Bread Juice

When I was in Kherson Ukraine, people everywhere were drinking Bread Juice. There were vending machines and people kept asking me to try it. I politely refused. It was the color of tea. Can anyone tell me what this is made of and what it tastes like?

Do you mean 'KVAS' ??

There is a type of beer that is made out of fermented bread. Is that it? Was your "bread juice" an alcoholic beverage?

I am sure he is talking about kvas. It is a fermented drink made from bread. It is lightly alcoholic. Taste can remind you of a very light root beer (closest thing to compare taste to for an American palate).

I think it was kvas also... I did not know what this was when I first saw the vendors for it all over the place in downtown Odessa and also in Yalta.... The containers they had it in over there looked like to me what the road crews use here in the US to repair the road with but it does taste good.... like a soda of some type I suppose rootbeer etc... But I did not know there was alcohol in it I would have had more... My Tetyana says she thinks it taste like sweet water.... and I think that fits the description of lots of drinks over there...

Uhmm.

As a Dane I must say, Kvas and Rootbeer both taste, - not good.

My view was, they drink as it was lemonade. About the alcohol, its low I think. Because children drink it to.

Poor foreigners...

So you dont like kvas... poor you... Kvas is the best drink in the world to quench your thirst... I wish I had kvas around when I was in Turkey last week... +35 centigrade around me and no kvas... what a torture it was...

Anyway try kvas when you can and dont pull a Sherman by any means... Never refuse!!!

It is apparent that Andrei has never been to Mexico. We all learn the hard way to never drink anything in Mexico that is not bottled. Mexican water can make you sick for weeks. So it was my past experiences with Mexican water that makes me careful. Actually, it was a Mister Misty at the Dairy Queen in Cosumel that made me sick for weeks. My friend was deathly ill for weeks after brushing his teeth with tap water in Cancun. To be honest, the name bread juice isn't that great. If they had just said Kvas and told me it had alcohol in it I would have tried it.

Don't lump me in with them andrei. I liked Kvas. I just had forgotten the name. But then I usually drink heavier imported beers when I drink, so it wasn't much of a culinary stretch.

Now what do they call that pancake/tortilla thingy with caviar inside it? It's like a crepe.

Saw alot of KVAS sellers on the streets when I was in Kazakhstan but never got the chance to try it myself, Hopefully I'll be able to find some when I go back this winter.

Pancakes are called "blini" here (singular is "blin"). You can stuff them with caviar or meat or just dump them in sour cream. Guess they're what you're talkin' about.

"Blin" is also an euphemism (a replace word) for one of the most awful Russian cusswords.

Blin

I don't recognize it with caviar. But with meat.

Her mother and aunt made something with egg and green onion inside, then into hot oil. What is that? also Blin?

Kvas is certainly one of the things I really miss in Canada! In Latvia, kvas seriously outsells CocaCola, Pepsi and all other softdrink companies together

The one you saw being sold on the streets is not only tasting great (well, in my humble opinion *wink* , but it is also very healthy, as it is made via a natural brewery process from the same substance they make beer from, just they dont wait long enough untill it gets alcoholized (it is a non alcoholic drink), and also dont add any chemical preservatives that soft drinks normally contain. People are making kvas at home too.

IMO it has nooooooo similarities with rootbeer .... rootbeer = YUCK kvas = cool

It probably depends on everyone's taste, my husband liked it

Why does everyone hate root beer ? It's my favorite soda next to Dr Brown's cream soda.

I see we have similar taste in that regard.

I also make rootbeer at home sometimes. I use wine yeast to carbonate it.

I'm not much of an alcohol drinker. Its very rare for me to drink alcohol but what I do like is Muscat (correctly pronounced Muscay), its a white wine that is not dry (meaning its a bit sweet) as I don't like dry wines. The onlt things is it would take me months to a year to finish a bottle.
