Are there any free russian chat lines where you can chat with russian women? I can't seem to find anything like that on for example yahoo chat, but there are chat rooms there from other poor countries.

Try registering at mail.ru. E-mail service will accept English characters/fonts... so get a mailbox... and then head to the chat rooms ('chat' is in russian, which yati=the funny looking *y*).

There is an English-speaking room at mail.ru that is wonderful! If you *troll* through the other rooms- use manners. We english-speakers are trespassing outside of the english-speaking rooms, so expect some teasing-guff-indignation that we are outside of our "zones". But its surprising how many women, at least, read and write English.

I've run across some FANTASTIC people at mail.ru, and it is slowly improving my russian. Frays my nerves on occasion (gotten into some wing-dinger debates there), but its a great way to spend an evening. mail.ru is the russian version of Yahoo!

Hope you sign up, look forward to seeing you there. GO FOR IT!

Hey thanks for the reply. I went to www.mail.ru, problem is, I can't read a thing. Not even a button to convert the page into english. I suppose you need some basic russian to use it.

brucen32--- You have a couple of options...

Try babel fish at alta vista... you can translate a page (usually)...

and there is a translation service (free, also) at translate.ru.

If you haven't already... at some point you will have to buy a english-russian dictionary. I have the Oxford version available in paperback that you can buy at a mall. For $8 or so its pretty good... many russian words won't add up exactly to those listed, but with a little patience, Oxford contains enough word variations that you will distill the basic premise of a sentence or word.

Try that... register and get chattin". Post your problems/challenges you face here... so others can learn from your experience. ---Brad///

Yeah, I second what Brad said.

The mail.ru chat rooms are great, but I often have to use my russian translation software (PROMT) to keep up with the conversations.

But yeah, try the english speaking rooms first, there are a few.

I also tend to go for the smaller rooms with about 6 to 8 people, ..I find they are more friendlier than those with 40 or so.

You can also create your own private chat room, and my Russian girl and I used this for a while until she figured out how to install MSN messenger.

Enjoy!
