'Smoke' is the generic meterological term for an overcast condition that is caused by particulate matter. Or in layman's terms, there's dust and/or pollution absorbing the sun's rays. 'Haze', when used in a weather forecast, is usually just water vapor.

Sources of smoke can include smog, industrial pollution, fire and/or volcanic ash.

Certainly isn't Fiji...

Visibility is fine for about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile. It's not terrible and you'll get used to the brown haze in the air. There's not particular associated smell, so don't worry too much about it. (You'll be too busy trying to avoid getting run-over by the motorists anyway.)

Have fun in Tashkent! There's plenty of night clubs around for dancing and it's a very safe city! Make sure to try the traditional Plov (rice) and Sashlik (shish-kebabs).
