(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi Guys ,

Ok , I am struggling a bit here , I know that this is an old thread , but I have 1 1/2 weeks till I leave and cannot think of a present to take for Irinas father when I visist him!

I have read all the old posts , but cannot see anything that takes my fancy!

Anyone got any bright ideas?

Perhaps the russian ladies of the site would think about what their fathers would of liked?

Yours in desperation and aching feet from wandering aimlessly around shopping centres!

Hi John
Here are some gift's I gave to my wife's father, when I went twice to Russia.
1) A silk tie.
2) A liquor flask.
3) A bottle of Mexican Tequila.
4) A Craftsman tool set (from Sears).
So you can buy something similar or a variation of these gifts. Yeah it is kind of hard to find something for the father, the sister, mother and grandmother are easy. But when it comes to a brother or father now that is tough. Just ask Irina is she has any ideas for a gift, if she says she doesnt know, ask what does he need?
Hope you will be able to find a gift for him.

There is also a mentality of "implied value" to items. Things made in the U.S. and Western Europe are typically considered to be better made than things from China, Korea, and Taiwan. Mostly because most of the low end junk they get in Russia comes from the later!

One gift I gave Papa that was a big hit was a Leatherman tool. Made in the U.S., and him being a 'Mr. Fix-It', he absolutely loves it!

After you get to meet the parents, and get to know them some, the next time you need to find a gift will be easier...

I gave my future father in law one of those Leatherman tools that you wear on your belt. He had never seen anything like it. It costs about $40. Do not pack it in your carry on. It has a knife. Pack it in your checked baggage. He will love it. I also took some peach wine from a local winery. They love American wine.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your posts , I asked Irina , and this time she suggested a shirt , hat or something to drink. Apperently he likes a drink , but only on special occasions and weekends.

I decided that I would get my relatives to send over a bottle of "pitchin" ( I think I spelt that right!) . Its a home brew drink made from potatoes with a bit of a kick!

I like the liqour flask idea as well! So I will be off shopping at the weekend.

I had some when there last year , and I think it will give true russian vodka a run for its money!

Thanks for your help !

See, j_c, a little bit of inside information can get you far.

As for my future Papa-in-law, he doesn't drink. So I would of felt awkward is I showed up with a bottle or a flask.

Mama, on the other hand, has no problem drinking vodka with the boys. My last evening in Russia this June, Mama, my future brother-in-law, and I were the only ones tossing back a few Russian toasts with vodka...
