Anyone know IF we need to pay a duty on an engagement ring at customs? On a recent trip, I met a guy from Calif. at Borispol airport in Kiev (Ukraine). He brought a necklace to his babe and had to pay 30% duty at $1300. He was pissed that he had to pay that much just to give it away.

others are more knowledgable on the IF question, but the question is why are you bringing such expensive jewelry? read up on the forum about the fsu and the custom of engagement rings.

i brought it in my wallet (wedding and engagement rings)......i put other jewlery deep in my shaving kit.....4 trips, no problems.....
