Dissapointment with new political leadership in Ukraine

And here I was under the impression that Yuschenko and his new government was to bring some new
respect and much needed increase in life quality to the Ukrainian people. But not so. Apparently eastern districts who voted for Yanukovitch are now being punished by new local authorities who have even longer delays, even infinite delays, on people's salaries for their hard work. This pisses me off, but I should have known better. History repeats itself along with the endless greed of corrupt people in high positions.

Sham and sharade ... orange revolution my foot!

My husband is still very happy with the new government, although he was quite incensed over the recent scandal with Yushchenko's son, Andriy. Well, it's a dirty business, I suppose, no matter who's in charge. I still have hope for Yushchenko and I do think he is better than Kuchma and better than Yanukovich would have been. The latest developments in the Gongadze case are strange, though. They are saying that the case is more or less closed--but it seems that the main conspirators are all still walking free. So I think Yushchenko has fallen a little short of the justice that he promised.

I'm not dissappointed, because I never expected anything better from Yuschenko and Tymoshenko people in the first place.

What's that saying? Set your expectations low and you will never be disappointed

Which is kind of true, because just yesterday I read that people who hang around those who are less wealthy and less successfull than they are usually happier.

This was, of course, a study "announced by reaserchers" ... but then I've made that observation some time ago - people who hang around those who have less than they can feel better about themselves as "the better ones" ... but you know that universities need to take grants for some sort of research like this and academics need to write PhD's about trivial subjects.

So the latest scandal. Hate to say it, Pin Boy, but your lady Tymoshenko is in hot water now. Eviedntly she only declared an income of $12,000 last year and claims to only have savings of $300 in the bank. Meanwhile, some journalists at ukrainska pravda have published a long article about the prices of the Louis Vuitton wardrobe she has recently acquired. At a recent press conference she had the audacity (or sense of humor?) to tell the journalists present that she is really no better off financially than they are

Yes Jill, and is it also not true that Tymoshenko is referred to as the "Gas Princess" of Ukraine (she used to wheel and deal in natural gas companies, no?).

"The (real) revolution will not be televised ..."

Yes, Fisherman, you are right. And she was also very close (some even say the mistress of) Lazarenko who is now sitting in jail in San Francisco...

BUT! God help me, I am an optimist by nature. Yes, there are skeletons in the closet of both Yushchenko and Tymoshenko, but I don't think Yanukovich would have been any more honest or trustworthy had he been elected. In fact, despite these scandals, I still believe that Yushchenko is more willing and able to move Ukraine forward and develop a higher standard of living for most Ukrainians than Yanukovich would have done (or than Kuchma did). As the Russian saying goes, hope dies last...

Are we all jumping the gun here? It may not be in this generation but the ball has only begun to roll, no one said changes will take place over night.

Lets give em a chance to do the weeding before we comment on their garden.

Here's the scoop on Yulka:

"YULIYA TYMOSHENKO - THE MILLION DOLLAR WOMAN?

ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY: By Leonid Amchuk
Ukrayinska Pravda website, Kiev, in Ukrainian 15 Aug 05
BBC Monitoring Service, UK, in English, Monday, August 15, 2005

KYIV - Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko's taste for luxury outfits is at
odds with her declared income, a Ukrainian web site has alleged.

In an article titled "Yuliya Tymoshenko - the million dollar woman?"
published on the Ukrayinska Pravda web site, Leonid Amchuk writes,
"Yuliya Tymoshenko is probably the poorest person in the world who
wears Louis Vuitton clothing in everyday life."

Amchuk calculates the cost of a number of Louis Vuitton outfits and
accessories that Tymoshenko has been seen wearing during public
engagements this year at 31,620 dollars. He goes on to compare this figure
with Tymoshenko's declared income for 2004 of 12,400 dollars and her
earnings this year as prime minister of 3,500 dollars a month since June,
and 600 dollars previously.

Amchuk points out that Tymoshenko has said that she owns no shares and
has 900 hryvnyas (under 200 dollars) in her bank account. He also doubts
that her husband could pay for her outfits, since Tymoshenko has said that
he has just started up an agricultural business.

"A love of fine clothes has confirmed what many suspected but nobody has
proved, that Tymoshenko is living beyond her means," he concludes.

Leonid Amchuk is the pseudonym of Ukrayinska Pravda journalist Serhiy
Leshchenko, who recently published a series of articles describing the
extravagant lifestyle of President Viktor Yushchenko's son, Andriy.

Hi

I think its rather difficult to find 100% honest politicans in the FSU. I remember Danish Tv, showed some dumentaries about the candidates, and yes. Yukasenko is a ruthless businessman and a rich one. You simple don't have become that in FSU without being a tampered at the 'nice boy' image.

For me its was more a choose between, democracy, moving toward EU and more market economy rather than semi-democracy, closer relationships with Russia and more state economy.
And guess who should benefit from the market economy ??? Yeah. The Presidential gang !!!

Posted by: Pawel_PL.USA

Well, somebody always benefits from something ... but the Kuchma-Yanukovych regime were actually more free-makret than Yuschenko-Tymoshenko - Yanukovych cut taxes while Tymoshenko is regulating the sugar market with price controls and subsidies ...

Other than that, not much will change in the Ukraine other than political orientation - these guys will lean more towards Berlin and bring back the German and Nazi-collarating, anti-Polish "traditons" of Ukrainian nationalism. Such Oriental features as oligarchy, corruption, gvt above the law and nepotism won't change however.
