Wow! What an adventure on the way home!

Posted by: solstice

Great story, I'm sure everyone will continue to follow the adventure. It's great hearing about relationships that work.

Posted by: blucatz

Don't you dare stop the story now...LOL, great read Chris.

Posted by: Chrismc

Thanks guys, there is more but if I add it now will be a bit disjointed, some things I forgot to add as I was writing it, I guess the old grey cells are going slowly

My next trip is being planned now, should be around the 20th March when I fly out again, this time I will be getting married over in the Ukraine, plans are in hand now for the wedding, then I will be coming home for about 7 or 8 weeks then flying out again to bring both the girls home with me, or they will fly over on their own, we have not decided yet.

There is a lot of paperwork and legal stuff to sort out as always still and trips down to London for me to get things Apoistilled and trips to Kiev for Irena after we are married and for the visa application and so forth, so tons still to do, but if all goes to plan we shall be married in late March and the two of them will be here mid June. We both cannot wait for this to happen and we can all be together full time.

PS the young one is a little cutie really, and loves it when we gang up on her mum and tease her as in the bowling session. We had a big family hug the three of us when I said goodbye to her, she loved it that all three of us hugged each other I think she is looking forward to the three of us living together, she has never had a father in her life before and she seems to love having me around.

Sounds like you will have a great family Chrismc.

Looks like we will be getting married about the same time. I don't have a date but it wil be in March sometime.

Take care and I wish a lifetime of happiness for you and your family.

CONGRATS!!!

Thanks Steve for your good wishes and of course I pass mine on to you also. It will be a coincidence after what we have both been through, over the last two years but it wil also be a happy ending.

Good luck
Chris

That is a terrific story so far, and hopefully a lot more happy chapters to go through!

Congrats!

I always do that! Write a whole story and forget a lot of stuff on the way. It must be an age thing mate!

Will your 2 ladies be flying from Kiev? If so, why not do what I did and get Pavel to meet them and take them to the airport? He's a great guy and they will be very safe in his hands. Just a thought....

P.S. Give me a shout sometime soon. I may have some interesting news and info for you. My coffee pot has the hots for you too.

Yes I guess so

Yes they will, but they will probably fly from Chernivsty straight into Boryspol, so no panic. However, if she thinks she needs any help on her trip there for the Visa and Interview I will give you a shout.

I got some good news today, Irena arranged a meeting with her ex and told him she was getting married and moving to England and she wanted him to sign a letter stating she had approval from him for her daughter to leave the country. She then dragged him down to the Notaries office and got a letter notarised then and there!

We had discussed how she was going to do this because this was one major possbile stumbling block that we had little control over, and she knew that if he discussed this with his mother and sister who are not very nice people shall we say, they would have probably tried stopping him giving approval, so she called him yesterday for a meeting this lunchtime and hit him with it there and then, so now we have notarised approval and everything should be fine.

She didn't tell me she had arranged the meeting, but just asked me to wish her luck for today, I asked her what for? but she said she would tell me later anyway it all went perfectly, a well executed plan

Posted by: Chrismc

I forgot, and yesterday I received my Certificate of No Impediment so its off to the British Embassy in London now to get all documents legalised.

I know! You told me earlier!

Well done my friend! I'm glad everything is going according to plan and I am looking forward to seeing you married soon! Save me some cake!

If everything was this easy, the world would be a boring place to live in!

I will Mike pity we will miss each other in Kiev late March/early April would have liked to meet you both , when she told me what she had done yesterday I told her I was really proud of her and the way she had tackled this, she is a great gal!

Posted by: Chrismc

Thanks Shaun and Chris, one of the final pieces of the jigsaw is now in place, assuming I don;t have any problems getting all my documents legalised next week, our next step is The Wedding

Posted by: Chrismc

I was speaking to Irena last night and she surprised me again, she is now talking about taking driving lessons in Chernivsti and getting her test passed before she comes to the UK, it makes sense it is a lot lot cheaper, she is one determined lady, she has not had any reason or ambition to learn to drive in 35 years and is now considering it, the reason, she tells me, is that she may need to to help me when she is in the UK.

We were also discussing possible business opportunities last night, something that we could do that would tie the Ukraine and the UK together, there are many things they cry out for in the Ukraine that we have in abundance over here, her sister who is a successful business women in Chernivsti is also very keen to get involved somehow.

We actually did a trial run of some manfacturing equipment before Christmas on behalf of one of the businesses she works for and it worked out quite well, so there are lots of options.

I told her she doesn't need to work but she says she doesn't want to be a burden on me and to help me and our little family as much as she can.

Sounds like a good idea. If memory serves me well, she can drive here on her licence for 1 year???? If I'm correct, she would have plenty of time to pass a UK test.

I'm watchin! I'm watchin!!!!

Posted by: Chrismc

Yes we spoke again about this and she knows it makes sense to pass her test there. I know RW who have been driving over here 2 years and still not taken their UK driving test, but I am not sure what the rules are.

Well I booked my tickets last night for my next trip, 3 weeks this time, starting 19th March, Irena has been to the RAGS office and the documents I had legalised at the British Embassy here, are fine, so she is booking the wedding date this week, probably Saturday 29th March

I bet you can't wait! I would be like...

Maybe I'll get a chance to see you before you go, because it's only 16 days, 17 hours, 54 minutes and 26 seconds until Larisa arrives (I just had to get that in there somewhere)!

Great Chris, yes of course anytime mate, give me a shout yep I can't wait, not long now, but a bit longer than your wait

But... Your wait is going to result in you being together forever! My wait is only for 5 weeks with my honey. But... Who knows where it may lead?.....

16 days! This is the LONGEST month I've ever known! You are right of course. It does only seem like 5 minutes since you were here, but it feels like 5 months since Larisa was!

Yes my wait is for the best, but then I will have another short wait until she comes to England for good But I think and hope your wait this time may prove to be very positive.

Hey Redhawk,

Don't worry, I sent in my paperwork October 19th, 2007 and received the 1st NOA on October 25th. I have not received the 2nd NOA yet either. The USCIS does an audit in January and it slows things down, so hopefully it will pick. You are not alone!!

Chris, I wish you the best on you wedding. I hope you will be happy with your new wife.

G, with the way things have gone, it may be 2009 or 2010 before she actually sets foot on American soil.

Posted by: redhawk

thanks alot guys, i suddenly feel a little better.lawyer says any day for noa2.(approval) its strange how they work it,because lawyer also told me that they've had cases sent in december getting approval already, yet on uscis website,it says july 2007!
i would hate to audit anything in that office!!
the one lucky thing i have is the fact that i have vermont, who is the fastest. also,i did my driving test in tampa for the postal service and passed, just waiting on a phone call,(already sailed through postal exam) so it looks as though soon, ill be able to "go postal" with some degree of legitimacy. here come the jokes....

Posted by: TheWongs

Someone ask for jokes?

It was the postman's last day on the job after 35 years in the same neighborhood.

When he arrived at the first house on his route, he was greeted by the whole family there, who congratulated him and sent him on his way with a big gift envelope.

At the second house, they presented him with a box of fine cigars.

At the third house, he was met at the door by a beautiful woman in a revealing negligee. She took him by the hand, led him through the door, led him up the stairs to the bedroom where she blew his mind with the most passionate love he had ever experienced.

When he had had enough, they went downstairs, where she fixed him a giant breakfast: eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, and freshly squeezed orange juice.

When he was truly satisfied, she poured him a cup of steaming coffee. As she was pouring, he noticed a fiver sticking out from under the cup's bottom edge.

"All this was just too wonderful for words," he said, "but what's the fiver for?"

"Well," she said, "last night, I told my husband that today would be your last day, and that we should do something special for you. I asked him what to give you.

He said, 'Screw him! Give him a fiver.'"

The lady smiled and said, "The breakfast was my idea."

Many congratulations, Chris! I have not posted since Christmas, but I am still alive and enjoying a new life. My lady has settled in well and her son is now in school (has learned some English sentences) and he is enjoying it. Marriage takes place soon - I made a mistake of changing jobs (same company) at the same time as my fiance came over and could not take time off for some time.

I hope I will have time to write something, but I am enjoying stability after years of travelling.

Great news Goeast, I am glad she is settling in OK and you are all getting on well. Goodluck on your forthcoming marriage.

Yes I leave in less than 2 days now and get married at 3pm Saturday 29th March, looking forward to it all.

I have a little necklace for Ira's daughter and I am taking over something new, old, borrowed and blue, I have told her about our traditions too, but not told her what I am taking. I will not post it here as she may well read this thread.

Her daughter was trying on her dress this weekend, I am not sure who is getting married here, mother or daughter but both are very happy

Have a good trip, Chris, and wish you all the best for the future.

Posted by: Chrismc

Thanks Goeast, how are things going with you and your good lady?

Posted by: GoeastLJ

Hi Chris, things are going well, thanks. My 14 year step-son-to-be is in school and settling in well. His English is improving. He sometimes finds it frustrating that he cannot speak English, but he is a very determined lad. My lady and I should tie the knot anyday after tomorrow. My lady's English is improving fast. We laugh at some of the language misunderstandings we sometimes have. We both now know that we want to be together.

My lady is from Sarny which is near Rivne and does not trust banks and she does not understand the whole fuss about the economic turmoil at the moment. She is also surprised at the amount of money that we pay in taxes? We have put aside an each day for talk economy - bills, licences, insurances, utility bills Her biggest surprise was the tv license!

Posted by: Chrismc

Thats great Goeast, yes I think I will have some of those discussions too, but being a chief accountant Ira ha a handle on a lot of it already.

Only 7 hours, 30 minutes and 0 seconds before I leave and

10 days, 20 hours, 30 minutes and 0 seconds until the wedding

Posted by: Chrismc

I will write a little here, as soon as I get time. Suffice to say everything is fantastic, but I have spent the last 3 days in an out of every Government Office and Official Building Chernivsti has to offer, I didn't know there were so many

Everything is now in hand for next Saturday, just a few more visits to do tomorrow and a call to the British Embassy in Kiev.

Another tearjerker to report from the little one, but I will add it to my report.

See you all soon

Chris

Posted by: Justjohn

glad to see all is in hand, best of luck mate, see you when you return home

Posted by: Chrismc

Thanks John

Does Sveta go home tomorrow?? I seem to remember the 25th being mentioned. Good luck on your upcoming wedding too.

PS
We have spent the morning at the RAGS office again, more documents, lots here officially, more rooms I have now visited and official looking offices but I found out today that we will actually be legally married on Friday at 11.00am, we have to go back to RAGS again for our Marriage Certificate which means we will be legally married. But we still will have the official wedding on Saturday!

A funny system, but never mind it seems to work

I am at Ira's office just now but we have to go we are doing some other business also today so we have a meeting arranged outside the city.

Posted by: Chrismc

So the story continues:A long journey as usual, 23 hours this time I arrived at 1.30am in the morning. A better trip via Munich but the 8+ hour road journey when I got here was murder, pity they don’t put a few extra flights on per day to the Chernivsti International Airport, one each way per day hardly qualifies for International status ;D

Everything is fantastic, but I have spent the last 3 days in an out of every Government Office and Official Building Chernivsti has to offer, I didn't know there were so many

Well, the trip back the RAGS Regional Directors Office went without a hitch, and various walks up and down Kobylyanska Street to the bank and back to pay the numerous different to fees took us most of the day. Kobylyanska Street used to be the most beautiful street in Chernivsti, just look at it now, they started work on it last summer and a sign at the end of the street now says it will not be finished until October. As this is where everyone gets married, the brides and grooms have to jump the holes in the road to get in and out of the RAGS Office, I heard that if the Ukrainians get their way, this new sport will soon be an Olympic event!

The same day we visited the notaries to get our documents notarised again no problems there Irena had already got my copies via email, and she had them already translated, so we just had the originals to get documented and checked over.

So we now have everything in hand for next Saturday, just a few more visits to do tomorrow and to pick up our Marriage Licence and a call to the British Embassy in
Kiev to sort out a few queries and we can start to relax.

Pictures are of Kobylyanska Street where the RAGS Office is located and the one with the big hole in the front (Pic2) is the entrance to the RAGS Office where we get married

Posted by: Chrismc

Yesterday we also visited the hotel where we are holding our wedding reception, and agreed on the menu, members table decorations, numbers etc etc. We took with us Ira’s sister and brother in law and a few other family members.

Then we visited a very large open air market to buy some wedding towels and glasses, and a few items for Ira’s hair do! this place was quite extraordinary. It comprises of hundreds and hundreds of stalls, a lot of them selling bridal costumes and dresses etc and every type of wedding accessory there is, and YES if you buy there, you have to try the garments on outside quite an eye opener for us men, watching semi naked women dancing around outside in the cold weather trying on wedding gowns and dresses. Ira had hers made in her city, so none of these shenanigans for her

But that’s not all, along with lots of stalls selling clothing, at this place you can buy everything else known to man, from whole cars to parts, to tools, to food, to everything in between. It was one heck of a place and no doubt we will organise another trip back there just to take in the experience before I return home.

A few pictures of the market

Saturday we went to buy some rings and shoes for Ira, she had already picked out 2 or 3 favourite rings for us prior to my visit, however, this didn’t reduce the shopping exercise one jot, we still visited every gold jewellers in the city I think until we decided on two rings that were just what we wanted. I purchased those and then it was off to get her some shoes, again she had already chosen some, but that doesn’t mean you cannot look for more, just to be sure. Well that took another few hours and she eventually agreed on some she had already decided on weeks before.

We had lunch at Ira’s parents as usual, they won’t let me waste money on food here, it is hard work getting a pass to go out for a meal in an evening but anyway the meal came with the obligatory Gorilka, a few hours later though we had to go to Ira’s sister and brother in law to ask them to be our wedding parents. Of course this meant another meal a few beers and a bottle of Cognac between two of us men, I have done nothing but drink since I arrived here! Well they took some convincing, but finally 3 drunken hours later agreed

Sunday we had lunch at her parents as usual and Ira has just gone to get her nails done, on our way we dropped off Nata at a birthday party one of her friends was having out in the sleeping district, as Ira will be tied up a few hours, I have to get a taxi back to the apartment block later, go and collect Nata and get back home somehow, should be quite interesting. I then have to entertain the little one for a couple of hours before all three of us returning to the in-laws for dinner tonight.

Irena told me that when she was on her way to Kiev to collect me Nata asked her grandmother if she could tell all her friends at school that she now has a Daddy, she has really taken to me and is always doing things for me, she has constantly come out with some of the most tear jerking statements any 7 year old could and I couldn’t wish for a more caring and sweet little girl for a step daughter. Ira tells me having a family and father means more to her than any presents and gifts, and she has so wanted a father in her life just like most of her friends at school. It is most humbling to hear some of the things she says to me at times and brings me close to tears, it really does.

We arrive late at the in-laws as the manicure took ONLY 4 ½ hours I really don’t know how it takes so long but it does, anyway we have a lovely meal and say our goodbyes and leave around 9.30pm, and go back to our apartment and settle in for the night.

An hour later we get a call from mum in law, Nata is ill, can we go quickly, we get dressed and call a taxi, and when we walk in to the bedroom where Nata is in bed we see her face is completely red and covered` with red blotches, looks like some sort of allergy, but I have never seen anything like this before, her body is also covered` in red blotches and some of them are swelling up like eggs. Ira calls the emergency doctors, and within 20 minutes two nurses arrive, they immediately administer an injection and give Nata a concoction to drink. 30 minutes later she is starting to settle down and they give her another injection, they say she will be OK now but make sure the redness doesn’t get worse and they leave. We stay for a couple of hours and around 12.30am Nata is fine and sleeping and the redness and swellings are starting to disappear, her grandmother is sleeping with her and will call us if she gets worse.

The next morning we get up early and go straight up to the in-laws and see that Nata is a lot better now and is back to normal, the red blotches have gone and she is feeling fine, Ira calls her doctor and he tells her just to get some tablets fro her and also mentions that the allergy could have been caused by a banana, apparently she ate one at the party and whilst not normally a problem, the doctor states they have been causing allergic reactions through out Ukraine recently due to the preservatives they use on them during transportation.

I glad Nata is feeling better, when reading it, it also did sound like some sort of allergic reaction to something.
Keep the reports coming, again it is so wonderful to read of these happing endings, I again wish you all the happiness in the wrld, you have certainly found a wonderful woman (even with the 4 1/2 manicures!!!) and a beautiful family

I take Nata a little silver necklace that I had bought for her to wear for our wedding day, when she opened it her eyes lit up and she was lost for words, Ira tells me she is so happy because it is the first real womens thing she has ever had. She starts to dance around very happy, and obviously is feeling a lot better now. She loves the necklace and runs round the house showing everybody it.

Today we have our penultimate visit to the RAGS again, we are formally told to go back Friday to collect our Marriage certificate when we will be formally and legally married, this takes a few hours, interestingly they have the office where you get your marriage documents completed right next door to the office you get divorced in, I point this out to Irena and say it is very convenient, she just laughs, “yes daaarlink, we are very clever people!” it is also interesting that while we wait in the corridor, the divorce office door seems to get a lot more business than the marriage office.

So we finish our business, the forms are duly completed and typed up and we are told to go to another office to get them officially stamped. They love their little schtamps here!

We have arranged to meet Irena’s sister and Brother in Law to sort out some business, I am also looking for business opportunities while I am here this trip and I have heard of one that may be ideal, so we have all arranged to meet up with the owners of a factory on the outskirts of the city to discuss matters. The meeting goes very well and I am impressed by what I see and the quality if their products, and we agree to meet again next Wednesday when we will be taken to their manufacturing facility about 30 minutes outside the city, gives me time to do a little research also.

We decide to go to the Bukovyna Hotel for lunch, this is where our wedding reception will be held later this week, (see pictures) We have a very nice lunch and discuss the meeting we have just had and decide to go back to the apartment for an hour or so. On our way back Irena gets a phone call, Nata is ill again, she decides to go on her own as she has a driving lesson later which is in another part of the city, so I tell her I will go back to the apartment and to call me if she needs anything. About half an hour later she calls me to say that Nata is not too bad but has some red blotches again and will take her too the hospital, she will call me in an hour or so. Later she calls and tells me the doctor says Nata is OK and has given her some medicine to take and to just keep her on a strict diet for a few days. She tells me she will stay with her for a couple of hours and make sure she is OK before coming back home. Obviously the driving lesson is cancelled.

The bad news is somehow I manage to break the LCD screen on my digital camera, so I am now pointing and hoping for the best as it is nigh on impossible to get it repaired here

Chris,
It is really fantastic to read your posts and to see how things are progressing, I know this takes time out of your days, and there are more important buisness to attend to, so I think I can speak for everyone and say thank you for sharing all of this with us. It is a great motivation for people like me still searching to read your news.
Every time you write about Nata and her joy and excitement, gives me goose bumps and a lump in my throat it is deeply touching, and only hope she will get over her bought with her illness, my prayers and thoughts are with her.
Good luck also with the buisness venture , the pieces are falling into place

May I also be the first at RMP to congratulate you on being "Offically" married, it should be around 24:00 Friday evening in Ukraine.

BTW Nata asked Irena last night, I know you are married now, can I now call Uncle Chris - Dad! makes you well up it really does and yes she is fine now thanks.

Just a quick update on the NEW Ukrainian wedding laws, you now have to get married twice

This is how important the marriage ceremonies are to women from the FSU or Ukraine at least, you now have two weddings on two separate days

My lady has spent months getting everything organised down to the last minute detail, no stone is left unturned and when I arrived here two weeks ago all we had to do was sort out the legal paperwork, now that is no mean task, it took most of each day for a week doing so, but in the end yesterday we went to pick up our Marriage Certificate from the RAGS Director, however, this is not just a normal office visit, now under Ukrainian Law as of 5 months ago you have to go through wedding ceremony number 1 - so we did do yesterday, it lasted maybe 15 minutes, with witnesses and we had to swear our vows to each other.

That was a taster of what is to come, my lady (wife as of yesterday) has now been at the hairdressers and manicurist for nearly three hours, today at 3pm we will be married again, but this time in a full on ceremony at the RAGS Office which will have been preceded by all the usual shenanigans that tends to happen at these events, IE I have to get past an armed guard of well wishers and friends and family all trying to charge me to see my already wife, then we have a short ceremony in her parents home where we are given blessings and eventually we all go to the RAGS for around 2.30pm, we take part in our second ceremony in two days and later we have a full reception meal with guests and everything else that is organised for these events through to the early hours of the morning.

Sorry, cannot go into more detail, I now have to learn my wedding speech in Ukrainian and then go and get married, for the second time in two days

pa pa!

Wow, that has changed alot.
Just remember that during the reception dinner when they shout/chant "Skoyka" it really doesn't mean to kiss the bride.. LOL ask me how I know..

Do you mean "Gorko"?

Larisa is standing beside me chanting now! She says it means to kiss the bride. Maybe she is hinting to me, so I'd better get going!

By the way.... How do you know? (you did say "ask me how I know").

Posted by: TheWongs

Hey Chris!

Larisa sends you a big hug and we both send our congratulations on your first wedding. I'm sure by the time you read this, you will have had your second wedding, so.... another "CONGRATULATIONS" from us both!!!!!!!!!!

We need to get together soon to discuss these new laws and this process. Guess who else is getting married!!

You're right! I remembered it as Skoyka all this time, maybe as a result of too many vodkas?

LOL, I figured it meant a toast by the way everyone was holding up their drinks as if for another toast.. Then after a tap on the shoulder and a quick word of advise I figured it out..
Silly Western Tourist mistake... Oh well..

I can't believe no one else caught this one liner and didn't ask you about it. Since Larisa is there, what was the news she was making you wait for? You getting married?

No Mike not Skoya and no Chris not Gorky, they chant 'Bitter' meaning that I have to take a drink of champagne and kiss the bride for a sweet taste, remember this is Ukrainian, not Russian.

Needless to say, this chant of 'Bitter' went on all night, it must have happend at least 20 times Not that I'm complaining of course

Posted by: Chrismc

Just a quick update, not written anyting as I have been celbrating for 3 days,

Nata has now started calling me daddy, or dad, she got her way in the end and yesterday Nata came up to me and sat on my knee and just started kissing my cheek for no reason, she is a really loving little girl and it makes me feel so good, it is so humbling that a little girl or any child of 7 can act like this.

My father in law asked me at the wedding, to make sure I look after little Nata, never mentioned his daughter Irena

Chris

BTW

CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS (TheWongs)

Need to run it past the wife but I think you remember correctly. Most of the chants are "Gorko" (pronounced "gorka") which does mean "bitter" and the newlyweds have to kiss in order to make the champagne sweet again. However, if the chant is "Skolko" (pronounced "skolka") meaning "how many", everybody counts the number of seconds the newlyweds kiss for, and that's the number of children they will have!

CONGRATULATIONS to all of you, Chris!

Run it past the wife I did, and she says she's never heard of "skolko" rather than "gorko". The tradition of counting the seconds to predict the number of children does exist, but there's no special chant for this... Oh well!

Posted by: blucatz

Chris, you never did say how your visit to that production facility went. You gonna be able to do business over there or what? If you are, are you considering a possible move to Ukraine?

Posted by: Chrismc

Well guys Bitter was the chant and also they counted te seconds we kissed, not every time but more often than not. Also the younger ones started to sing various songs the drunker they got and everyone had a fantastic time, the next day we started again and so it went on, after nearly 3 days of celebrating we were fit for nothing.

John Sveta

Thanks John, say hello to Sveta for me. BTW is Sveta taking your name? Irena has taken my name which means she has had to have two new passports, this is not a quick process, even when you know someone who knows someone if you get my jist. The Ukrainian one is about a week if you pay extra the International normally 3 months, so we can speed that one up but still it will take a month.

Of course we also have Nata to worry about and getting her on a passport, so it is not as easy, but even so the fastest we have been told we can do it is one month.

Just thought I would let you know, because if Sveta is taking your name at the wedding, there will be a delay, give me a call if you want more info, I think I know more about Ukrainian marriage laws now than the RAGS Director

Be good to see you both again soon.

Hey Blucatz

The visit went great, so much so that I am gong with them today to their manufacturing facility outside the city to check things over, I am also meeting another company today all being well to give me alternative options.

What will come of all this I don't know, but it gives me options and possibilities. I would move to Ukraine if I could make enough money to support two homes, it would be very hard to do so though, I love it here and things are so much easier to get done if you have money But my main focuss is on importing some products from Ukraine into the UK and selling them on, I think I have found something that is spot on, we shall see.

Good luck to you on your business adventure. Depending on the shipping costs and your prices, you probably would do ok. What kind of problems do you see is shipping the products from Ukraine to UK? I was wondering what kind of problems shipping products from Russia to US for retail sale myself. Even if its possible, I don't know yet, still a long way off yet. But still something rolling around in my head (allot of room up there you know).

Chris: if it works out -- maybe we can help you import the item into the US and start a big business. Especially since the US and Ukraine are becoming good friends.

Hi Bluecatz

I went back today to the factory, had a tour, discussed some business, now I have a lot of homework to do, but it looks promising. Shipping to the UK will not be a problem, but I have to enquire about import duties etc yet, that may kill it stone dead I have another contact in Ukraine who can ship goods over for me, looks like costing around £2000 ($4000) per round trip, but whether that is expensive or not all depends on how much I can get on one run?

Anyway, today I am looking at land, I heard yesterday that agricultural land is going cheap outside the city and there is a great possibility (90% +)it will be approved for housing in the next 3-5 years. I cannot buy it, but Irena could put it in her name, it is not actually for sale even, but as long as you know someone who is well in with the local Mayors, you have a chance, I just happen to know that person so we will go and look at some fields today and see if there is a deal to be done.

Maybe Blues, actually the stuff I have found is not being sold inn the US at the moment, at least not from this factory and I am sure it would sell very well, it was something I was thinking of for the future, early days yet, but we shall see

LOL my speach was OK apart from one paragraph, which I struggled on, but I think they all got the jist of it, and to be honest no one cared as I left it long enough so everyone had had loads of Gorilka, Cognac and Champange first

On my way home now, sat at Boryspol, whiling away the hours had to say goodbye to the wife (nice to be able to say that ) not easy that was.

Great to hear about your news too.

The next day we get up early and go straight to the in-laws, Nata is looking a lot better now and she feels fine and seems to be back to her normal self. We spend an hour or so with her and then leave to get some more of our chores done ready for the wedding.

More running around various official departments and offices, and then we start to plan things we need for our visa application next week and also as Irena is now changing her name to mine she will loose her Ukrainian passport and will have to get that and her International passport changed into her new name. I have already contacted the British Embassy in Kiev and they tell me we will also need to get another apostilled letter from her ex giving her authority to allow Nata to leave the country. Oh well more trips to Notaries and the like I see coming soon.

We have had enough for today and decide to go out for meal tonight at one of our favourite restaurants just outside the city, it is called Roxelanas and is named after a famous Ukrainian lady who was sold into slavery by the Crimea Tarta’s read more here . We have a lovely meal as usual and return to our apartment.

The next day we have flowers, car decoration and things like that to sort out, and of course some shopping, but today I will also have chance to see Nata having one of her English lessons as they have an open class at her private school, this is a good experience and it is nice to see that the whole lesson is conducted in English only. Following the lesson we have a meeting and discuss giving Nata private lessons ‘one on one‘ for the next couple of months until they come to England and agree to arrange for her two lessons a week starting next Tuesday.

Well day after day is spent organising tings for the wedding and the legal paperwork, that is necessary, we seem to be living at the RAGS Offices mostly, I don’t know why all documents etc cannot be done at the one office, but no they love to make you walk up and down the streets, calling in one office after another and one bank after another paying the fees that are starting to build up. It is amazing how much all these incidental, fees for translations, notaries, legal documents, forms, etc add up over time. During one of our many office visits we also pop into the photographers to make sure the photographer and videographer know what we want, we have had to organise two of each for the wedding as only the official RAGS photographers are allowed to film and take photos inside the RAGS office we have another TV cameraman from Irenas work taking care of the whole of the rest of the wedding day, but he is not allowed to film inside at the ceremony, this is Ukraine, it’s normal! You learn to live with stuff like that.

Thanks azamuner, it was a lot of hard work and legal form filling and what not, but it was all worth it, now we have three new passports to arrange and another visa application for two people and of course pay all the extortionate fees, £1050 ($2100) for the visa's alone But this is one of the prices one has to pay for these long distance relationships, it will be all worth it in the long term.

Thanks Chris. My girl has some very interesting requests for me when I am there. As you know she is an English teacher and she asked me if I would come visit her students at her school so they can ask me questions about the U.S. and different oppurtunities that are in the U.S. Also they will have other questions for me and I think that it will be alot of fun & very interesting.

I am really looking forward to it. She also said the teachers there want to meet me because she told them I am a friend of hers from america & they would love to have me visit the school & talk to the kids and give them some hope about their future with some encouriging words.

I am really excited about it. She told the students the kind of work that I do and they are all facinated with asking me questions. Should be fun!

You'll have a blast talking with the students. I had the pleasure of going to some classes with my wife. The classes were given by the Mormons in Cherkassy, and everyone was asking all sorts of questions while practicing their english skills.
We're headed out for Ukraine tomarrow but we'll be in Kiev and points south to the Black Sea. But Odessa isn't in the agenda. Too bad..

Good luck with your trip too.

I had the pleasure of talking to an English class in a village school near Kerch. It was one of the best days I had in Ukraine!

Chris... Are you home now? If so, are you working again? Maybe you would like a coffee some night soon (That was my nice way of asking if we can get together for a chat)?

Hi Akmike,
Yes , to bad you won't be in Odessa when I 'm there. I would love to get together with you & have a drink & chat. And I am really looking forward to talking with the students. My girl said everyone is waiting for me to arrive and they are more excited than I am.

Yeah it's too bad but we're going to be east of you too far. You could always make a slight detour to see some fresh sights!
But I think your sights are set elsewhere! LOL
You'll love talking to the students. I had others stop me and had me talk to their kids just to see if thery really had been working on their lessons! One of them was a very nice looking girl.. Of course I was happy to talk to her!

The Wedding Day! (No1)

Well eventually Friday comes around, this is to be our first wedding day!. We have Irena’s sister and brother in law acting as wedding parents and they are responsible for getting us to the RAGS for the short ceremony. We arrive about 30 minutes early, just the four of us, we fill in some more forms hand over our passports etc and are eventually called into a large office. New Ukrainian laws that came into force in the last 5 months or so dictate this is now how it is done here, although, you can have the two ceremonies on the same day, we elected to have this the day before s
