Voip ("Voice Over Internet Protocol") for cheap long distance communicaton

Some of the men on this forum have stated that they speak to their Russian women on the phone almost daily. That probably gets rather costly. For somebody like me with a modest income, and living in southern California, it's simply too expensive for me to do that. Fortunately, there are inexpensive and free alternatives.

VOIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol, allows people to communicate over the Internet for little or nothing.

Skype:

Calls to land-line phones in certain areas in Russia are between 2 and 4 cents/min. Belarus is about 20 cents/min, and Ukraine is around 10 cents/min.
Supposedly works over dial-up with minimal loss of sound quality.

Gizmo:

I just signed up with Packet8 this week (and just received the FedEx tracking number for the adapter this morning). Just got completely fed up with the telephone connection quality of both the Nobel.com and LDPost.com calling card connections I have been getting this past month.

I'll give my review after setting it up and trying it for a few days...

I've been with Packet8 for about 9 months. I've been happy with it. I've even taken the phone adapter with me to work and other places to make phone calls. My only complaint about Packet8 is that it doesn't natively support a softphone (unlike Vonage). However, it's possible to use the softphone from FreeWorld Dialup. It's cumbersome but it works.

Google just released an instant messenger program which allows free, unlimited voice chat:

So far the Packet8 VOIP has been working as well as I expected. There have been a few calls where the sound quality was pretty poor, but at least one I can attribute to the recipients cell phone. The rest are probably not anything to do with Packet8 (or VOIP), but the overseas LD telephone network the call gets patched into. Nobody can avoid that problem.

At $0.07/min, I can't complain with that...

Anyone wishing a real life testimonial, drop me a PM.

Hi everybody,
The problem of fat telephone bill is always there. Although now there is the option of using internet phone cards most of the people are affraid of using them. They think they will lose their money and anyways they are complicated to use.
All I can say is that i use services from CallTalkNow and i am very pleased. The rates from calling US to Russia can be as low as 3.9c/min. I can tell you that is no scam or trick. You send an e-mail and you receive a PIN. Then pick up the phone and start making calls. It's very cost effective and easy to use. The quality is good and if you compare with AT&T or Verizon you'll see it's not such a big difference in quality but only their high rates.
Also you may check out their long distance service and see which plan fits you best. You have also the option of automatic recharging and automatic number identification.
Hope this helps.

Hello Friends
I to have to watch my budget. I am kind of new to this computer stuff so am wodering where do I get info on how to make calls using my computer? It would be nice to call for 1 to 5 cents/min. instead of the 20 cents + 4.00 dollars a month that sprint wants.
