Travel Caution: Moscow / St. Petersburg in July: G8 Summit

There is a discussion of increased airport security in Moscow in July, and I thought I would start a separate thread in case anyone is planning to visit Russia during this time.

It's Russia's turn to host the big G8 Summit, an economic forum attended by the leaders of (some of) the world's most powerful countries.

The Australian government has issued a travel warning for Russia during this period:

http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-...w/Advice/Russia

"We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Russia because of the threat of terrorist activity, particularly by Chechen separatists."

"Russian authorities continue to warn of the possibility of further terrorist attacks in Moscow. Russia holds the G8 Presidency in 2006 and several high profile events, including the G8 Summit in St Petersburg in mid-2006, may be catalysts for further terrorist acts."

The actual Summit dates are: July 15 to 17

I imagine the security is going to be insane during this time. I changed my flights to arrive a week after it's finished.

Do an advanced search on 'Summit' in these forums for more info.

Cheers!

scotch.
