Hello everybody!!!!
I saw this thread was empty so decided to put some information about my Lovely city Kiev (on Russian) or Kyiv (on Ukrainian)

Here I put story about Kiev from one of my travel pages. Enjoy it

Well…. So from what to start first? Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine and its population is blah..blah…blah. You can find this info everywhere. So first of all I would like to tell that Kyiv is one of the most beautiful cities in the world especially during spring when you can enjoy blossoming of chestnut trees (the symbol of Kyiv), green grass of numerous alleys and tight air because of perfumes of blossoming. Kyiv’s churches make you think that you are not in XXI century, but hundreds years ago, you want to come closer to walls, to touch them and to feel the ancient times when our ancestors hadn’t know what computers, cars and different modern things are. To my mind beauty of Kyiv is old monuments, but at the same time if you are a person of space world, you can see modern buildings, customs, services and places that live in harmony with rarities.

The legend about the founding of Kiev is very beautiful: “And there were three brothers: Kiy, Scheck, Khoriv, and their sister was Lybid. They built a town and they called it Kiev, after the oldest brother.” This is the starting point of the history of the city on the Dnipro – the acknowledge spiritual center of Rus, Ukraine and the eastern Slavs.

What is worth to see in Kyiv? I could put very long list with famous places, sights. Did you hear Khreshchatik street? Pecherskaya Lavra? St. Sophia Cathedral? Golden Gate? Podol? Andreyevskiy spusk? If you didn’t, I assure you that you don’t know Kyiv at all. The House with Khimeras, Cathedral of St. Michael, St. Andrew’s church, National Philharmonic, Friendship of the People Monument, Mariyinskiy Palace, the Iron Lady (Rodina-Mat’ statue), Babiy Yar, bridges. You can see different panoramas of Dnipro, one of the longest rivers in Europe that has lots of resort-inlands. If you are lucky to come to Kyiv in summer you can go to enjoy sun baths, warm water in Hydropark – resort area with beaches, cafes, clubs and casinos. Don’t be afraid that water is dirty, at least not everywhere, for example I am still alive despite of the fact that I spend lots of time swimming in Dnipro… lol… here you can have a thought that I got used to it. Probably :-))
There are lots of theatres like National Opera Theatre, Ivan Franko Ukrainian Drama Theatre, Lesya Ukrayinka Russian Drama theatre, Operetta Theatre, Drama and Comedy theatre of the Left bank, Bravo, Koleso and others so you can guarantee nice evening for yourself, your friends, lovely person. Kyiv is full with night clubs, casinos, restaurants, cafes, so you will be able to shake your body and have a drink.

To my mind communication with people is easy. Of course not everyone can speak English, but every Kyivans has skills of gesture language and hospitality. The most of them are really polite … lol.. especially with foreigners.
You can get everywhere by bus, trolley bus, tram. There are lots of “marshrutka” or (mini buses) that go to every corner of Kyiv. Don’t be confused when you see lots of them and have no idea what way it goes even with help of people around you (you will have lots of them you need only to ask someone something). Some Kyivans don’t know to where and from where they go also :-) It is good chance of fun adventure, isn’t it?

Welcome to Kyiv!!!

Hi Olenka!

Kyiv is now almost my native city and my husband's native city

It is nice to see another "Kyanka" here

Do you currently live in Kyiv, or have you moved somewhere?

ÊȯÂ

In Ukrainian È is like the Russian Û (a "hard" vowel). ¯ has no Russian equivalent: it is "yi" (in English).

Also, "Ukraine" in Ukrainian is Óêðà¿íà.

Thank Jill!
Do you not think that the Ukrainian language is a little bit rough in comparison with Russian. For me it sounds as deformed Russian.
Do you know Ukrainian as well as Russian?

Posted by: Jill

I know Ukrainian on a conversational level (I know Russian better), but I am studying with a tutor and trying to learn it

I don't know if I would say that it sounds "rough,"--maybe you think this because of all the "h" sounds (where in Russian there is "g").

Actually I like the sound of Ukrainian--it does sound strange if you are used to hearing Russian, but it is really a very melodic language (in my opinion). Now surzhyk, on the hand, does sound very rough to me. My father in law is from a village and can speak only in surzhyk

surzhyk? What does it mean?
How about Âåðêè Ñåðäþ÷êè? Do you like him? I adore
I was in Kiev in June of the last year. There was a first meeting with mí man, we liked it very much

Surzhyk is the mass of Russian and Ukrainian together. It sounds terrible and, unfortunately many people speak in this way Often Ukrainian words can be pronounced as Russian ones and vica versa. It is surzhik either.

As a Ukrainian and just a person who speaks both languages, Ukrainian and Russian, I would say that Ukrainian is more melodical than Russian. I know that Ukrainian is next in the line after Italian among the most beautiful sounded languages. Probably this servey was among European languages.
To prove this I will tell you that Ukrainian language uses more vowels in words than Russian language and it makes it pretty

WOW I know this thread is easily more than a year old, but it has sold Kiev to me once again I don't know if OlenkaKyiv still posts here, but that was a very good advert for Kiev.

I agree that the people are friendly, those who I spoke to were anyway. I met numerous people out there, who were very interesting people. Many could not speak much or any English - which was to be expected, in my view - but we easily communicated by hand gestures etc. On my last full day, I strolled into an indoor food market (by mistake) and loved walking around, tasting some of the food. The people there were very friendly and I got chatting to a couple of people who could speak some English.

Podil was an area which I almost went through the day before I was due to fly back. I took a wrong turn and ended up going in another direction I never used public transport, partially because I couldn't speak Russian. I didn't want to hold everyone up and being on my initial visit I was not confident in using trains, buses etc on my own. I only used taxis.

Even in winter Kiev was lovely, with all that snow everywhere I was loving it. I was a bit gutted when it all melted away the day before I was due to fly home.

I hope to be going next month and hopefully catch a little more snow, before it melts away I also hope I get to see more of my friend when I'm over there
