Photo's (how to make image files less than 60kbs)

I posted some of the photo's I took in Almaty, Kazakhstan but most are over 60kb's, Is there a way to make them smaller to post ?

Yeah. You need to open them in a program like PhotoShop, ACDSee, etc. There's a ton of these programs out there, many of them shareware.

These programs will let you take the image, which is several hundred pixels/inch, down to a screen resolution of 72 pixel/inch (76 pixels/inch? Brain locking up here). This will make your 300-400K file much smaller already.

Next, save them as a .jpg file. There usually is an option for how much the program will compress them. More compression = less quality. Compress them small enough so the web site will take them.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Conner for the reply...

I was going to just now respond to Dave, but you beat me to it (thanks)....

As Conner (Fred) mentioned, the file size for a jpeg file is determined by how much compression you set for the file.

In Photoshop (and in several other imaging programs), when you save a jpeg file, it will ask you for the amount of compression that you would like...... Save it with the compression setting that creates the file so that it is less than 60 kb.

Fred.. I agree that setting the photo file's dpi (dots per inch) is important and is affects file size. I usually set the dpi to 100, because my understanding is that some newer monitors display images at 100 dpi, while older monitors display 72 dpi.

By the way... I enjoyed the photos that you recently posted in the Photo Galleries.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question - how is it possible to change the format of a photo, of say, my girlfriend and I down to 50 pixels x 50 pixels? I'm using Imaging software which simply won't allow me to create a picture of that size for all to see?

Many thanks

Are you sure you mean 50x50 pixels? That's absolutely tiny!

Anyway, if you want to do this, you'll first need to ensure the photo is already square or you'll be changing the aspect ratio and it'll look squashed (if you can even see it!)

I use Paint Shop Pro and it has an option (Image->Resize) for doing exactly what you want. You can resize to a specific size or to a %age of the original size.

50 x 50 is the size of the Avatars used on this site.

Remember to crop your image as close as possible to the subject. 50 pixels don't give you much elbow room for background.

Download the Paint Shop Pro trial version. It is fully functional and gives you great control over photos. Great for taking Digital Camera shots and lowering the res down to web quality pics at low KB's. Also great for creating an avatar from your pics.

Get the size to 400 and use photoshop. That's the software I like using for digital work whether its photography or creating marketing material for corporations.

Although when its layout design etc, its different softwares but try photoshop and sez 400, 50 is too small, tiny, yeah, like size of an Avatar.

Oh yeah, sorry people, I'm new here and hi!!!

If you're running Windows XP use THIS link to get a very easy free image downsizer. It's about halfway down on the right hand side. You can easily customize a 50 X50 pic. It'll leave the origional and make the smaller copy. ALOT better than Photoshop for simple downsizeing.
