I met a russian girl a few weeks ago in a bar. She is on vacation here (in America) for the summer. She is extremely sweet and a lot of the things I want in a girl. We have very little in the way of a language barrier and things seemed to progress quickly - she is very affectionate towards me and really seems to like me.

Then I started noticing that she was completely different in public. When we are out in groups of friends (ours and hers) she completely - and I mean completely - ignores me. It's like I am not there. She does not even look my direction. No comments are directed toward me. no looks. no physical contact. nothing. All the while she will talk and laugh with everyone else present. Of course, this seems very strange to me, because as soon as we are alone again, everything seems great. She suddenly is very affectionate and smiles a lot. There seems to be no change to this forthcoming.

I am wondering if this is just cultural, or if I should take it as a negative sign. If it is cultural, does it typically change after getting to know the person better?

There are cultural differences, of course, and you will learn much about them by reading this and other similar boards.

However, this does not strike me as being normal at all, Russian or whatever nationality you're talking about. She may be an "RW" but the more important letter here is the "W", not the "R".

I could understand if she were reticent to kiss, hug and so on in public (and I don't know where your 'private' relationship is at), but to completely ignore you like this.....

I think you should not let this situation continue unresolved. Be totally frank with her about the way she's coming across. She could even be testing you on your willingness to take s**t off her, and you'll fail the test if you don't address it soon!

It's up to you to decide whether she is messing around with you, but there are plenty of FSUW out there who won't play games that you can get just as easily from many a WW.

thanks for your reply. I don't understand all the abbreviations, but i get the gist of it. I agree with you, I think it is a problem and not a cultural one. Win some lose some I guess.

Perhaps Chris is right, however a second possibilty exist.
She don't want people to know that you two see each other. Just to soon.
Just ask her her question, nicely. !! who knows about you two. if the answer is nobody or few. You got the answer.
