Working in Russia for English speakers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mistermopar

Hi everyone,I have read through the threads already and am still looking for info about working in Russia.

I have been concidering taking an ESL course (teaching English).
I am sure there are other jobs a English speaker could do.

Any ideas or support on this would be great.

Thanks

Randy

I researched this a while ago, for ideas try the english language newspapers moscow times and the spb times.

Lena told me that in Belarus, colleges and Universities would love to employ a native English speaker as an English teacher. You need to contact the Universities and colleges directly.

Also, you can supplement your teaching income by giving private English lessons.

You can probably make enough money as a teacher to pay all of your bills in Belarus, but don't expect to make a lot of money and come back to Canada a rich man

Try dabbling in real estate...

Posted by: Khashyar

Real estate would be o.k., but the taxes are very high if you are purchasing property as a non-Russian.

Khashyar

Posted by: mistermopar

Thanks Lep,Khashyar and yoda.
Every little bit helps me.

I am not looking to become rich,it isn't happening in Canada so I don't expect it to happen over sea's.I am one of those people no matter what I do I will be working all my life.LOL

Belarus sounds good, but since my new friend is in Volzhsky I was hoping for some thing closer to her incase it works out.But I am open minded and not going to limit my self to much at first.

On Armenian radio there came a question from abroad:
'Is it true that in the Russia the pay does not correspond to the work?

'Incorrect. It corresponds quite well.
They pretend to pay and we pretend to work.'

Posted by: mistermopar

Ah good news,I have recieved a reply from the Chair of foreign languages at an academy in Volgograd asking for my resume and wanting to know when we can meet.
Guess I better take that course.

He mentioned that salaries are low and hoped that I was not afraid of challenges.

I asked my friend about the place and she knows of it but not alot about it.

I will keep yous posted as things happen or don't happen.

Randy

Posted by: Leprechaun

That's brilliant, hope it all works out for you, you can be our Canadian correspondent in Volgograd!!!

Fingers crossed.

Posted by: mistermopar

Thanks Lep,it would be great,I just need a change.

Randy

Posted by: yodaamnot

A change is a good as a holiday...

Let's us know what happens.

Posted by: mistermopar

Hey yodaamnot,I will be sure to keep yous posted,I just hope I don't back out.
I really am in need of some change,I think the hardest for me to give up to do this is my racing.

Hiya Randy,

I was looking into the possibility of working in Russia for a year as well, to truly experience the culture.

My girl said there is a foreign (English speaking) university in Moscow that sometimes looks for new teachers - possibly it might provide a higher salary than an institute in the smaller cities.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll get more details. I'm thinking about applying to lecture there if I really enjoy my time in Russia. Would be great to have a fellow RMP member there with me!

Regards, scotch.

Posted by: mistermopar

Hi Scotch, thanks.Pm me the info, never know,if things don't work out were I'm looking maybe I will head to Moscow.

Randy

A small update...I will be leaving Tuesday April the 4th to take my ESL course
in the Capital of Canada,Ottawa.
I am very excited right now about this.

It is a week long course and then there is 40 hours to do at home over the computer.
Once that is done I can start sending out my resume.

Randy

Posted by: Mr.Humble

Hola...good luck with that Randy....now I need to find me a school to properly learn me russian....ideally to bring back me a private tutor from Moscow would be the thing....but still...hehe

Tell us how the course goes

Mr.H

Posted by: Leprechaun

Will you be giving a few free classes as part of the course?
I read that some schools prefer the standard of 100 hours learning and a bit of experience teaching. I looked into doing this before also.

I fact, I would like to go back to school again and maybe become a teacher, Ive taught drama to kids for years but there's no work here in that until it becomes part of the curriculum, English would be my way in.

Why not aim high???? You are far too smart and have too much going for you to just be a common man on an assembly line. (not that there's anything wrong with that) When you aim high, even if you fall short, you still accomplish much.

Russia is a wide open economy and there are lots of people making lots of money over there. Why not you?

Posted by: mistermopar

Well last night was my first class, more introductions and gettting a feel for everything. But also a little learning and some home work.
I am finding it very fun and exciting.

I am staying at a youth hostel, what an experiance it is.It is fun and I have met many people visiting Canada from all over, ahh but none from Russia.
Some are from Germany,Switserland,China and on and on.

I will try to get on this computer again soon.

Randy

None from downunder?

Thats funny Lep..LOL,but not entiarly true. There is a young couple staying here from Oz.

The course seems to be getting more intense. So much to cram into my brain.

Randy

Posted by: AkMike

Keep at it Randy. I think you'll enjoy the experience. Not only that just think of the hot co-eds that may want some extra credit! That's better than the teacher getting an apple!!

Hi Randy,

Good luck with your adventure.......but that sounds like a very short course!!

Ade

Posted by: mistermopar

Hi everyone, thanks for the support and replies.

Well I am now done the inclass course,and.....yes,I got my certificate..YAYYY
I still have to do the grammer part and send it in and then put together 12 class lessons, each having to recap the day before lesson. That should be interesting.
The grammer and 12 class lessons are a minimum of 40 hours, wow.

I learned so much, and it is hard to remember everything,so I will also be rereading the manual that we got, maybe twice.

I would also like to start as soon asap to get my resume ready.

I think I had mentioned it some where that I have already recieved an email from a University/academy in Volgograd looking for my resume. It is the city I want to go to.

Well I will keep yous posted on what is happening as I progress.

I don't wanna pish on your party mate but it's 'grammar', not 'grammer'!!

Also I should remember for myself McKean's Law, which states that anyone correcting someone's grammar or spelling invariably makes a similar error himself.

So I'm going over this post with a fine toothed comb.

And I carn't found any mishtakes atall.

Wanderer

Posted by: mistermopar

Wanderer, thank you for bring that to my attention.Ahhh...my spelling is not 100% perfect, sometimes I catch my mistakes sometime I don't.
Lucky for me I don't have to be a perfect speller to teach an ESL class,I teach them how to speak and pronounce English and I have about 38 years experiance speaking English...LOL

Randy

Posted by: Leprechaun

LOL wanderer, I was wondering when someone was going to point out the errors, I used google spell check on the post LOL, I wonder how many others were as paranoid as me!!!!

Class.

Mister, can I have a gold star?

Posted by: mistermopar

One gold star for Lep...LOL

PS, Sorry mistermoparman, it's 'experience' not 'experiance'....God I really wish I wasn't so perfect, but I can't help it!

v podval opyat', shas! arrgghhhh...........

If you use Internet Explorer (IE) like I do, this little application keeps you from making too many spelling mistakes. Works great in this forum.

Randy have you got an update for us in your at home part of the course or any contacts you have made in Russia since your last post?

Posted by: mistermopar

Hi OzGuyLooking,I have just finished the grammer of the at home part of the course.I mailed it in on Thurs.I think I did quite well,I will let you know when I get my mark back.

I am now starting the next part and decided on taking the buisness English.
It will be a little harder than the child,or youth English but I think it will be good to learn.

I have not got any other contacts at this time.I think I will have to sit down soon and start my resume.

At the same time,I have still been working at my regular job and trying to do things around the house to make it as perfect as possibale to sell.

Randy

Posted by: OzGuyLooking

Thanks Randy for your reply. I plan to do a course next year and also like the idea of contacting employers like the unis directly. I have spoken to my unis here in Aus and they will even help out getting things organised, thus my interest in your situation. Thanks again mate.

Posted by: mistermopar

well I got my mark back from my grammar test......and yes I got 96%.YAYYY

I am now starting my Business English, not sure how long it will take but I hope it is not to long.

Congrats Randy, well done, English Grammaer isn't easy.

Hi Randy
How's the course going? Have you started sending out the resume yet?
I start a CELTA training course for 4-weeks full time on Monday - hoping to get back to Russia asap afterwards. If you're interested in, visit www.visarus.co.uk - they have a full list of Russian English Schools. Also, check-out tefl.com!!
Bing

Posted by: mistermopar

Hey Bing, its going good,a little slow with the business English part.I am spreading my self to thin with every thing I am doing.

Trying to get the house ready to put up for sale, going to Russian tutor, work and the English course...wow,my days are full.

Congrats on the up comming CELTA course,I hope you do very well with it.

Thanks for the sites I will check them out later to night.

Keep me up dated on how your course is going.

Randy

Posted by: bingism

Hi Randy.... just to say I passed the course - it's seriously tough! I reckon you're doing the best option by taking your time and not cramming it all into 4-weeks! My brain still hurts and I'll be teaching for real in less than a week. Hope your plans are still on track!

Posted by: mistermopar

Congratulations Bing on finishing your course.
It is a lot to do in 4 weeks, and I know what you meen by your head hurts.
Where will you be teaching?

I wish I was still on track,I have bitten off more than I can chew. But I am still trying to get everything compleated, house ,course and everything else.

I think I am going to have to move the date of me moving over seas to a later date.Very dissapointing.

I decided to take this past weekend off from everything and went drag racing, wow,a lot of stress dissapeared.

I am very interested in how you are making out with everything, please keep me up to date.

Randy

I like the name I had a plyumouth Barracuda 1969 and quite a few other mopars. Hey listen I live in Moscow Russia. I have an English school and I know many others here. YOu can make good money here, but there are many Russian schools that will steal you blind. I recommend (edited by cheb) and myu own school (edited by cheb) If you are in Moscow or are coming to visit, send an email. Look at the sites. If you talk with the webmaster at ELC, her name is Anya and she is a friend of mine. My name is Chaz. Just tell her I referred you.
