Gift giving a computer?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Well after lurking for a while, I've decided to do my first post.

Firstly, what an amazing website. Something to help negotiate the minefield out there for everybody involved in this process.

Anyway, I have read a lot of the posts previous that indicate buying a computer over in Russia is a better option than shipping something. (which I agree with - pity, I have a lot of stuff I could ship!)

Can anyone recommend any gift giving web sites that do computer equipment?

The closest I've seen does dishwashers and MP3 players which is not quite what I want..

I brought a notebook with me when I visited. (I know...this is of no help!) Here's a tip that might be helpful though: Russian keyboards are different from English keyboards. I bought some stickers for the keys, but the layout was still not quite what Tatiana was used to. If I had it to do over again, I would have purchased the computer there. I do not know of any Russian businesses where you can purchase (over the internet) a computer and have them deliver it to your girl. Although it might be possible to do this over the phone, it could be that you will need to speak Russian to do so. Maybe you could have your girl do a little research, and you could send her the money to buy one. Are you thinking about her using it to access the internet? You may have already done so, but she will need to get set up with an ISP. I know you have likely already considered this, just thought I'd mention it.

Sorry I wasn't more help,

Thanks for the Reply That1Guy,

Sometimes confirming a view is as much use as providing extra information.

However, it might actually be possible. Having a closer look at flamingo, which I have used for an order of flowers and chocolates already it does appear to offer a custom order which may allow such things as computers.

Pretty much guaranteed to not be very cost effective though..

Since I've not yet met the person I'm interested in, such a purchase is not on the immediate horizon but I'll file it away for future reference.

I did expect getting an ISP setup to be a whole different battle!

Makes the response to my telephone question of "Do you have internet access at home" completely understandable.. (-:

At this stage my plan is for a visit to St Petersburgh in May 2006. This didn't go down well initially but my explanation for the delay (partially work and partially other reasons) seemed to go down well.
