German Is Arrested

The Moscow Times A 34-year-old German national has been arrested on suspicion of throwing his Russian girlfriend out of a fifth-floor window to her death, police said Tuesday.

The suspect, whom police identified only by his last name, Adler, was detained at about 7 p.m. Monday near 12 Sumskoi Proyezd in southern Moscow. The body of his girlfriend, 34, was found earlier in the day at the address.

Investigators suspect Adler pushed the woman out of the window in a drunken brawl, a police spokeswoman said.

She said Adler is being held at the southern Moscow police department's pretrial detention center.

She refused to say in whose apartment the fight was believed to have taken place but said the victim was registered as living at a different address. Adler had been staying at the Tsentralnaya Hotel on Tverskaya Ulitsa.

German Embassy officials said Tuesday that Adler's relatives had notified them about the arrest. "We can confirm that he is in custody and we are in contact with his relatives," embassy spokesman Wolfgang Bindseil said.

He added that police and prosecutors have yet to contact the embassy about the arrest.

Police have opened a murder investigation. The case is being handled by the Chertanovskaya district prosecutor's office.
