There is a nice little Ukrainian grocery store about 10 miles north of Atlanta called Golden Key European Grocery. Everything about it reminds me of the shops in Kherson and Odessa. They do not sell beer. If you want Russian beer you need to go to the European Deli or New Odessa. Both are just North of Atlanta. Also just inside the north end of town is Club Europe. It has all of the Russian and Eastern European beverages. I teach dance in the same building and there are a lot of Russian speaking people in the club late at night.

Sherman, I'm glad you started a discussion in the Atlanta section.

How good (or bad) is Russian beer and how does it compare to American brands? Is beer popular in Russia? I and perhaps many others tend to assoicate hard liquors with Russia more than beer. If I should ever visit Russia, what's the brand of Russian vodka to bring home? Also, would you care to recommend a place and maybe a dish that I could take in on my next trip to Atlanta? I know absolutely nothing about Russian cuisine.

Russian beer is better than American if you like a robust flavor. I can't pronounce the names of the beers I had there I just asked for a Lager. The best Vodka I tried was a brand that had a hot red pepper in the bottle. I brought back a bottle. But I must admit that my favorite drink was the Russian and Ukrainian Cognac. Once again I can't pronounce the names but they all were excellent. They all come in a bottle sized just right for 2 people to share and they have a cork top since you are supposed to drink the whole bottle. I brought back some for gifts to friends and they love them. The most expensive bottle was about $4. My lady likes wine so I took a couple of bottles of Chateau Elan Peach wine to show her the local winery's work. She and her parents loved the sweet wine. They also shared with me a 10 year old bottle of Ukrainian Champaigne that they had been saving for a special occasion. I could go on forever about the quality and wonderful flavor of the Russian and Ukrainian beverages. Be sure that you take hard luggage so you can bring some back with you. You can bring back as much as you like for only a small tax when you arrive here. I forget if I paid the tax or not. I think that New Odessa sells Russian beer so you should give it a try.

Also, as far as Russian eating places in Atlanta, there is only one truely Russian resteraunt here that I can recommend. It is called Nickoli's Roof. You will need a reservation and a lot of money. It is the best in town but worth it. If you don't want to spent the bucks, there is a Russian/Italian place called Verdi Resteraunt. To find more places in Atlanta, log onto the RussianAtlanta.net website. It lists the address and phone numbers of all things Russian in Atlanta. They also have a discussian forum but it can't touch the work done here. This website is wonderful and I hope that some day my Lena can log on also. Later.
