"Wakan" is a Native American Lakota term that means "in the spirit of the Great Spirit," or "having qualities of the Great Spirit."

The company that sponsors the Wakan Forums is "The Wakan Foundation for the Arts," which is a 501(c)(3) non profit corporation that aims to "uplift humanity through the arts."

Khashyar Darvich, who started the Wakan Forum, also founded The Wakan Foundation for the Arts, which has had its award-winning documentary films broadcast on national television.
