Hi Everyone,

In considering which "State" or "Provincial" flags to create for certain countries with large numbers of members in our forum, I am considering whether to create "Oblast" flags for Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine.

In America, an individual's "State" plays an important part of their life, and many people place importance on identifying themselves by the state they live in. Canadians and Australians feel similarly.

I asked Lena about whether a Belarusian person's oblast is important to them, and she said "no," and that most people would not recognize their oblast flag.

Lena told me that a Belarusian citizen's city is a much more important identifier for them than their oblast.

Even though many Belarusian cities have their own flags, Lena said she did not know that and did not know the flag for Mogilev.

I am assuming that Russia and Ukraine are similar to Belarus in the importance of one's oblast.

I also assume that this arose from the Soviet education of making "the State" more important than the individual or the individual region.

Does anyone else have any insight about this?

I am really wondering whether to create profile flags for a Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian forum member's oblast, city, or not create the flags at all because it would not be important to them?

I'm interested to hear other's informed feedback about this.
