Saturday night I was sitting at a table in a restaurant with a lady from Moscow and a lady from Belarus down in Costa Rica. One lady smoked cigarettes, and she sat there with one in her hand. I wanted to do the Texas "gentlemanly thing" and light her cigarette for her. Unfortunately, I don't smoke.
I took a small lit candle from our table at the restaurant and approached her to light her cigarette for her. You'd have thought I shot Putin. She was highly offended, and said that in Belarus, it is extremely offensive for a man to light the cigarette of a lady with anything other than a lighter. Have you guys ever heard of this?
We are so cro-magnon down here in Texas! Will I ever learn?

At least you are not the President. (Bush)
But I think he can teach you, how to make mistakes. He have made some. Thankfullly when he made them, it was with friends like Blair.
But I think maybe its a European issue. I would NEVER go and get the candle-light myself if I had no ligther. I don't smoke myself, but if I go to a party I sometimes use a free promotionsligther or buy like 3 for a dollar.
it works very good, to say to a smoking lady. Keep it.

Castlestormer, repeat after me: "No good deed goes unpunished!" (This comes from the "Cynic's guide to the Universe! )
Seriously, I understand that you were being a gentleman to offer to light a lady's cigareete. Don't lose that chivalry!

A real lady would not have blinked an eyelid realising that Americans are a breed apart (in the nicest possible way).
All sorts of things offend all sorts of people, peace is only broken by the passing of wind.

Bob, thanks! You always make me laugh. Now who else can I offend trying to good?
And as far as breaking peace by the passing of wind: I always blame the dog!
