Hi Ho, Hi Ho, off to the FSU we go..

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: deccie

Well, after several months of planning and waiting April is here and I'm off.
I'm off to St Petersburg.

Here's how we got here so far..

About a year ago I decided to pursue the idea of looking for a partner from the FSU with active effort (i.e. spending money).
For the previous 6 months I had been just "looking around" and found sites like bride.ru and elenasmodels. I didn't know about the RMP or even RWguide back then.

What I didn't plan on was that I would find someone who would really interest me so quickly. This is the person I am going to see on this trip.

I do have very limited backup if things should not work out but given the history of St Petersburg I am quite happy to play the tourist. There will be no shortage of things to do and see.

So, in early August 2005 I saw this picture and profile on EM. There's no other way to say it than it grabbed my attention immediately. Although I kept looking I always found I was drawn back to reading this person's profile. So I decided to send a note to her to say Hi.

Lo and behold if I didn't get a reply and it was positive! I got that reply while I was working away from home. Indeed, I was staying in the very hotel I am in tonight. We've been talking ever since. IM chats, email and phone.

I work in IT at a heavy industrial site but I can say unequivocally that I hate using computers for relationship stuff. Were it not for the phone I doubt things would have lasted as they have.

Because I work as part of a small team and we are a 24/7/365 site this imposed some limitations on me as far as leave taking was concerned. So when I found out K's birthday was in May I decided this was when I would go see her. That the worst of the St Petersburg winter would be over was a bonus.

In retrospect I would have tried to go earlier knowing what I know now. But given my work and that I needed to save for this not unsubstantial cost April/May was probably realistic.

Over the time I was talking to this woman I was also talking to others. I had my share of scammer attempts. None successful I am happy to say. I also ended talking to a few other women when I felt things were not going in the direction I wanted and of course I had a few women stop corresponding with me. By Christmas 2005 K was the only one I was still talking to and I had not bothered to search for others.

So, tonight I sit in a hotel in Brisbane and am due to catch my plane out tomorrow. There's a bundle of emotions going on right now. Excitement mingled with the unknown of travelling to a non English speaking country for the first time. My flight tomorrow goes via Bangkok, Hong Kong and then to Helsinki. I stay in Helsinki for a day and then travel to St Petersburg on the 27th. So, the next post will be from Helsinki.

I decided on this path to be able to recover from jet lag and present myself to K in the best possible manner. it will also enable me to pick up some flowers to give to K at the airport - something I defintely cannot do from Australia. I'll be picking up K's birthday present tomorrow at the airport.

I'll disclose what the birthday present is at the end of the report!

Keep us posted. We wish you the best of luck.

Like everybody else has said...

GOOD LUCK!!!

Posted by: deccie

Thanks for all the good wishes guys.
I'm sitting in my hotel room in Helsinki at the moment.

Finland is a pretty amazing place on it's own and I shall have to come back here and see more.

The trip over was hell. It was just too long. I spent over 30 hours travelling.
Thank God I have the break here. For anyone who has their partner do the reverse trip out to Australia I personally would not get them to do it on their own.

Tomorrow is the big day. I need to call K a bit later tonight when she's due back from work to let her know all is ok and I'm here.

Hong Kong Air Port is incredible. To get the place in perspective, I got to try out the British Airways/Qantas lounge. It's on LEVEL 7! The place is huge. Certainly had the largest number of 747's in one place I have ever seen.

First impression is that the place is clean (airport certainly is) but if you look closer you can see a lot of pollution in the surrounding area. I saw an oil slick surrounding one ship as we flew in. I suspect I also saw a significant amount of sewage effluent too. I also got a vibe about the place due to (I think) it being a regulated society.

We also stopped at Bangkok but it was too late to see anything.

One thing I should have expected but didn't was that our flight path took us over Afghanistan. Too late and too high to see anything though.

The hotel I am staying at here is basic but that's fine. If it stays like this for the return trip I'll have no qualms using it again in the future.

Other than that, nothing major to report apart from I have picked up the sniffles from being cooped up in air conditioning with a lot of other people for hours and hours. I'm quite glad I got my flu needle a month ago.

Tomorrow Russia!

Posted by: mistermopar

deccie, once you are in Russia and with K you will forget all about the long travel,I hope.
Good luck tomorrow.

Randy

Gee Mark,
What an introduction for Nat - the good old Aussie BO!

I'm heading off to the airport in about an hour. Called K but she wasn't home yet and the mother does not speak English - but I understood what she was trying to say, and then it got too late and I needed sleep.

I've not been able to raise the guys picking me up at the airport either.

The sniffles are pretty much gone - I hope they stay that way.

Hi Guys,
Just to let you know I'm ok and in St Petersburg.

There is a lot happening. There is a lot of good and some bad too.

I've been given a lot of good advice from those around me.
K and I have met and have spent a lot of time together but I have a lot of thinking to do until I know where we are going..

Mark and Bob, things are a bit different to your own experiences.

I'm on time limited dialup here so I'll keep it brief.

Thanks again guys.
Talk soon.

Good Luck and keep us updated when you can!!!!

Good to see your OK DEC Pm if You need help

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

Deccie, you know how I feel so I hope things turn out for the best, whatever that may be. You also know you have friends here, as Mark has said, you can PM to bounce thoughts off.

Take care mate.

Hi Dec, hope the bad isn't too bad. (mercedies?)
Look after yourself mate,
Sam.

Posted by: deccie

Yeah Sam, you got some of it right.

Monetary expecations are an issue.

Posted by: firemansam

Hey Dec, well keep your wits about you, continue to be honest and up-front, (I know you will anyway.. ) and see how it all plays out.
Fingers are still crossed for you mate.
Sam

Hey Deccie,

Just caught this thread, I hope everything's ok mate.

I think it would be hard for an Aussie to impress a girl in one of the most expensive cities in the world..

Looking forward to hearing an update!

Dec unfortunately we all have to point out to FSU women that our streets are not paved with gold I'm sure you will work things out.

Posted by: yodaamnot

Let us know how you go.

Posted by: deccie

Thanks Guys.

There's something more at work here I just don't know what it is yet.
The phrase that comes to mind is "sense of entitlement".
But even that does not adequately describe what's happeneing.

This girl has managed to piss off most of the people I have here to help me.
If only I didn't like some of her quirks so much this would be a hell of a lot easier. Together we are really really good -sometimes.

I go for the eccentric type and this is defintely one of those!

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

Do do do do, Picture a man in the FSU with a drop dead gorgeous lady, who admitedly has some lovely quirks. Deccie you'll be OK I am sure of it, take it easy and glide through things.

dec for all of what we have said , only you know what you can live with & only you can decide whether to go forward.
just be yourself & be totaly honest about everything & see how it pans out.
i hope you can resolve your issues but also remember to look at the big picture too.

Homebrew Old or Stout done with Brown Sugar to up the caramel taste and the proof level to 12 pucent.

Posted by: leum

Eccentric is good, but overly materialistic is definately a big worry. We are none of us sugar daddies (I hope). Be careful, remember the big head is the important one.

Please keep us informed, this thread is excellent, not least for the suspense value!

Posted by: deccie

Hi Leum,
That's the thing. It's not materialism. It's the way she wants to be treated that's the problem.

Basically, to put it bluntly, I know there are problems.
What is to be decided is can I live with those problems or not. Are they deal breakers?

I just like this girl too much to think straight right now.

What I need to try to find out is what her agenda is..

Remember I said I'll know what to feel when I get to look in her eyes? Well I did, and I looked deep and I'll never forget how that felt..

Sounds like you are between a rock and a hard place Deccie, these women can make you melt when they look at you!! take a step back, take a breather and gather your thoughts together , decide what you really want, is it worth pursuing or is it just too much risk. Would you like to spend the rest of your life with this women??
But!! follow your head not your heart and good luck

Well said, and so true. It is easy to be blown away and be caught up in the moment of meeting a woman for the first time, one who is likely to be stunning, in a city such as St Peter. Think hard mate and don't risk further trouble by continuing when you have doubts.

My 2 roubles worth....

deccie,if you have to think about it,it may not be a good sign.If there are problems this soon, what will it be like later.
Sorry I had to say that.

Hi All,
No, thanks I appreciate all the comments and I don't disagree with any of them.

I know what the safe option is here... but I have this habit of not chosing the safe option.

Sometimes that pays dividends. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the most interesting people in my life have been someone I should never have been with and in the strictest sense of things should have walked away from.

Of one thing I am sure, green card seeker is a definte NO. (-:

The maddening thing is the chemistry when we are together. It actually works really, REALLY well.

Bob, Mark, this is going to sound strange.. but I have never been looking for the sort of relationships you have with your Nats. That has never been what I wanted.

Oh well, I am going to see her later today. I'll keep you all informed.
Thanks for the support.

You see, that's the paradox for me. I know this woman CAN make me happy. But I also know she could bring sadness too.

It's like drinking from a cup with one half being the sweetest wine in the world and the other half being poison and you don't know what your drinking until you taste.

This is the paradox for me and is probably one of the things that has those hooks in place.

In one of our discussions via email where we were talking about something - she did not beleive I was coming I told her something along the lines of
"You fascinate me, you intrigue me, you frustrate me".

All those things are as true today as they were then.

Posted by: bobjf

hi dec
wow mate you do have prob on your hands .
must come from seeing in grey lol.
whatever you decide you know we will all back you.
it,s your life my friend & for you to live as you see fit.
i certainly don,t see you as indecisive & think you know which way you want your future to run.
go with your instincts & have a great time regardless of what you decide.
spiderwire is not unbreakable should you need to bolt lol
cheers mate

ps maybe try laying it on the line & see what reaction you get,may help you decide

Posted by: yodaamnot

Hi Dec,

Don't envy your situation, perhaps maybe one day I might plagiarize your post. I think bob's suggestion regarding laying it on the line and watch her reaction might help. As they say 80% of communication is through body language.

Let us know what happens.

Be strong, the force is around you

This is women in general anyway for us guys, the only thing that varies between women is the intensity of each aspect.

Deccie you have our friendship and support regardless of the choices you make, I know over the time you and I have been on the RMP we have asked each other for opinions and advice and everyone posts here seeking and giving advice I wish you well, as I am sure everyone does, in your deliberations. Take it easy and enjoy your holiday and enjoy your time with the one of fascination, intrigue and frustration. In many ways I envy you.

Dec,maybe you are over thinking the situation, just go and have fun and see if things fall into place.

Posted by: deccie

You know Randy, your exactly right again. I have made my decision.
For this trip at least, she's the one.
I have no plans to contact any other women until this thing at least runs it's course.
That does _not_ mean I am walking down the isle any time soon.

Today was a great day and K did a very good job of budgeting.

This trip has been an absolute blast. I am so glad I came no matter the result here AND I've seen a little of how real russians live instead of the inside of a hotel. I've ridden micro buses on my own and gone shopping in the local shopping centre. I bought flowers from the local shop for her too.
I've even been in the Metro during rush hour. All amazing experiences.

All I can say to the other guys is:

Do your research

Plan your trip and COME!

Don't rush it - plan it.

The other comment I'd like to make is that this trip has made me see how right a lot of Jill's, Inlove and Tats posts are even though some of the guys here get upset at some of them. Ladies, this trip has given me even more respect for your posts.

I have three more days in Russia. I'm going to be sad to leave.

That's the attitude Dec.....whatever happens enjoy your time there as you will miss it when you are back home, we all do!!

thanks,

Agreed better attitude Deccie. You don't have to make a decision now and it would be crazy to make a serious decision imho. You should think about it, after you get away from her and at home. Let the hornymones cool down and see if you still like her.

Like PinBoy I also can't say more then that without knowing what issues but if you don't feel like posting them I respect that.

I think sometimes there may be a need to post some info but not go into detail about it, it is a very personal thing and even though we all ask for and give advice the need is still there for some privacy for all parties concerned. As much as everyone else I am itching to know the details of the trip but we must remember Deccie has to consider K's privacy as well.

Posted by: Pin Boy

oz,

thanks for the reply. i thought i may have missed something in this long thread.

Dec,nice to hear you are now having fun and enjoying your self.Let nature take its course and if it is ment to be it will happen.

Being sad when leaving is a good thing,(kind of),if you were happy to be leaving, that would not be good,(or would it)... LOL you know what I meen.

Have fun.

Yeah, I know PB.
But I do feel like it would be invading her privacy to post those details. I've confided in one member here who knows whats going on via pm.

I did a whole trip diary thing but I found I just could not hit the post button!

I did a whole trip diary thing but I found I just could not hit the post button!

Hey Dec make sure you keep enjoying yourself mate you will be arriving back and I will be leaving to go overthere soon

Dont feel obliged to do the trip report keep the personal stuff out of it and only post what you are comfortable with hence why mine stopped where it did.

You gotta read between the lines guys!! there is enough info there, without being too explanetary, but it is up to Deccie how much he wants to say, I know where he is coming from with what he has said already!!

Well, I'm still alive.
Though I got dropped off by my taxi in the wrong place - after he decided to ask for more money.

Imagine trying to find your way home on the streets of St Petersburg at
11.30 pm with a drunk following behind you 50 metres away.
This was me last night!

But we got there, thanks to some phone directions from a good friend. - Thanks Phil and thanks ConnerVT for putting me in touch with him.

Things between K and I are still complex.
What I will say are that going by the "strict" "rules of etiquette" for this game would probably end any relationship.

Hey Deccie, Glad to hear that you are still alive over there! I am very impressed by your ability to keep us up to date!!!!

Mate, I'm not always one to give advice and I do not want to come across as doing this now, just my thoughts....

Is she really the one to spend your life with? Yes happiness comes at some price, the question is can you emotionally afford it with this person for the rest of your life?

OK, enough downers,
Hope you are up mate!!
Want to see one of those left handed smiles soon dude!

i'm sorry that some problems have arisen in this meeting, but this is all too cryptic for me to be interested at this point in this thread. not trying to be callous, but just not getting anything of substance, which of course is dec's preroggative.

Pinboy...I believe it is quite plain what is going on! Those who have experienced it or have confidants with the same problem completely understand. At least he is composing to your satisfaction!

Deccie....I actually wrote a long reply which I think would help you understand but the websight ate it. :-( I was disgusted and did not have time to repost it...then you seemed OK. Feel free to PM me if you would like some more insight.

Well today I left Russia and am back in Helsinki.
I'm absolutely flogged.

Mark, K did the same sort of thing that you experienced and hid my passport when it came time to go and then eventually she gave it back.

When I left my suit cover at her place she said it was an omen I'm coming back. (-:

I finally realised what was going on between us. Everything we did together had passion, something I am not used to. The sparks _really_ did fly. She told me that when she leant against me as we would go down the escalator in the Metro she got a buzzing feeling in the pit of her stomach. (-:

Over time time I was there we fought like cats and dogs and then our good time was also incredibly passionate. The good time far outweighs the bad.
(like 90/10)

I have to say I want this girl...

In no way does it remove the problems we have, but I want her.

So, time for a second trip I think. Roll on August!

Good to hear Dec they are a breed of there own but you can not explain it to anyone that has not done it.
Dont worry Nat and myself had a few spits at each other in the first couple of weeks but they were resolved very quickly and were due to her not wanting to share me with anyone else but she soon got over that fear.
You will also find that they are very superstitious (dunno if thats how you spell it) One was i tried to buy her a watch which is a very bad omen something to do with the relationship would only last as long as the watch or something i still do not understand that one. Shoes were another, a man must not buy shoes for women something about walking away from a relationship cannot understand that one and the last one was pearls something to do with tears in a relationship.

Posted by: mistermopar

markgm,I was told by a girl from Russia that to give a watch as a gift would meen that the relationship would be short and not forever.
I guess alot of them believe this.
So guys if you want to get rid of a scammer..buy them a watch...LOL

Randy

I am glad for you Deccie! Even with the headaches and heart aches it beats the nothingness of being alone.
Now you'll have a chance for a breather and be able to realisticly sort it all out! Good Luck and Have a safe trip back home.

Posted by: metaforest

There are a lot of these little superstitions in Russian culture, and they are taken very seriously. Kind of seems like little anti-social land mines laid all over the place.

Little things like giving the wrong number of roses (odd numbers only guys!) or the wrong color. Or worse yet the wrong flower. I don't know very many AW who even know that different flowers mean different things, and that one can say some very nasty things with some very pretty flowers! FSUW, in general, know things like this.

Do your homework, and ask a lot of questions.

PB, it's not that we are the ones who understand "Australian", it's that we know the full story. If you read the ozzie forums more, you too would know the story. deccie has told those who are interested, everything. It's his story and if you are really interested in hearing it, you will now have to do a little homework...
If you are not interested, leave him alone.

Hiya Aussiekinda.. lol!
Mate, I have to disagree with some of that last one...
I think you are better off alone than in a relationship that is not nuturing and fulfilling... (for the long term that is)
The rest though, yes, agree totally.

Oh and Decc, I'm glad all went well in the end and that you are already planning trip number two!!
Excellent news my friend, excellent news!
Sam.

firemansam...i didn't bother deccie in any way. i merely inquired as to what was happening. i wish everyone well.

deccie,

of course it's your preroggative as to what to disclose. all i did was innocently ask. if more to your story is in another thread, i didn't see it.

is the approaching winter down under making you guys a little sensitive?

a sensitive aussie guy hmm i,m sure there are some but i have never come accross 1 lol
you can,t read the intro & then skip to the end & hope to follow the story, aussie yarns don,t tend to be like days of our lives but rather move on so if you arn,t doing your homework you won,t get the drift.
our winter is like your summer so can,t be that hehehe.

OOOPS!! i've done it now!
last february i met my Larisa for the first time in vladivostok, and...............i brought with me many gifts for her ,including a GOLD WATCH!! she thanked me for it, and put it away in her drawer, she never wore it!! she already had a watch from her dad. but she said it was a beautiful watch.
so how superstitous are they???
i planned my trip for 6 months, read everything about russian women including "how to marry a russian woman" by elena petrova.
there was nothing anywhere about a watch bringing bad luck! how was i supposed to know??
we are engaged and we write or talk everyday, so according to russian superstition regarding giving watches to women..............how long have we got together???

Hi Randy Nat said to me that i should never give her a watch as the time thats on the watch at the time it is given is how long the relationship will last. I can never buy her shoes, i can never buy her pearls as it means tears in the relationship, flowers that have even numbers, no yellow or orange flowers also while i was there sometimes i would sleep on my back but i would sleep with my hands crossed on my chest this really freaked her out and she would then spend the rest of the night waking me up every 1/2 hour to make sure i had not died.

Mark..why not just ask Nat what she is NOT superstitious of?

I remember when Iryna was here in the UK with me, I was helping her make a meal and was whistling, she kept telling me to stop it was bad luck, something about whistling indoors makes you loose all your money??

That was just one of maybe 10 superstitions I broke in three weeks, there was no hope for me really he he

In the Navy, it is "illegal" to whistle as it can be taken for the "pipes" aboard a ship. There is only one person(s) who are "allowed" to wistle and that is the chefo's and the reason behind this is if they are whistling, they are not eating the food!!!
Yes, based on very old times but true!

Is this the new Aussie way, hi jack a thread and then go hell for leather so that the subject changes that often that no one knows whose thread it is or what it is meant to be about he he .........then we may aswell just have one BIG thread and talk about everything that crops up!!, much easier to keep track of things than having to jump around new threads all over the place.

Sorry AKMike.... I will never eat something just because the lovely woman made it if I do not like it... I have a sister who experiments with different dishes and if by BIL or me had said we had liked something that we did not, we would keep getting it... she is to good of a cook to have her make bad food... I would MUCH more tell her this dish does not taste good to ME, but I know you prepared it well..

then take cover .....

but, you hopefully will not have to eat it again..

Personally I like that 'pink soup'. It took a bit to get used to it, but since I'm rather fond of the cook I kept eating it now I enjoy it.Tanya says that the Russians make a different kind than Ukrainians.
She makes 5 different types(all with meat) but they're all pink from the beets. BUT if it's cooked longer the pink goes away!
