OK, this topic should be one for the Japanese Meeting Place---if there is one.

Seems we are getting more Anime and Manga books and videos in the stores here in Seattle. I know these are both names of styles of Japanese animation,
but are they two distinct styles.......or are they two names for the same thing??

Yes they're difference, animes are cartoons, while mangas are comics. Like most comics, the characters in mangas are more developed and the storyline usually takes longer to come to a conclusion in the Rumiko style. When mangas are turned into anime, prob 5-7 mangas are condensed into 1 episode of anime. Another difference is the style of drawings (ie big eyes, funky hair colors).. mangas are usually in black and white, and the characters look more realistic. However, more mangas are now resembling animes in artistic style. The biggest difference is the grammar, if you ever watched anime in Japanese, you will notice they speak in plain form (ie dictionary form) a lot, the speech that are used by kids or by those of equals in everyday speech. For instance the verb to go is iku, animes usually use this verb and keep it in dictionary form. Where as mangas use verb tenses (ikemasu, itte, ikema****a) going, went.

Oh yeah. this Japanese style has conquer the world. I had a student (not excellent) but she was rather good cartoonist, in these japanese style.
