Broadband

I have just setup broadband with Tiscali. Currently our broadband is working through a normal telephone wire, without any filters or splitters. The new modem clearly works fine, but do I need to use different cables for broadband than I did dial-up? What is bizarre is that I signed up for 1MBps, but the computer says I'm getting 2.3MBps when I'm online!

Sorry, I just realised this should in the off topic section - oops

Same cables should be fine to use.

thanks

your lucky I couldn't get mine to work without filters which cost me more as I didn't go through an ISP to set my system up. But sheez I am a happy chappy now it is going.

You do not need the filters for broadband to work, the filters are to allow your telephone to work normally by filtering out the broadband data. Without the filters you would hear an annoying clickng sound on your phone.

Sorry to disagree with you Swin, but in my case it wouldn't work as my modem kept 'allowing' the phone to have precedence over the data transfer without filters, this did not allow the modem to log on in time to my service provider. With filters both aspects work perfectly, as the filters seperate the different flows on the line to there proper places allowing both to work as seperate units.

Im assuming you're using DSL b/c you're using the phone line. It is recommended you use filters b/c broadband data packets and phone data are sent and receive at different frequencies. If you're not using the filter you can expect discon from the net when the phone rings. As to new cables, it should of came with your modem. Plug your phone line into your modem, plug the Cat 5 cable (8 wires instead of telephone 2 or 4 wires) from you modem to you NIC card. If you're going from Modem to NIC, then the Straight (regular) Cable is just fine. But if you're using two PC like I am, NIC to NIC or NIC to HUB, then you will definately need a Crossover Cable. Im surprise you're receiving a higher bandwidth then what you signed up for these reasons.

1: Even though you signed up for a 1Mbps bandwidth. It must be divided between your downstream and upstream data. Usually 728bps downstream, 272 upstream.

2: The distance from you home to the central hub in you area will affect you're bandwidth. In order to max out at 1Mbps you will virtually have to be next door to the hub.

3: TCP Receive Window is set by you're operation system in you're registry (35,000 for Windows 2000, higher for XP), which is usually too low for downloading at 1Mbps. I had to tweak my TCP up to 150,000 to get my downstream to 4.7Mbps of the advertised 5Mbps.

However, 1Mbps or 5Mbps is all mute if the site you're downloading from can only upload at 56kps.

I would run a speed test to determine what your true bandwidth is to different location in your country. If it's over 1Mbps and you only pay for 1Mbps, then they screwed up so it's ur gain.

Thanks Menehune, in answer to you question, yes I am using a phoneline. We have 2 filters currently, but one of them is not valid. The modem socket on one of these filters from a phone socket uses a standard phone cable (forget the name, is it RJ something?) to connect my computer online. We have a longer RJ11 cable which is much needed and that will soon be fitted underneath the carpet and should make everything work 100%.

I had originally thought everything was fine, but still it currently isn't.
