Hi John,

I'm not familiar with Paint Shop Pro, but in general, you can use a JPEG (.jpg) format and select the compression level to help reduce the file size.

Also, you'll want to resize the photo to cut out anything extraneous. Sometimes it's not possible (such as a view shot, etc.) so the best you can do is to simply reduce image quality. In Microsoft Office, there's a program called "Microsoft Photo Editor" (I think it comes with NT, and ME, not sure about XP). There's an option to save JPEG images "for use on the web." It will automatically reduce image quality to minimum acceptable levels (though it's a bit too grainy for my tastes.)

Hope that helps.

Here is the easiest way to make your files fit on Russian Meeting Place's Rus. Photo Gallery using Paint Shop Pro. I use PSP7, but it should be almost identical regardless of whet version you use. Other programs will have similar commands, you will just need to figure out what you want.

In my example, I will take a 1600 x 1200 360kB large uncompressed .JPG file, and bring it down to <650 pixels wide and under 60kB.

1> Make a copy of your original photo. Never edit from your only original, for you will never be able to take that picture again.
2> Open the copy file, and make any edits, adjustments, cropping, etc., you wish to do.
3> Image >> Resize (also Ctrl+S will work).
4> Select Pixel Size radio button.
5> Make sure Resize type is set to Smart Size, and
6> Resize all layers and Maintain aspect ratio... are both checked.
7> Set Width to 640. (The hight will change automatically, to maintain the proper aspect ratio. Otherwise, the picture will be distorted).
8> Click OK
9> File >> Save As
10> Click Options
11> Click Run Optimizer
12> You will see two copies of your picture in the window. On the left, the uncompressed picture, to the right, the output picture. Under each you will see how large the fill is. Set the Compression value to: whatever number makes the output file just under 60kB. This makes the best looking picture that will be allowed to upload.
13> Click OK
14> Give your file a name and select it's location. I usually put it on the desktop, so I can find it when I upload. (You can name it the same as your copied file. DON'T name it the same as the original, or else you will lose all that great data the original has!). When you exit PSP, you will be asked do you want to save one or more files you worked with. Say NO, or else you will be overwriting a file that you don't want to overwrite!

You should now have a file you can upload, It seems like a lot of steps, but once you do it once or twice, you'll see it's not that much work...
