Ok...I've just started self study in the Russian language. No...I do not yet know if it will become more than a whim but it's been an interesting exploration so far.

My given name is Gerard. And everybody calls me Jerry. Both are pronounced with the English soft "g" or "j" sound. There doesn't seem to be an equivalent in Russian. The closest I've found is "zh". (Sorry that I haven't set things up to type Cyrillic yet.)

Is there a Russian name equivalent to "Gerard" and/or "Jerry"?

I'm not sure if there are direct equivalents in Russian for those names since they are quite western. However you can translate it into Russian pretty easily. I know that Russians say John as 'Djon', so I assume that saying Gerard would be much the same. If so, I would spell it as: 'Djerard' (Джэрард). The only possible variation I can think of would osund like 'Djyerard', that is, with a softer 'e' as opposed to the hard 'э'. I'd write that as Джерард. However, if you want your name to have less emphasis on the 'G' sound at the beginning (as these 2 variations will have an emphasis on it) you can eliminate the first letter and write it as жэрард or жерард. Although with these 2 spellings the name will sound as if those who pronounce it are speaking with a bit of a French accent, that's why I personally think that one of the first two variations is the closest translation.

Because the J in Jerry is a hard sound, then I'm almost certain it would be written 'Djerri' as in Джзрри. The only reason I have 2 'p's is because in almost every English -> Russian translation double letters are also transcribed. Hope this helps.

Well, to me, the beginnings of "jazz" and "Jerry" sound identical (English accent), and they write "jazz" "джаз"...
