I have a strange "tech" question.

I am on a DSL connection and use Black Ice firewall. I live in Texas, USA. I do some Internet surfing daily, but not a lot. Here is my question: When I visit this site or Russia.com, I get an inordinate amount of port probes and have various intruders try to send stackers and other stuff against me. Why is this? Am I the only one that has this phenomenon happen?

The only time I have serious hack attempts is when I visit sites that are concerning Russia. Yesterday I spent a few hours researching Russian orphanages, and my firewall protection went crazy. I had to stop and do full scans with Spybot and Norton about every hour.

What is the deal? Why Russian themed web sites? Coincidence, or have I ticked off Putin and this is his revenge?

I need help from the brilliant minds here.

I've noticed increased questionable activity too but not as marked as yours. I use McAfee products that probably operate a little more in the background than the ones you cited. Keep us posted if you find out anything specific that we can protect against.

Hi Keith and Steve...

You said that you believe that people might be trying to hack onto your computer when you visit THIS website??

That seems odd to me. How would anyone know if you were visiting The Russian Meeting Place, for example.

Certainly no one affiliated with the RMP is trying to hack into your computer...

Please keep me posted about this.

Khashyar:

No, not this site but other Russia-related sites.

This morning I spent about 20 minutes checking email and going to a motorcycle site that I belong to. Nothing happened at all. Then I came here. Within 4 minutes I had 17 port probes and two attempts to send stackers against me. The stackers were sent by 62.39.120.107, and 67.67.190.10. Nothing made it through, and my firewall blocked all the attempts. But I find it a strange coincidence.

Yesterday I didn't get any probes or stackers until I visited Russia.com. Last night I surfed a little without incident until I went to Orphanage.org and I started visiting sites for orphanages in Russia. Then the strange stuff began.

Is there a link? Is it merely coincidence? Am I spending far too much time visiting Russia themed web sites? This is weird.

Steve...

How could someone know that you were visiting this website?

Of course, we don't use any kind of spyware on this site.

(Could you please explain what a "stacker" is? I'm not exactly sure.. )

I checked those IP addresses that you listed (I can check through this forum's admin panel to see if any of our members have ever logged on using those IP addresses), and none of our members have ever used those IP addresses.

Is there a chance that some kind of spyware is already installed on your computer, and that it can recognize when you type in the word "Russia"?

A Spyware program was once saved on my computer that would track all of the search variables that I used...

I also just checked on my website's "last visitors" IP list, and those IP addresses don't show up there.

I am curious as to what this could be, so... if anyone else has any ideas about this, please let us know.

Is there some way to call your firewall software's company to find out more?

As all forum software does, this forum software does place a cookie on your hard drive so that it can understand if you are logged on or off of the forum, but that is the extent of the interaction with your computer through this software.

And if you learn more, Steve, keep me informed.
