Should you learn your partners Native language

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have heard many for's and against's about learning your partners Native language.
My personal opinion is yes and have been doing so for nearly 12 months now I would like to hear from others on RMP their thoughts and comments on this.

Posted by: searcher

Yes, I have also been learning Russian but sometime (when i'm very busy) I stop or slow down.

I am hoping to resume it again soon.

A little off topic but related... anyone know of sources for Russian song lyrics?

I have some Russian music I received from Andrei and I can understand some of it but it would be nice to have the printed lyrics, I think that would be very helpful in learning Russian.

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

I think you should as our partners are going to have to to live in our countries, I think it shows that you nderstand what they have to do and are willing to do it also. Not only that when you go out you can whisper sweet nothings to each other without anyone understanding a word of it.

I'm of the same opinion Oz plus I think the language is a great language

Yes. It would be invaluable to help you foster good relations with her family and friends. It will help when you visit her country. Also, speaking to her every day in her language will ease homesickness and constantly remind her of your commitment to her by doing things to please her.

Posted by: Chrismc

Yes I agree you should learn as much as you can....as it smooths the way, shopws you are willing and it is useful when going to the FSU but also once she is living with you, it will be good for her to listen to her own language again. Not only that but it is tiring speaking a foreign language all day long, and I am sure she will welcome the rest!!

Can I just ask guys, when you first started to learn Russian did you start by learning words and phrases or by learning how to read Cyrillic or a combination of both.

I started by learning phrases but a Russian course my daughter bought for me says learn to read first.

What is your experience?

Chris

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

I have some old Linguaphone records that I am digitizing and listening to, I also have Berlitz tapes that I am listening to. I haven't got time to read much plus my eyes need the rest from reading, so I am listening first and will do the reading later.

From what my lecturers at uni have said the theories relate to your learning style. If you are a visual learner then reading should be good for you but if you are an auditory learner then listening and mimicking is the way to go. IMHO I reckon a combo of both so I listen and through the explanation of the dialog on the records/tapes I visualise the situation and try to see the language and visualise the words associated with the concept. It is like having a whiteboard in your mind with the days lessons on it.

My two cents...
Even if you only try as much as you can..
I think that your efforts will be recognised and you will receive this effort back ten fold...
My thoughts only,
Sam.

When I first started Chris it was a combination of both but for me the Audio helped the most especially with me writing it down in my own language and way to say it and Nat helps me with the street slang so does her sister. I have only just reached an Intermediate level in speaking and am about to launch into the full on conversational level.
The hardest bit i have found is its very hard when answering questions in russian as you have to absorb whats said think of it in your mind then think of an answer can be very tiring for me anyway after I have been speaking in Russian for half an hour or so im actually buggered. They say that as you become more fluent this will pass though. Russian songs and movies also help when learning as you can pick up how the words and sentences are strung together
He!!He!! I still put my foot in it plenty though...................

www.accords.ru used to be a great site for that, but they are in the process of upgrading or something, so it has become fairly hard to navigate and still not complete (they used to just have lyrics, now they are adding mp3 downloads and are focusing more on that at the expense of lyrics).

http://amdm.ru/ is also not bad, but you will have trouble navigating if you don't know Russian.

http://pesenki.ru/ isn't bad

There was another site I came acorss once that had the Russian words, an English translation, and an audio of the song. I remember posting the link somewhere on RMP (I believe in a thread started by Leprechaun ), but can't seem to find it right now. The site had a very limited selection, though.

Speaking as a Welshman with some experience of Bilingual culture, not only should you learn Russian/Ukrainian, you should try to conduct at least part of your marriage (say life in the kitchen or conversations in the car and especially some classes of conversation with your children) through her language. Anything else is dominance. She may say she doesn't mind at first but it builds up over time. Most of my mother's relatives (welsh speaking) took the 1950's line and went monolingual in their marriages and regreted it thereafter.

Posted by: Jutman

Especially that situation with kids.

Try to image what she and the child(ren) can talk about if you understand nada.

I have attended evening class, some years ago but since had a not developped my skills. I hope soon, it will happen, because for me, it was more important to use time, so my wife could learn (another language). First she learned english, thats the only class available andshe already the basics. Now she live here in Denmark, she is learning Danish.
Which is not an easy language for foreigners, however she is doing it excellent.

I started learning words and phrases and yes I think it is beneficial to learn Russian for all the reasons mentioned. What is the best book, course, CD, or way to learn Russian? I've heard the best CD/self taught course is Rosetta Stone. Any comments on this software?

There is an even better one from Pimsular- basic, intermediate and advanced this is the one i used, all three courses are about 90 CD's 2 half hour lessons on each CD it teaches you the 2,500 main words that you need to start talking Russian and it is a very quick way of learning.

Posted by: searcher

I use Rosetta stone and Teach Yourself.

Rosetta Stone is very good for building vocabulary, I used it for a while and should resume using it again.

Teach Yourself is also a very good course. In fact I like the book for Teach Yourself better than any of the other books I have. I can read it and learn more from it. It also comes with 2 compact disc but I haven't used those yet as the book has been VERY helpful to me!!!!!

Constantly repeat repeat repeat till the basic's stick or try and associate some words with things like a cow in russian Kahrova (car rolling over- car over) and Easter (pass car) paskah remember these are ozzie interpretations.

Good advice...it's the only way I can get anything to sink in!
Just wondered if anyone had come across some decent crib sheets.
Or found certain words or phrases useful.....

G'day mate,
Markgm put together some notes in our Aussie forums, but you may find ir a little difficult to find. I'm sure he won't mind me listing it here for you, but they are his notes. I cannot take the credit for this post. I'm sure he won't mind me sharing these with you.
Sam.

Yah is (I)

Zharkah- Hot
Tolkah- Only

Invineetee Pahjalstah niet Zharkah Vada Tolkah Ochen Holodnah Vada Eta Ne Robotah.

You can now then go up and order the drinks.
Iznineetee dva Peeva Pahjalstah – Excuse me 2 beers please
Skulka Pahjalsta- How much please
They might reply Vwee Americanits $100.00 us Pahjalstah
!!Stoh!! Skulka Stoit Eta Ochen Doragah- !!!What!!! How much is the price this is very Expensive.

He!! He!! Geez I kill Myself this is where you need to get your girl to save you.

Skulka- How much
Skulka Stoit- How much is the price
Dva- 2
Eta- This/This is/That- Pronounce the E the same as E in Yet
Doragah- Expensive
I could then say: Da hutsealabah stonybut Vwayitz spaseebah mozhenbwitz Peeva eely Vinah Tak . Peeva Pahajalstah.
Yes I would like something to drink thankyou maybe beer or wine let me think. Beer please.
Mozhenbwitz- Maybee

Panyatna- is I see like when someone says something to you and you say ok I get the point I see.

Ravistah- Like as in I like it
Kiss- Pahtsalooee
Hutsealabah- would like
Stonybut- something pronounce the U as in put
Pahyeast- To eat
Vwaypitz- To drink
So if you wanted something to eat you could say:
Yah Hutsealabah Stonybut Pahyeast Pahjalstah- I would like something to eat please
Yah Hutsealabah Stonybut Vwaypitz Pahjalstah- I would like something to drink please.
You can also ask your girl by changing the Yah to Tee:
Tee Hutsealabah Stonybut Pahyeast- You would like something to eat
Tee Hutsealabah Stonybut Vwayoitz- You would like something to Drink
Stohva Hutsealee vwaypitz- What would you like to drink

Veenah- Wine
Vodka- Just say the same Vodka
Vwiskee- Whisky

So now if you wanted to you could start forming the following sentences like:
Mark Hutsealabah Stonybut Pah yeast (Mark would you like something to eat)
If I replied- Niet Spaseebah (no Thankyou) you could then ask Mark Hutsealabah Stonybut Vwaypitz (Mark would you like something to drink).

Izvineetee Yah Bohlyet (sorry i'm sick) wont save you but its worth a try
Or Izvineetee Yah Galav-nie-yah Bohl (sorry i have a headache)
Ne- Not
Ne harasho- not well, not allright, not good
Ne Ochen Harasho- Not very well, not very good
Yah- I
Tee- You… for friends and your girl
TeeBeeah- You…. for your girl more personal
Vwee- You…… to unknown people but you can get away with the others
So now you should be able to string some sentences together
Like………… Dec Kuck Dilla Sevodnay (Dec how are you today)
You could respond with …………….. Harasho……………Harasho spaseebah…………Ochen harasho…………..Ochen Harasho spaseebah
Yah ne Harasho- Im not well, im not good, im not allright
Yah ne Ochen Horasho- I am not very well, good, allright, ok
Tee Harasho- you ok, allright, well
Tee Ne Harasho- You not allright, not very well, not ok
Tee Ne Ochen Harasho- You not very well.
When addressing strangers replace the Tee with Vwee.
When you say the Yah Ne you need to join them together then it sounds like Yanyee and the same with with Tee Ne then sounds like Tennee but they will understand both.
Mozhnah- Another great word- is it allowed, will you, May I, is it possible, can I – The ZH is pronounced the same as s in measure.
Mozhnah Gavareet Mark- May I speak to Mark
Gavareet- Speak………Gavarish to friends……….or if referring to do you speak…Gavareetee………. Gavaroo refers to I speak ……. Yah Gavaroo I found if you mix them up they still understand.

Yah ne gavaroo pah Rooskie……...I don’t speak Russian
Yah ne gavaroo pah Rosskie ochen harasho…….I don’t speak Russian very well
Yah nimnogah gavaroo pah Rooski…….I only speak a little Russian

Yah nimnogah gavaroo pah Rooski noh Yah gavaroo pah Angliskee Ochen Harasho….I only speak a little Russian but I speak English very well

Tee gavareetee pah Angliskee……..Do you speak English
Vwee gavareetee pah Angliskee…...Do you speak English

Remember Dec this is Aussie conversion so say as it looks as an Aussie remember that A is pronounced as a in father or car.
You will find plenty of American to Russian Dic’s and English to Russian Dic’s but no Aussie to Russian ones. They understood me very well over there Dec.

Hello- Zdrastveetcher also common there is just Zdrast use these two with people you don’t know.

Hi or hello- Privyet use with friends and your girl you can also use in the street as well instead of Zdrastveetcher. Pronounce the i in Privyet as in sit.

How - Kak pronounce as Kuck same as in (muck)
How are you- Kuck Dillah
Today- Sevodnay.
So for your girl you can now say the following:
Privyet K….. Kuck Dillah Sevodnay (Hi K….. how are you today)
When addressing her Parents its polite to use the Zrastveetcher its a sign off respect for the elders.
Before I go any further tell me if this is gonna help Yah as we have only got a week and a bit before you head off and theres heaps to post up here for you if you want.

Harasho- great word this one almost sounds like horror-show Means good, well, ok, allright.

Ochen- pronounced almost like Awchen or Awshen- Very/ very much

Spaseebah- Thankyou

Bolshoy Spaseebah- Thankyou very much dont use Ochen though for thankyou very much

So if someone says would you like to go somewhere you can say Harasho
How are you – Harasho
How do you feel – Harasho
Would you like some sex- Da Harasho He!! He!! by the way Sex is Sex in Russian

Ochen Harasho- very well , very good

Ochen Harasho Spaseebah- Very well thankyou, Very good thankyou

Harasho spaseebah - good thankyou, allright thankyou, ok thankyou.

No wonder you do not understand it as it is converted for Australians and our accent not yours.
For an Australian to try and pronounce it the way you have just written does not work. It is Phonetic for Aussies not anyone else.

But the Tseluyu one is wrong in Australian it should be (Yah Tselooyoo Tee-bee-ah)

Take Care Mark

Posted by: firemansam

Oh Masha, I feel you are too hard on our Mark's efforts to help us!
Yes I see that you correct the words but marks words are more how they are said as opposed to how thay are spelt. Almost phonetically if you will. The way he suggests them is how they would be said by a western mouth... We can only try....
I am sure you will forgive us...
Sam.

Posted by: Masha19

(Yah Tselooyoo Tee-bee-ah) I kiss you....

Men, for what this expression? It's necessary to kiss and that's all. But don't talk unnecessary words that you kiss us. We will understand that you kiss us when you will do it! =)))

Masha.

I just recently married my wife in Russia. I feel it is a very important cultural aspect to learn your partners language. It shows you are willing and committed to her. After all we are asking our partner to learn ours. I have been learning and studying Russian to beeter understand my wife as well as be able to speak to her parents. My wife has a masters (Russian Masters degree) in English, very fluent, but she is very very appreciative of my efforts to learn her language and culture.

No, there is no need to create something for me, I just want to hear some more music, if it's possible.

Gentleman should create music for his special woman in a burst of joy to afford pleasure for her in such way. =)

Masha.

I agree full heartedly !
I have been slowly learning russian, and enjoy the language very much.

The new wife speaks great english. She still wants me to speak some russian, so I can speak to her family. And, I want to learn so I can speak to her in her own language.

I feel a lot better speakling to her in russian also. I feel that I can connect to her more closely. And with her teaching me is very special to me and for our relationship.

If you want Her to care more for You, then learn to speak Her language - She will respect You more.
