Hi!! I've been lurking here for awhile, and this site is very interesting. Im a twenty-seven year old female from the midwest in the U.S. I was wondering if there is anybody on here who has learned to speak the Russian language by taking a course, on audio tapes, or having a internet friend teach them. Is it difficult? How long did it take? I'm asking because I'm very interested in learning Russian myself. What is the best way to learn? Thanks in advance.

I'm, probably, not the best person to answer your question since I'm a native Russian speaker, but I've learned a foreign language at some point, and the best way to do that, in my opinion, with a teacher who are a native speaker. The full submergence works very well too, but it might not be possible in many cases.

You can start with any Russian language course at a community college. It will give you a basic foundation. Then continue on your own with books and audio tapes. it is very helpful to have a Russian speaking friend(s) you can talk to... How long it is going to take to learn the language? Depends on many things, including your goals (what do you want to learn the language for; to what extend you want to know it), your discipline, the time you can devote to studies, etc.. essencially, the learning never stops.

Hello Justlooking,welcome to the RMP.
I have been trying to learn off and on for a few years now with books, tapes and computer programs.
I was doing all right, but wish I would have gave 100% from the begining.

I have now got a tutor that I go to once every two weeks, and have found a big differance in how much I am learning.
The books and tapes don't all ways answer all questions.

It is better to have someone tell you you are not saying it right, but books and tapes can still do the job,may not be quite perfect.

Hi JustLooking. I'm ina similar situation to you, I have bought some old 45s from my Uni student bookshop and some tapes from a local bookshop as well. But my best internet find is this link as it has sound files you can download. Be sure to download the MP3 files not the Real Audio files.

Heres the link, if you have any other questions regarding links PM me if you want. http://www.gwu.edu/~slavic/golosa/

I hope I can post this link if not feel free to remove it and JustLooking and anyone else can PM me for the info.

Welcome! The Russian language forum has lots of useful information to answer that question. But me personally, I started with the Pimsleur CDs and then went to software called "Rosetta Stone". Then...off to the local university.

Good luck.

I would agree with those who recommend learning with a native speaker and, even more important, a professional teacher. People learn from people! Learning a language without talking is like learning to drive without driving.

I did some research on this, and I think the Rosetta Stone software might be the best thing for me right now. I called the community colleges in my area, and unfortunately, they only offer Spanish, Italian and French classes. Hopefully, I can find a private tutor later on after the software has done all it can for me.
