Just a change from our recent subject, in this forum. Anyone into football/soccer? What do you think Arsenal's chances are of beating Real Madrid tonight? Even though I am a fan of Arsenal FC, I cannot help but think it will be a toughie I hope some of the youth really show their potential tonight.

C'mon lads!!!!!!!! Tonight is the night to stand up and be counted

Hi

I have the last 20 years, always disliked Arsenal. Not soo much for the team, name and so on, just simply because in 90% of the situation where I have put money at teh team, they fail. Either by loosing, even I have put money at a win and a tie or loose when I have them for favorite.

I had'nt put money at them for years until the neginning of february and what happen. They did'nt win.

So for me, Arsenal is THAT great time, I can't win with.

Posted by: zaniac

Jutman - Please don't bet on Arsenal getting through to the next round of Champions League, lol. I never bet on Arsenal as I have tried on two occassions and completely got it wrong.

I was saying to a friend at work the other day, that it seems like at this stage of the current season you can compare Arsenal to the Liverpool of the previous season. Liverpool were not doing well in the domestic league, but they surpassed expectations in the Champions League and won it.

Now at this stage Arsenal are doing poorly at domestic level, but at European level, they are having one of their best european campaigns under Arsene Wenger. Who would have thought before the away game that Arsenal would come back to Highbury with a 1-0 aggregate lead? I think many Arsenal fans would have taken 0-0. I think would have.

Posted by: JamesB

Im a qpr fan but i support any British team in Europe so go you gunners

Posted by: zaniac

When I was about 16, I went with my mate and his parents to Loftus Road, to see an Arsenal vs QPR league game. My mate's mum is a true QPR fan and got us tickets for the match in the home stand. I can't remember the score, but I think when Arsenal scored I was the probably the only person in the stand to raise his arms in joy I quickly realised what I was doing and kept a low profile for the rest of the match.

I remember, before the match we saw a guy from the TV drama 'The Bill'. Watching it the other day I see he is still in it, after all these years (about 10 years).

Posted by: JamesB

Well we did give you David Seaman.

Im a huge college football fan.... GO BUCKS! Afer all we all know, that soccer is played with a round ball and FOOTBALL is played by very large men who like to hit.

Posted by: Ade

Hi Rob,

Football is played with a ball and, well, feet.....unlike American Football (which I like very much) which isn't

Rob

Why is it called Football when the foot is used very little if ever??? and why did they call it football when the real football (English style) had been played in England since the Thirteenth century, I think that was a few years before you guys started to play american football

The first rules for proper football were drawn up in 1863, correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that was a little ahead of you guys also!!

Chris

I guess they called it football for the same reason they call rounders, baseball.
Maybe Rugby was too much of a mans game, so they came up with all that padding.

Your description of football sounds very similar to the way the major foreign european football teams play. They like to hit, kick, stamp and basically foul in competitions - such as the champions league.

Posted by: zaniac

Quarter-final of European Champions League cup.

I'm going for an Arsenal 2-1 win prediction. I think the players will have had plenty of rest thanks to the weekend weather. Are we the Liverpool of last season???

Posted by: RBS

Does Arsenhole really think they have any chance? If you take this view you make yourself a target for mockery. Just admit that St. Entienne is where it's at. Allez les verts! C'est nous les plus forts! Gib

Posted by: zaniac

Lol Saint who? (only joking!) Well Villareal shouldn't be that hard, me thinks

come play league with men who play all of the game, no padding,no defence side,no attack side & when they hit you stay hit
you have a team i think called the patriots, who tried there hearts out& they will get better, ask them to rate the games lol

hi john
we had a gridiron team visit out here a few years back, they were offered a game of footy
aussies told them they could wear all there padding lol. they refused reckoned it was to dangerous.

Posted by: Jutman

Don't under estimate Villareal. Its a 3rd year they go fare. The last 2 year from Intertoto qualification to semi in Uefa cup. So they have stabilized in the top of Primera and has a got international experience. Of course still a kid compared to Arsenal and for some reason english teams stands well to spanish, so yes. 60-40% to the gunners, but a red card, bad ref or just a mistake can easily change that picture.

Could there be a more contentios issue than Football? Everyone has a different version of what football is....
Some football doesn't even contain many feet contacting the pig skin!
For what it's worth though, Essendon could whip arsenals butt any time....

LOL!
Still... Go the Mighty Bombers!!

Posted by: firemansam

See the Bombers fly up, up!
To win the premiership flag.
Our boys who play this grand old game,
Are always striving for glory and fame!
See the bombers fly up, up,
The other teams they don't fear,
They all try their best,
But they can't get near,
As the bombers fly up!

Posted by: zaniac

On reflection, it's going to be a tricky game, but I still think we get the result we need.

Posted by: zaniac

Oh such glory!!!!!!!!

Now 4 the final. I'll get my Queen album on standby ready for the 90th minute when I'm sure we be looking at victory

Posted by: Jutman

My prediction was not so bad !!! Okay, Villareal missed their penalty, but if not, who know what would have happen in OT. And the game itself, showed (for me) two teams who wanted to play.

In the Finals, The gunners must be the underdog. Of course again with a fair chance like 40% But 2 spanish team in a row, No. I don't believe so.

Posted by: Geeaytch

....2 spanish teams in a row....and dont forget Arsenal knocked Real Madrid out too. I'm backing Barca...not cos i like them (AC was my pick....can somebody explain to me why Shevchenko's goal was disallowed!!) but because i want to see Tottenham in the Champions Leauge. Apparently if they get Champions League action, they're gonna go in and make an offer for Anelka, or something like that....and i'm a HUGE Anelka fan...soooo....yeah, Go Barca! First thing's first though...they first have to secure 4th place this weekend.*keeps fingers crossed*

Posted by: Chrismc

Spain, Italy and England have all had teams that have won the Champions League 10 times in total, so although I am a Liverpool fan I want Arsenal to win for Englands sake and make it 11and keep one ahead.

Oh and remember England werre banned form the competition for many years!!! good job we have Liverpool with their five trophies to keep us in the race!!

Posted by: firemansam

C'arn the Bombers!!

Posted by: zaniac

Jutman - I think had Riquelme (not sure on spelling) had scored his penalty, Arsenal probably would have only qualified through winning penalties, providing they made it through the extra-time stage with the aggregate level. I could not see Arsenal scoring during the match. If I remember rightly we didn't have a single shot on goal. That game did not reflect our recent performances in europe, however we have picked up our game in the Premier League, so there is hope. Oh-no we've got Wigan tomorrow

Geeaytch - Anelka is ok, but for me he is over-rated a little. I think we got a brilliant deal when we sold him for over Ј20,000,000. We poached him of Paris Saint-Germain, giving no more than Ј500,000 compensation, so for us he proved to be a good investment. Generally though Anelka is very unloyal from what I remember, I think he is more interested in milking clubs for their money. Then leave as soon as the team start to under perform. I'd be amazed if Martin Jol tries to sign Anelka, I think he could attract better players. If I remember correctly, Martin Jol (reportedly) wants to sign Hatem Ben Arfa from Lyon (I think).

Chrismc - I'm thinking back to the Arsenal's last previous european final against Parma. It only takes one goal for us to win it. I just hope nobody picks up injuries tomorrow.

firemansam - go bombers!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Chrismc

Zaniac..I agree with you about Anelka, far too highly overated for me, I think Arsenal had the best out of him, Liverpool and Man City just wasted their money I'm afraid and I don't think he has any loyalty at all, he is in it for the money only, when theteam starts loosing, he bails out as quick as possible. Like you said, Spurs could sign far better players than him.

I am not a big lover of Arsenal, but you cannot help admire the way they play when they are on song and Henry is something else. However I always support British, teams in Europe so come on Arsenal and although normally I would want Wigan to win tommorrow, I have a bet on that Arsenal will beat Wigan....so come on you Gooners !!

If Everton also beat WBA I'm in the money!!!

Chris

Posted by: zaniac

Wigan knocked arsenal out of one of the cups and I think they either beat or drew with us in the league.

Posted by: Chrismc

Yes but look at current form, Wigan have gone downhill and Arsenal have got stronger and stronger, similar to Liverpool last season when they were poor in the League but won the European Cup and just the same they finished 4th in the league just as Arsenal probably will. So Arsenal have to win it to get back in next season. If they play like they can, they will do it. If they play like they did in their last European game they will get hammered.

You'll get a run for your money next season. Maybe not from Arsenal (though it would be nice), but from one of the others. Do you think they will keep Jose if he fails to win the Champions League next season?

I think to be fair tonight, Wenger should play Flamini at left back, as he has played for us in that position. Though I agree Campbell should pair up with Toure, as Senderos has just come back from injury.

Go-boys-go!!!!!!!!

Posted by: JamesB

Im thinking that as Chelsea have now got Ballack and are buying a Brazilian forward i dont see much competition next season.Go on you Blues!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: zaniac

Jeremy Alialidare - that is all I'm going to say, lol.

Come on I know your jealous

I think Arsenal should bank the money on Cole after this, as well as Lauren, Pires and Cygan (potentially the best defender ever to come out of France ).

Posted by: Jutman

what ?

No what IF, the keeper was'nt send away.

Its difficult to predict next years CL now. The groups, the day, the opponents tehy will meet. Football is a random game, where its not alway the best team who win.

Posted by: zaniac

I think that can be applied to this season's competition

Arsenal should have won it, me thinks, lol.
