Brucey here. Just been persuing the russian language forums and I'll be honest with you, I can't read a bloody thing. The whole thing looks like greek to me. Half the letters aren't even letters and the ones that are letters are back to front, like "R". Any tips on how to decipher that mumbo jumbo? Any chance of getting everyone to write the letters the right way round?

Hiya Bruce,

Russian is a beautiful language. Although at first it can look a little confusing, it becomes so much more meaningful once you have learnt the Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet. Each of those little symbols has a sound, just like the English alphabet, but they have more letters (33).

For example, the word привет (п = 'p', р = 'r', и = 'i 'or 'ee', в = 'v', е = 'ye', т = 't')

So we have the word 'privyet' ..(often written in English as 'privet') ..which simply means "Hello" or "Hi!".

easy peasy ...!

but if you can't be bothered learning the Cyrillic alphabet (takes 1 to 2 weeks of practice) then you can browse Russian pages using this site:

Good luck mate!

Strewth! It's like they took the alphabet and deliberately got it all wrong. n=p, p=r, back to front N=i... Wouldn't it be easier just to make it all the same?? And 33 letters!? It took me till 5th grade to master the 25 we have in English! How the hell did you get all that, mate? You must be a bloody geniuos!

hey Brucey. I think that is a great idea to standardize the alphabet between the two languages. Why don't you start it and write President Bush and tell him to change our alphabet to theirs.

If you think it is bad now wait till you try learning a bit of it. They only have to learn to say Hi to say hello to somone. We have to learn to say zdrastvooytye. Not only that but if you run into the same person a second time you can only say hello that way once a day you then you have to learn to say Priviet. We can say Hi a dozen times to the same person.
