How many Russians in Ohio

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Masha19

Hello to everybody! =)

If somebody remembers me fom my previous thread devoted to the question why Russian women are so popular among Americans etc.

I want to ask you Does somebody know how many Russians live in Ohio or how many Russians visit this place for rest/business etc. If anyone know, please, share with me your knowledge about this question.

I understood that this forum devoted to all Russian things but at least I am Russian. =)))

Faithfully, Masha.

It's difficult to put hard numbers to these type of questions, as it's a target that's always moving, and depends on each person's definition of the question.

Put this thread may give you a starting point:

Coming to Ohio? Cincinnati has a pretty large number, especially in the Mason area, from all I can gather. I used to work with several but no longer have contact, also I have met some Bulgarians and Czech's. I currently work with the "former Yugoslavians" and I think they have contacts to other people from the FSU.

Thanks! =)
According to this list of population of Russians in the USA it's easy to answer on the question about the places where Russians don't live!

Masha.

I was fishing on the banks of the Missouri River in Nebraska one day last year and a Russian guy showed up and began fishing up the bank from me. He was wearing a Russian Army jacket. Very serious about his fishing!

Both Columbus and Cleveland have very, very large numbers of russians/ukrainains living in them. There are a number of russian stores in columbus. I believe the population of Russians/Ukrainains in Columbus is around 100,000

Thanks one more time to all! =)

Yes, the Russian population distribution in North America is indeed interesting.

Cleveland definitely has a lot. They have the second-largest amount of Belarusians, outside of New Jersey/New York.

San Francisco has quite an assortment of Russian people, from all over the country---not just Moscow people. Plus you've also got "Chinese" Russians, from Harbin. Additionally, there are Ukrainians, Jews, Armenians, and even a few Georgians.

Seattle is different---actually most of the Russians here are from Sakhalin/Kamchatka/other far east areas, in contrast to other cities in the US.

And, of all the L.A. russians I have met, everyone seems to be from Moscow
or St. Petersburg...at least the gentile ones. The Russian Jews in L.A., on the other hand, are from all over.

You will hear some Russian occasionally spoken in Fresno, by Armenians. But the Armenians are teaching their kids Armenian instead, so you will be hearing less of it. As for actual Russians, though, the population is next to nothing in the Fat City.

In most cities in the US and Canada, there are more Russians, as opposed to all other FSU nationalities. However, Chicago and Toronto have considerably more Ukrainians than Russians.

And Atlanta, well don't laugh, but they have one of the biggest--if not the biggest---Georgian population in the U.S.

Posted by: Masha19

Yes, it seems that I am going to Ohio =)
And I just wanted to know how many Russians I can meet there.

Thanks to all for your answers.
Masha.

Posted by: AkMike

Masha,
When I've traveled overseas as you are about to I wanted to meet the locals where I went. Seldom have I seen another American and have spoken to fewer of them.
I'm curious as to why?

Posted by: jpierce55

What part of Ohio?

Posted by: Masha19

AkMike,
all situation is easy.

As I understand there are not so many Russians in Ohio, and ecpesially in that towns I am interested in.

I am going to Ohio alone, I am going for a long period, it's not a travelling. I had opportunity to choose many places (but not all) in the USA according to my contract, from VA (where thousands of Russian students are on the hot beaches with Russian dancing at nigths) to Alyaska (where thousands of students too). Yes, I agree that it's not interesting to go somewhere where you can find Russian clubs, shops, etc. So I am going to somewhere in Ohio.

But my parents??? They feel morally very badly themselves knowing that I am going alone, so they will be okay reading all your posts about population of Russians in Ohio! =) Yes, I am not interested in communication with Russians there, my main purpose is to improve my English skills as much as possible chatting only with Americans! But my parents! They can't live quiet life! I don't know why but they are interested just in population of Russians in Ohio, they need numbers! Is seems that these numbers will make their life more easy=))))). I translate to them that Ohio is fully of Russians!!!!! =))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Masha.

Posted by: AkMike

Ok now I understand. I think you'll like the people in Ohio. I have some reletives there and I was thru there a couple of months ago with my wife Tanya. You'll like the hot summer days I think!

Posted by: Masha19

AkMike,
Not Alyaska, it's right to write Alaska, sorry! =)

Masha, You should see some of the spelling mistakes I make.. That is nothing to worry about. I knew what you meant!
But thank you.

Posted by: ConnerVT

Masha, your parents should not worry. You will meet Russians no matter where you go in the US. You can not judge how many people of a certain country are in an area by just looking at a number. You have to also know how many people are in this area, and how large the area is.

An example is New York City. Most people who are not from the area only think of it as Manhatten island. But NYC is really 5 large counties, all covering a large area of land. Once you leave the official borders, you still have a large number of people living nearby. So there is 250K people living in a city of 10+ million. But beyond the official city limits, there are still many more.

Now, I live in a small city in Vermont. The "City" of Burlington only has a population of 39,000 people. The link I gave earlier shows there are 1600 Russians who live in Burlington. But my wife and son would not have been counted, for we live in an even smaller "City" of South Burlington of about 16,000 people. But my wife, who works in a clothing store, usually meets a new person from Russia (or other former Soviet state) at least once each day.

One day, my family went to the nearby school to play. We were the only people there. Later a woman and her young son walked by. She also was from Russia, having moved to the US a few years before. The two women and the two boys all began speaking Russian, and the only American in the group was busy trying to understand what everyone was saying.

I will guess that you will find other Russians on your journey to the US.

Masha, don't worry if you didn't understand this. I rarely understand Austrailians either. I wish they would learn to speak English some day!

ROTFLMAO!!
At least I'm not the only one!

Posted by: Raspberry

AkMike, wasn't the original spelling of the 49th state "Aleyska" when Seward bought it??

Posted by: AkMike

I wasn't here then, I don't know!

(I've never seen it spelled like that though) The local natives called it Aleyeska which
means "The Great Land".

Sam, I translate facts to them in such way that they should understand that there is no need to worry about me. =) They should think firstly about themselves, their health because they are not young. As for me, I am fully independent!

AkMike, as I understand your spelling mistakes can be explained by very fast typing, for example. =) I supposed that name 'Alaska' should include 'y' in its spelling because in Russian you can hear 'ya' in pronounciation. (for example, my name 'Mariya' in foreign passport has 'y'). But I see that Pennsylvania, California and others have not 'y' in the end too, although I very very want to include 'y'! =)

Thanks to all.
Masha.

I was only teasing about what you tell your parents Masha, you are a big girl and I totally understand your reasoning.
Don't worry about the 'y' if you like it, use it!
If you want o know more about AkMike, watch a film called Fargo, true it's not where he lives but the climate is about the same... hahaha

Sam, thanks for 'big girl' =)))))))))))

Really, for example, North Carolina or South Carolina are okay, I mean as I hear these names I write them in such way. But in some names of states I want include several unnecessary letters.

Thanks for Fargo, may be someday. =), because by this moment I am not interested in AkMike and there is no need to know more about him!

Masha.
P.S. I can say a film that you can see to know more about me. =)

Sure Masha, tell me (us) this film. I am always intersted in a good film. Today I watched "Everything is Illuminated", that was pretty good, very funny and somewhat sad at the same time. Set in the Ukraine. What film is it that you are suggesting and how does it relate to you?
Sam.

Masha...if you want to use a 'Y' just go ahead and use it, our American friends can't spell anyway I do understand why you want to use it though, the words sound as if one should be there, but that is the English langauge for you, good luck with your trip to the US.

Chris

Okay, Sam! I will try! =)) But I am confident that you and your RMP friends here will find a lot of points to tease me!
Be honest, I don't watch TV during last 3 years in Moscow, there is no time for that, may be only news and Music Awards (Russian and not Russian).

Movies:
'Pretty Woman'
'The Notebook'
'The Pianist' with Adrien Broody ( I advise you to see this movie the first)
'War and Piece' (according to novel by Tolstoy)
and many others

It's my subjective opinion, so I don't promise that you will like something from that. =)

Masha.

P.S. Does somebody know where it's possible to download 'Pretty Woman' in English from the Net? My dream is to see it in English to understand all the beauty of this movie but I can't to find where it's possible to download it.

Posted by: AkMike

Masha, If and when you go to Ohio I will send you a copy of "Pretty Woman " in english to you! The vcr tape will not work in the machines iover there because of a different format. Heck I can't even see my wedding tape because of that!
ChrisMc is right also, It seems that few care about proper spelling or even proper pronouncing of the words. It's a shame.

Oh, there is no need to send anything to me! =) I can easy download it myself if I know the proper Internet link!

Thanks.

Ok, and in jest...
hahah Masha, War and Peace?
Is this a film that best describes you??
Of course I am only teasing....
I have seen these films though. They are good!
Why don't you wait till you get to Ohio and then buy your own copy of Pretty Woman? It would be better quality than off the internet.
Glad you have a good sense of humour Masha!

Yes, Sam, yes, War and Peace! Why not???? It's difficult to say this film describes me, no, it doesn't describe me. But it's good film and if I had opportunity I would like to live those times!!!! =))))))) And Pier Bezykhov (or Bezukhov)!!!!! He is okay in this novel! =)

I am glad that people in this forum know something about Tolstoy and it's important to have a good sense of humour nowadays! =)

What about Pretty Woman, I am not confident that I will have opportunity and free time in Ohio to see it because I am going to work there and at the end of my contract - to travel. And I don't know something concrete about that place where I will live (TV, etc).

Sam, what about your film????? =) Something like 'Shreck'? (I joke =))

Masha.

Shrek!
hahaha very good!!
Hmm describes me?? Not sure if there is such a film... Maybe a film that is a cross between Monty Python, Mr Mom and the helicopter scene from Apocalypse Now?
A favourite film might be easier, I really liked "Love Actually", it was pretty funny, and kinda mushy at times.... lol!

"Love Actually", it's nice! =)
I remembered 'A Lot Like Love' also. Although I don't believe in such romantic stories, but it's okay to watch!

Sorry, but what does 'mushy' mean? Emotional?? Yes?

=)

Fire plus Man plus Sam, it's too complicated!

=)

We have a nice population of Russian imigrants in Cincinnati Ohio. We also have a good Russian restaurant and an Orthodox Church. Ciao.
