Hi all
I have been hearing a lot of things lately about statistics of the Russian male/female ratio, divorce rate, and possible causes of divorce, about alcoholism and unfaithfulness between Russian men and women, and giving or guessing about such statistics. So I decided to go searching for the truth, just to find the plain facts. This is what I have found so far about population and male to female ratio.

Note: Data updated 7-17-2003 (Release notes).

This information by these factual sources, dismisses the stereotype of there been a shortage of Russian men. There is though a shortage of Russian men in the 50+ range. But that is due of course to WWII and life expectancy. But it is almost 50/50 in 0-49 age group. But overall the russian population as a whole is shirnking because of the pop. growth rate.
Note: Now in terms of the availability, eligibility, and desirability of Russian men that is different, and it would be impossible to figure that out.

Thanks for the research. This does raise serious questions about the claim that for every Russian male there is four or five females...hmmm. I thought the statistic as to the Russian male life expectancy was rather astonishing...I think that in the states, the male life expectancy is around 76 years of age!

Thanks for the very interesting information, DAX...

From my understanding, the shortage of men is at least in part a result of older Russian men pursuing younger Russian women...

Another question... Why is it that Russian women have the perception that there is a shortage of Russian men??

It is true that Russian men die substancially younger than Russian women do.

I would like to hear a Russian woman's perspective regarding this.

Yeah Khashyar, only a Russian woman could answer you that question. The reason I did this was to find if it is true they were saying about a shortage of Russian men, ratio 2 to 5 or 3 to 5 or whatever the ratio. Because to me it didn't seem logical that there was such a ratio. If there was, then there had to be explaination, like a war where millions of Russian men died (similar to WWII), or that for some reason Russian women were giving birth to more female babies than male babies. But there has not been such a war and the theorical probability that there was such a big difference in the sex of the baby is very slim. Not just that but when I was in Russia, I didn't see any difference in the sex ratio. I noticed just as many men as there were women. I was hoping to see all these women walking around the city with a less men around them. But no, I saw just as many men walking around the city as women. This sex ratio difference might have been true 50-60 years ago, but not now. Sorry the scientist in me came out.
