Sending a cellphone

I was wondering if any of you have ever mailed a cellphone (or other more valuable gifts) to your lady, in Russia and how was your experiences. What mailing service did you use and did everything get there unopened or damaged. Also did you make any customs declarations and have to pay any taxes.

Thanks

It is illegal to import any radio transmitting device into Russia without the proper permits.

All packages mailed/shipped out of the US require a Customs declaration form to be filled out.

Total package value of over $100 will require that the recipient pay a Customs duty (possible as high as 50% of the value the receiving Customs office decides the item(s) are worth, not what is declared or actual cost).

In many FSU locations, valuable items seem to "disappear" before they reach their destination.

With that said, I have many times successfully sent packages via USPS (small) and MEEST (larger, up to 40 lbs) to Russia without incident. None of the packages contained overly valuable items, and none had electronics more complex than a flashlight or cheap handheld video game.

I wouldn't send a cell phone. Just asking for trouble, and new and used telephones (that are compatible with Russian cellular providers) are available at the same prices we pay in the US.

I tried to send computers to an orphanage in Russia. Once was all it took to learn that lesson. I hope whoever took them is enjoying them. A thank you note from the Tambov crime family would have been nice.

Never, never, never send anything electronic to Russia. Send money and have them purchased over there.

Just a tip from your Uncle Steve!

Cheburashka, you are absolutely right!

Also mobile phones have some different settings for using at different countries.
I had big experience this.

Send a cell phone to Russia?
They have better phones there then we do, lol.
Just my opinion of course but their phones seem to be smaller and have more features than US phones.I like the pay by the card idea which they seem to use. They must have sim cards in Russia so sending a phone is not advisable because it probably wont work there unless it is sim card capable.Any US phone with sim card capability cost a lot of money.
