An interesting day today. I was at home doing work since I was sick but still needed to get some things done so telecommuting was the order of the day.
At least it got me away from most, though not all of the phone calls.

Anyway, Ksenia asked me to install Yahoo Messenger a while ago which we had been trialing. Up until today I would have said it was good. Today however it became a pain.

1. We had different versions of the software. I *think* she must be running version 6 whereas I downloaded the latest - version 7. All appeared fine but when I was trying to share out a picture/avatar - nothing. ok, so that didn't go well. Then, she tried to send me a photo which also failed. I've since read up that Yahoo Messenger may not have worked in that situation because of the different versions but also does not handle firewalls well - of which I have two in my setup. A commercial product and one that I built. (-:

I then get the following question...

"Why are you being cold with me?"

ok, mad panic on my part to try to convey what is going on from my side..
How do you convey the concept of a firewall????

but it all seems to have worked out ok.

*whew*

I'm resorting back to phone tomorrow afternoon! Mind you - my phone line got disconnected by the phone company for a week recently and in the process of putting mine back - they killed the lines of my two neighbours so that hasn't been without issue either!

Most of Russian internet is Linux based, and Windows OS programs like Yahoo have serious compatability issues and need many patches to work. You sound like you may be a programmer, and could be the next Russian Bill Gates if you fix this crap.

Send photos by email, and us ICQ for voice communication and cams if she has at least 64KB online by phone.

It is free and has a perfect bridge between Linux/BSD and Windows based formats.

good luck

The best program for IM typing is ICQ
The best program for voice on the net with Russia is Skype.
I am still experimenting with the cam and having problems because of their limited bandwidth.
