Russian DVD's with English subtitles?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Khashyar

I was wondering if anyone knew of specific good Russian films that has English subtitles??? I would like to rent some DVDs that have both Russian language with English subtitles so that Lena and I can both watch the film and share a Russian film and Russian culture together...

Also... does anyone remember the title of the Russian film that won the Academy Award for best picture a few years ago? Was it called "Burnt by the Sun"?

Thanks...

Khashyar

Yes, Burnt by the Sun won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. I found a copy in a used video store a few years ago. It's quite a film.

If you don't mind spending a little extra cash, you can order the DVDs on line, but that means you have to buy them of course. There are usually some films in Blockbuster with subtitles, but there's a good chance one or the both of you have seen them-- I've found "The Theif" (also nominated for an Academy Award not long ago), "Moscow Doesn't Believe in Tears" (won the Academy Award in the early 80s, I believe), Gorky Park, and a couple of others I can't remember now in Blockbuster before-- the Russian selection there, however, is usually three to four and that's it.

OOps-- I meant Luna Park, not Gorky Park (which is obviously in English)

Lots of russian music, movies with English subtitles (check their descriptions to see if there's any), books, etc...

Posted by: Khashyar

Thanks Nate, Vyesna and Ekaterina for your feedback about Russian films...

Yes, Nate, I look forward to seeing "Burnt by the Sun," but I could not find it in my video/ DVD store (which has quite a large foreign section)...

Vyesna... I also had the same experience with not seeing a lot of Russian films in the mainstream video stores... (I think that I did see "The Thief," though...) ...People who live in aras where there are many Russians can rent movies from Russian businesses. Fortunely, Los Angeles is one of those cities. But, in the one Russian store with videos that I visited, it didn't have Russian films that I would think of as classic Russian films...

Thanks Ekaterina for the link to the website.... I will look at the site and see what kinds of things they have...

If you have cable, you should subscribe to IFC. It has many foreign films with subtitles including Russian. IFC stands for International Film Channel. It's worth the $5 a month.

Posted by: Khashyar

That's great, Sherman...

Thanks form the recommendation...

(I don't subscribe to cable, because I know that I would spend more time watching t.v. if I did But I'm sure that many others are interested in the Russian film source...)

I think that watching Russian movies is a good way to better understand Russian people and culture.

Hi Khashyar
I would also recommend "Alexandr Nevsky" It is a very old Russian (Soviet) film, black and white, but got a lot of praise for its famous battle scene on a frozen lake which during that time was quite an accomplishment to do a large battle scene. I was able to find one at a local Blockbuster and rent it. Though that was the only Russian movie in the whole store.
Take care and hope you and Lena are enjoying Washington DC.

Thank you, DAX, for the movie recommendation and the good wishes...

Lena and I are coming back to L.A. late Wednesday night, and we are having a pretty good time here.

I posted a few photos in the photo galleries if you would like to see them... (and I am going to see if there are some more photos that I can post later today as well)....

I am going to try to post a trip report about our Washington visit with my parents.

Anyone know where I can find a DVD or Video version with subtitles or dubbed, "The Service Love Affair"?
I have searched the internet and no luck. Any help is appreciated.

I didn't find it at this website, but perhaps if you know the director, you can search for it that way. This online video store is located in Brighton Beach, New York and has a pretty large Russian video selection (from what I've seen online.)

Russian DVD store

Good luck!

I recently added RTI to our home. It has 2 channels of Russian television for $29 a month. One news and one movie channel. Ellen loves it.

I've just finished working on the page about Armen Dzhigarkhanyan.
I knew that he was in a lot of movies,
but I had no idea how hard this actor worked,
until recently constantly.
He acted in over 200 films & plays, that's got to be some kind of record.
I can't imagine how he managed to find time to get married.
And He also founded a theater, and used to teach as well.

I also recently made a page about Nikolai Karachentsov.
And there are 23 other really good actors & actresses on my actors page.

Hi follks.....
Just been given DVD titled 'Russian Ark'
by Alexander Sokurov.
Russian documentry type of film in Winter Palace.
96 minute DVD of a jouney through 300 years of Russian history.
Has optional English or french sub titles and audio is in Russian.
Ebert & Roeper give this film "Two Thumps Up."
My personal observation would be less enthusiastic.
I found it slow and in some parts, difficult to follow.
Overall, the costumery is great and the tour through the Palace very interesting. Would I buy it knowing what I know now, probb'ly not.
Would I buy it so my Asiya could watch it here? Too right !

For someone who likes SF and English drama this was not my idea of 96 minutes of fun, but don't let me put you off.
Rent it and see for yourself.

Question...................
I am off to Volgorad on the 29th, will this DVD disc play on a new Russian DVD player there ? Seems to me that a Lazer reader is a Lazer reader, only difference would be the frequency of the house current running the clockwork..or am I total wrong ?

My Video camcorder played back straight into the TV set there with a 'S' patch cord and we watched the film I had made of my shop and locality here in USA.

Brandon,

That movie is definitely "love it or hate it". If one is used to American movies like "Terminator", you'll hate this film. If one can see the brilliance of a movie that was shot in one take (a cinematic first), this movie will blow you away.

I loved it! I have friends that hated it. Either way it is a must see for a Russia lover.

I have a few Russian movies with English subtitles that I would like to trade. If you have some movies to trade, drop me a note at shermanmurdock at comcast dot net.

Slightly of topic, I've recently made a page that lists English language movies that are based on Russian books. So far I have 26 titles listed. And I'm trying find to more that are available in America. The ones I really liked are: Lolita, Onegin & Doctor Zhivago.
Would appreciate any help with the ones I've missed.

You can rent or buy 'em Ruski DVD's at the St. Petersburg Store in West Hollywood on Santa Monica Blvd. @ Genese (East of Fairfax).

It's right by the New York Deli.

The owners name is Alex and he's from St. Petersburg. He is also currently selling DVD players for a little over $80.

I recently borrowed the Ruski version of War & Peace for $8 per week.

I forget the title... "Mila's Driver" or something like that. It was very good and very tragic. Olga has the Russian DVD (PAL format) and I watched it on my notebook computer. I use "Region Free DVD" which is software that bypasses the regional encoding.

I'll look into Emetsky's tip for video store. I'm sure Olga will be thrilled to be able to watch movies in Russian!

Did you mean Водитель для Веры / A Driver for Vera ?

And for Russian Movies there is more then one store,
and my site is the reference directory for Russian Films in US,
with links to titles from 12 different stores.

That's it!!! It actually was pretty good. I wouldn't mind adding it to my video library!

I picked up "A driver for vera" on DVD when I was in Moscow in October 2004. It does even have English subtitles. But it seems to me that things like different subtitles and sound/picture options varies a lot among the different releases.

I've recently watched Slave of love, this time around it made much bigger impression upon me. The film is set in a southern Russian town during civil war after revolution. The story revolves around prominent silent film actress, who slowly learns what really is going on around her.
The movie made me think of how so many people, like the heroine of the feature, do live in blissful world of ignorance. But what I really enjoyed is how director Nikita Mikhalkov kept the overtone of the film very lyrical almost all the way through, and in the end to the contrast of what was happening.
Have any of you seen any of his other works? And did you like it?

the online company Netflix does rent a solid collection of Russian films that are often dubbed both ways. You can hear it in English or Russian with English or Russian subtitles. They mail the DVD to you, and you just put it back in the mail when done. The postage is already on it.
My favorites
"Moscow Does not Believe in Tears"
and
"East- West"

I joined Netflix a few years ago and have not been in Blockbuster since.

Yes, it was Burnt by the Sun, great movie
I am trying to get dvd english sub titles in Sydney Australia of "the Return"

I didn't get "Burnt By The Sun". Everyone raved about that film, and I was underwhelmed. I think there are some far more interesting Russian films than that one.

Posted by: Keith In Kodiak

As Conner pointed out, Blockbuster has a very good selection of Russian films. You join their mailing deal and they send you movies you've selected from your list. Keep them as long as you want and then send them back (in the prepaid envelope they give you) and they send the next ones on the list.

It's a very good deal, cheaper than renting from a store.

Three that I particularly like are:

Come and See. A Belarussian film about a boy in the Great Patriotic War. The story is wonderful, and the cinematography approaches the magical.

At Home Among Strangers. An action film about the Russian civil war. Reds, Whites and Bandits are all trying to get their hands on some Czarist gold. This is shot in the style of an American Western - The Cossacks play the cavalry, the Bandits and Whites play the Indians and outlaws. This is as good as any American Western ever done.

Cuckoo. Two wounded soldiers, one Finnish and one Russian, are thrown together with a Lapp woman during the war. They are dependent on the woman to feed and care for them, and must learn to tolerate and trust each other.
There is great drama here, as well as high comedy!

Solaris, the original version, is in a Criterion Collection. It is probably the most beautifully shot Russian movie, similar to Kubrick's 2001 film.

Now if I can find a copy of "Little Vera!"

I don't know about the states, but in my town (Montreal) lots of videorental places carry a big collection of Russian movies with subtitles. I have rented The Thief in one of those places.
