me!! and I seem to remember the fine was around Ј60.00 so another easy Ј60 quid and disgruntled punter for the chancellor.

Posted by: zaniac

Depressing thought 3 points. I've never had points, but I hear points can increase your insurance costs. That's a bummer as I've got to renew mine on the 29th of this month. Maybe I should quickly accept churchills Ј334.00 offer I received this morning?

Posted by: AkMike

It'd be about 3 points here too. With a $150US fine to me because I have a Commercial License.
Here there are drivers schools that you can take to eliminate 2 points. It's an 8 hour class to 'refresh your driving abilities" .

Posted by: Chrismc

I don't think 3 points will put it up, 6 or 9 might do, but to be safe get a new policy agreed now, then you can honestly state you have no points on your licence.

But don't fret about it, even my Dad who is 73 and has been driving for over 50 years without an unblemished history, no accidents or a driving offences got caught by a camera dressed as a tree recently, he was mortified at first, but now he just admits, he doesn't know hardly anyone that has no speeding fines since the cameras startted popping up like mushrooms everywhere.

Posted by: Chrismc

Just remembered Zan....sometimes they now offer you a choice of going on some course or accepting the fine etc, but I think it is only if you are around 3-4mph over the limit. As you were at warp speed 3, I doubt you would qualify he he

Chris Tell your Dad that trees can be cut down...

Posted by: zaniac

Yeah my mum went on one of those for breaching a 30mph limit by 3 miles. She had to attend one of those and was asked why she broke the speed limit

Probably everyone caught says this, but I hardly ever speed around in England. The only real time I went speeding was driving 90mph from Newcastle down to Northampton.

Those unmanned cameras were declared illeagle here because whe cannot confront our accuser in court. And it didn't allow the driver to get the ticket. Just the registered owner... But only in AK. other states allow them.
Someone came up with a optical plastic cover that allowed human eyes to see the plate but screwed up the camera seeing them.

Yes someone here is selling a clear spray on the internet, you spray your reg plate with it and it is supposed to make it invisible to a camera. But they will find a way of making it illegal as soon as they can no doubt.

We have thousands of those unmanned cameras now in the UK, they are known now as Cash Machines because they generate so much money for the Gov.

Posted by: AkMike

That's one way to keep taxes down a bit..

Posted by: zaniac

I'm only in favour of stand alone cameras. as long as they are clearly visible to the driver and put in sensible places then that is fine. I personally prefer the ones which average out your speed over a specific distance. Actually I had passed through 3 of these relatively slowly, just before I came up to the area where this mobile camera was situated. Oh well time will tell!

hi guys
we had all the number plate hiders a few years back but if you get caught now with 1 look out.
do you guys cop double demerit points there on holiday weekends.
we get them here in nsw not sure about the other states
we get 12 points,so if you & 1 passenger arn,t wearing your seatbelts you can kiss your licence goodby on a hol/weekend. normaly a 3 point offence each but driver cops the points both get fined
get caught speeding by more than 40k,s over the limit, licence gone on the spot & a loan needed to pay the fine, dispute & go to court could also get you a holiday lol
applies to every kind of driveing offence.
we have warning signs for our cameras but plenty still get done over .

Posted by: AkMike

We don't get special treatment on holidays. 12 points in 1 and I think 16 in 1.5 years and the license is gone.
I'm not sure if we get points for the seatbelt law..A hefty fine for sure.
IMO the seatbelt law is illegal. It should be up to the driver if he chooses to wear it. Passengers yes.. But optional for drivers. Motorcycles aren't required to.
Commercial trucks aren't built a strong as a Suburu for rollovers ect. I've seen to many wearing belts and die because they are wearing them. I dummy up my `belts to look like I've got them on.

bit tuffer here from memory i think we only get 12 in 2 years & then you get an automatic suspension
ohh by the way if you don,t pay your fines they cancel your cars rego & you can,t get either back until you pay
state debt charges interest aswell & they have the power to seize goods to the value of

Revenge!!

Quote:
QC received a very amusing although naughty e-mail from a spy at the Department of Transport this week. Our mate informs us that four youths from Canberra recently pulled off a trick of breathtaking bravado to gain revenge on a mobile speed-camera van operating in the area. Three of the group approached the van and distracted the operator's attention by asking a series of questions about how the equipment worked and how many cars the operator would catch in a day. Meanwhile, the fourth musketeer sneaked to the front of the van and unscrewed its number plate. "After bidding the van operator goodbye, the friends returned home, fixed the number plate to the car and drove through the camera's radar at high speed - 17 times," our transport spy writes. "As a result, the automated billing system issued 17 speeding tickets to itself. Go Aussies!"

This unofficial addition to a road sign was spotted in the Lincolnshire village of Belton in the UK, where the locals obviously felt the police were not quite getting their priorities right.

Posted by: AkMike

That's a good one Chris. I've been tempted before to make a sign stating that there is hidden radar ahead, then circle back to warm other drivers. I think I'd belegal doing it too. 'Freedom of speach"

if ya got caught here you would be in deep do do.

not the first time aussies have pulled a fast 1 on radar guys here lol.
we often see fixed cameras with there lenses painted over or a box over them, they put them up on poles supposedly for protection hehehe
had a mate a few years back who worked as a roveing verhical inspector (safety inspector who can defect a car) cops pulled him over, said they suspected his car was unroadworthy lol idiots
phil said is that right, when was the last time your police car was checked
nasty cop proceded to give him a bad time ,mate said nothing & let them finish.
they finaly admitted they couldn,t find anything wrong, mate showed them his credentials & told them it was now there turn lol
police car got a defect notice (mate claimed it was genuine to)
in oz there 2 different depts & rivals, coppers didn,t appreciate it but had a hard time getting sticker removed ohh by the way it is an offence to remove 1 yourself, only rta (roads & traffic authority)can remove sticker

good to see a bit of revenge lol

Well so far so good. I have not had anything yet, but I guess after I post this the speeding fine will arrive first thing tomorrow morning.

Posted by: JamesB

Im afraid mate it will be 3 points and a fine.If you want to send me your email i have a link that may help.

Posted by: JamesB

Though you may be lucky.Did it flash once or twice. If once the camera was not loaded, and your in the clear.Good luck

Posted by: zaniac

I didn't see any flashes, but saying that I did not look at it for much of the time I saw it in front of me. The guy I think possibly turned it as I went pass, so whether he missed me or just wanted to get a second reading I don't really know. I've pm'd you

Posted by: JamesB

Hope you got the mail i sent you. There are many rules re hand speed guns and thery are the easies to contest as there are many rules around them.Example if contested the police have top prove it was calibrated that day.Have a look at the info i sent.

Posted by: zaniac

Hi JamesB.

Sorry mate can you send the links again. I think I either didn't get the email, or i accidently deleted it. Sorry to be a pain

Posted by: zaniac

I had heard something about the calibrated idea before. A colleague did something like this and I think the fine, etc was dropped.

Posted by: zaniac

I think I've evaded punishment by now, would you agree? I have not had anything come though by post from them since the incident took place.

Also managed to sort out the car insurance before anything arrives through the post - phew!
