Can a Russian doctor work in the UK & Australia?

Hi All,

I suppose I am one of the lucky ones, I have a wonderful relationship with a beautiful lady based in Nizhniy Novgorod. We are both serious, professional people and are thinking hard about making the next step.

The biggest concern is Natalia's ability to live and work in the UK and later Australia as a Russian qualified doctor. On paper it's possible as she is entitled to take the necessary BMA exams to enable her to practice in the UK. But I have heard different stories about how realistic this may be and the difficulties she may face in finding work, even as a locum.

Has anybody experienced or know of a similar situation? Is it more realistic to expect Natalia not to be able to pursue her medical career in the UK and to consider an alternative? The issue isn't wholly financial, I am able to support her for a couple of years until we become more established. However long term we are both looking to work and raise a family in either the UK or Australia (I am a dual citizen) with one person working full time and the other part time.

Any thoughts and observations are welcome,

Thanks

SteveL

Hi,

It is realistic she can continue her career. One of my very good friends is a psychiatrist (should I admit that) from the old East Germany, who did his medical training in Moscow, then came to the UK. I don't know all the practicalities that he had to go through, and ultimately being German may have eased the path, but he came he with Russian medical qualifications and is now successfully practising with a nice house and a whopping big salary. So it can be done.

ATM I would be very careful with bringing in anyone who is a doctor and wants to works as one in any part of Australia. We have had a few now infamous cases in Australia in the last few years, and another broke only last week in the town I live in, where a foriegn born and trained doctor with full top class credentials from overseas has stuffed up resulting in the known deaths of patients and the possibility, in the current case, of patients having cancer and not even knowing beicause the doctor in question didn't conduct the appropriate test or even do the right test properly.

I am not saying your lovely lady is in this class of people at all but I am saying there is currently a deep suspicion of the quality of the training and calibre of foriegn trained doctors in this country.

If you choose to take this path in Australia I would make sure that she has an understanding of the situation we now have in this country. And yes we need doctors badly as there are not enough.

Hope this helps.

hi oz & guys
natasha,s mate who is a doctor(3am house calls in the snow lol)is currently going through the process, she has to sit several exams & do some time in a hospital here as an inturn & then sit more exams.
she says australian stds are very hard but she is hopeing to get here.
oz is right there have been a few instances with doctors from overseas,by far the worst being patel or doctor death.
so saying that i had the pleasure of being under (no pun intended) a lovely russian doctor here not so long ago.
our aussie docs are often incouraged o/s by much better wages than our tightarse gov pays here, like wise our nurses, uk is big culprit

There was a news report only the other day about a doctor who worked in my local base hospital, then he went to The South Coast of NSW and they found he kept stuffing up, it has just come out that my local base hospital also new he was stuffing up but they never sacked or even reported him. Apparently he is trying to get into Queenslands health system but Peter Beaty said NO when he heard about the number of people he has possibly killed by negligence in the last 10 years.

Bob, good docs and nurses are like anything else in this country, under valued and under paid. After I have finished with Uni I'll be on a working holiday myself I think.

Hello,
It is possible to legalise your russian gf/wife's diploma here but from what I've heard it is rather difficult. The first thing she has to start with is to take IELTS exam(International English Language Test System ,google it for more information) .
Actually, there is a forum for Russians in the UK and some people share their experience about the procedure of becoming a doctor in the UK.There is a shortage of doctors and nurses here but for some reasons the authorities make it too complicated for overseas doctors .So if she has access to the internet she can ask people directly:www.rupoint.co.uk
