Visiting my old home town.....first time to the Geary area....and some changes

Looks like there is some kind of micro-mall at the former location of the Russian Bear......mostly artwork and other Asian goods.

At the old "Little Russia" location, there is now a Chinese dessert place.

There is now a pharmacy where the old "Odessa" deli was.

But, in place of the old pharmacy on 18th and Geary, there is now the "Europa-Plus" market. This used to be next to the beach but has now moved about 20 blocks closer to the city.

The "Europa-plus" carries a great selection of Russian and other ethnic foods as before. Much easier to navigate than the old store.

Thanks for the info. Now that I'm in the area, I need to get myself on the BART and check out the "big city"

Jill, are in you in the East Bay, South Bay, or Peninsula? Did you go to the Russian Festival last week?

I *think* East Bay (I'm still new, so I don't have all the geography down yet ). I'm on the Pittsburg/Bay Point line, if that helps.

I didn't make to the festival, unfortunately--actually I didn't even know about it until you posted. We're still not too mobile here as we haven't gotten car insurance yet (and don't want to drag the baby that far on the BART). Hopefully soon we'll be able to get out more

In the East Bay...There is a new Russian Restaurant/market that opened a little while ago in Castro Valley. It is the Europian Market off of Redwood Road, just south of Castro Valley Blvd....Might be worth checking out if you don't want to go to Geary St.

Patrick, thanks for mentioning it. My sister lives in Hayward(next town over), so will have to check it out next time I come in to visit.

Well Jill!!! This is the 1st confirmation, other than the change of LOCATION on your profile, that confirms you and the family are in the U-S.

I would say Welcome Home... but you are in California... and its been, what, 11 years of any continuous time in America. Is this home for you?

Is everything weird in some way?

We often hear about the reaction of FSU women when they arrive in America, and I admit, I am wondering how all of this seems to an FSU guy. Hope you'll open a thread and share the impressions Igor has (those you think are appropriate to share).

Glad your back in the union!!!
