IT work in Moscow

Greetings,

I am planning a trip to Moscow to my fiancee and since it will take months until K3 is granted, I thought about staying there until that happens. I am fluent in the language. How's IT work there? I work as a Unix Systems Admin. I realize the money isn't the same as here, I am familiar with the payscale, but I would have a place to stay and most of my current expenses taken care of.

I only have American citizenship.
Are there any forums I can use for IT work abroad?
Any russian forums? I tried jobs.ru but it's not IT-specific.
I would think the fact I am bilingual and know Unix *and* willing to live there is a huge asset.

What kind of visa would I need to apply for, and how long does it take?

Thanks in advance.

My guess is that it will be hard to find something. One thing that is Russia is in no short supply of is skilled computer programmers. And they have a fairly hard time finding suitable work themselves...Which is why so many end up in the US

Plus, with US citizenship, you will need to find an employer willing to sponsor your work visa and the bureacracy that goes with it. Many Russian employers likely won't want to bother--not when there is a good local supply of komputershiki. You might try some Western businesses, although my guess is that they also hire locally (for example, the US organization I work for has several offices in Russia and is involved in IT, and ALL of our tech staff is Russian).

But I may be wrong and it's always worth taking a shot at. Sorry, I don't know any sites off hand, but I believe we have a few computer guys here on RMP that might have better insight into the field.

Good luck!

thank you for the reply, Кавказская пленница.
I am aware of the difficulties. How long do you think it would take to get a work visa in Russia? I would prefer to work for a "foreign" firm than russian... I am looking for such a forum which specializes in foreign IT work. There are a lot of Americans/foreigners in Moscow. But I imagine they all working for foreign firms, not russian ones.

It's not much better here in US. They say the economy is not in a recession, but lots of tire-kickers lately.

You may want to check with Intel. My brother works for them (in Portland) and was commenting about the fact that they were looking for a network admin. in Nizhniy Novgorod @ 4 months ago....
Worth a shot anyhow.
Also might check www.expat.ru sometimes they have job listings

I've been looking at the same thing. Intel has a lot of openings, particularly for sys admin types. I am also in touch with a startup, OilSpace, that advertised for a director of professional services, they may need people.
