I just bought a 5-string banjo...

Hi Everyone,

I play the guitar, and I've been thinking about buying a banjo for some time.

I just bought a 5-string banjo today.

When Lena saw and heard it, she told me: "I don't think they have that in Russia."

I told Lena that she is right, that it is an old American instrument. I did a little research online, and found that the earliest banjo-like instruments are from Africa, but that an American minstrel performer invented the 5-string banjo.

I'm going to have fun applying my guitar experience to the banjo.

I just like the sound....

Yeh, Rick, I love the sound of the banjo.

Ever since I brought the banjo home today, I have been getting acquainted with how the banjo feels (compared to my guitar), as well as practicing some finger "rolls," which is the fast picking sound that you hear.

I'm amazed at how some of the well-known banjo players can pick the banjo so fast.

Khashyar- The banjo is a happy musical instrument. I just hope we don't see you later in a remake of Deliverance!

I had always thought the banjo was a descendant of the koto from japan.
learn something everyday!
My son joined his middle school band because.....he wanted to learn how to play the banjo. Broke his heart when he found out there weren't banjos in a band!! He did learn the trumpet pretty well though.

I read that there also is a banjo-like instrument in Asia.

But my understanding is the instrument that became popular in America was brought to the U.S. by the African slaves, and later adapted into the 5 string banjo by a white blackface minstrel singer in the early to mid 1800s.

Joe, he can always learn to play the banjo on his own, or through private lessons

Lena is right. When I saw the documentary on the Russian bluegrass group "Bering Straight", the lead guitarist played the banjo for his audition at the Moscow Music Conservatory and the looks he received were priceless. Walking through the streets carrying that case turned heads.

Moscow needs more banjos!

Suppose we'll have to re=write the opening lines of the Bryan Adams song, Summer of '69 now then!!

"I bought my first real 5 string"

He hehe. Nice one Khashyar, hope you enjoy!

I'm having fun with it now

Actually, all the time that I spent on guitar os helping me.

Maybe I'll bring the banjo to Belarus on my next trip and see what happens (that is, if we are allowed to travel there as a result of U.S. and EU sanctions against Belarus).
