How to make the RMP even better? What works well? What should we change or improve?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Khashyar

Hi Everyone,

I sincerely want to make the Russian Meeting Place the very best resource for our visitors, and I want to hear your sincere and truthful thoughts about what you like about the Russian Meeting Place... what you think it does very well, as well as what you think it can do better (and how).

We want to serve you and our visitors in the very best way, so feel free to tell us what we do well, as well as give us suggestions for how we can serve you and our visitors even better.

I wanted to open this thread to receive open and honest feedback, so that Lena and I could truly continue to improve the RMP for everyone.

I think that it is important to be open to honest, sincere feedback, so that we can see things clearly, and continue to improve the RMP and help it serve you and others in the best way possible.

I want to build this RMP community together, and your honest input helps us to continue to serve others in the best way that we can.

Thanks,

Khashyar

Pawel's very smart....

That's one of the reasons that I would like him to stay in the forum...

Forum layout. More colour contrast would be easier to read and on the eyes. Thrown in some nice blue backgrounds and stuff. Or green/orange if you're going to keep that lilac purple.
And all those photos at the top of the page and all the links and all the icons makes it take ages to load every page. That can be annoying when you're used to click and see browsing. Can they all go into trees or something you can open if you want?
You know, a bit of presentation conservatism to balance out the bolsheviks (hehe, kidding with that last remark).

Posted by: Pawel_PL.USA

Vanir, I think I do my part in balancing out the bolsheviks .

Thank You Khashyar, I wasn't acutally looking for a compliment, I just like to be self-critical sometimes. I think modern society needs self-criticism badly.

And I do admit, I often give people the impression of an opinionated, cocky Polish "smart ass", even though I don't intend to.

I like the thumbnail photos at the top I click on most of them but I can understand about slow as i didnt always have broadband.

How about a new logo instead of the 500 x 308 piccie
not instulting your sweet kissy photo you auld romantic you or will Lena go mad? how about a wide banner type instead same photos though? oh the font on it is a bit weird how about a russian font backward R's and the like?

oh and can we have a poll on wether we kick out Pawel hehehe ;o)

love him/hate him he is an important part of this forum.

Posted by: Khashyar

Thanks for the suggestion, Lep...

I am going to have to reduce the photo size of the front logo anyway (to save bandwidth), and so I was going to either greatly reduce the current front forum pic, or perhaps even add the RMP banner that is on the individual thread pages.

If you have some ideas for a new logo, send me some visual ideas.

Khashyar

Posted by: Khashyar

I'm going to definitely have to redesign the RMP front website page, as there are too many larger photos there that take up too much bandwidth.

Posted by: Leprechaun

I will have a look at a header banner

also in my yahoo mail box the "senders" name of replys that im subscribed to is way long

Hi Lep...

Yes, the forum title is very long, because I am trying to have as many keywords in the webpage title as possible so that we show up in as many search engine search results as possible.

I know know that it is not grammatically beautiful, but I wanted to include as many pertinent search words in the title as possible.

Khashyar

Posted by: Leprechaun

I DELETED PART OF THIS POST AS I DONT WANT OTHER TO KNOW THE INNERMOST SECRETS OF THE INTERNET

So the title is what you are stuck with as the sender of mails?

cant u configure the PHP to use something else as the sender of mail? weird!!!

Hi Lep,

Thank you for your feedback and your ideas about SEO for the RMP forum and website.

The search engine ranking change almost every month, and it is hard to predict where a website will show up

The Search Engines like Yahoo and Google have their own logarithms, which also change from time to time.

I have heard many webmasters say that it is difficult to try to create your website to please SEs...

But, my understanding that the number of relevant links to a website, as well as the webpages title, are the most important factors in SE rankings.

In Google, we are 4th for "Russian forum," 1st for "Russian Forums," 1st for "Russian BBS"

It is interesting how we are ranked differently in Yahoo and Google, but it shows that each SE has a unique formula for determining SE ranking.

Our ranking changes almost every month Because the search engines change their calculations every month

As far as the PHP code I don't want to hack the PHP code too much, in case I want to upgrade the software.

However, I welcome your thoughts and ideas, Lep, regarding how to better optimize the forum and website...

Maybe we can begin a thread about that in the Moderator Forum, so that what we do to optimize the website won't be broadcast too freely to other Russian websites on the WWW

Thanks for your help with this,

Khashyar

Posted by: Leprechaun

other sites, competition?

I dont feel any site can touch what we have going on here
thats why im here and they are there....

Posted by: Khashyar

Yes, thanks for the kind words and support, Lep

I just don't want to publicly share too much about the inner workings of the website with other webmasters.

It's almost like sharing a business plan with other companies (though we are more like a non-profit company).

Khashyar

Posted by: Leprechaun

all webmasters know of SEO so dont worry we all want our sites to be high and investigate how to do it

so dont worry

Posted by: Khashyar

Hi Lep,

Yes, some aspects of SEO are pretty general knowledge, and many webmasters are familiar with them.

However, there are some things that we are doing here that I know other webmasters are not doing... so I would feel more comfortable continuing our discussion in private, if you don't mind

Khashyar

Posted by: Leprechaun

ok go delete the part of thread where we begin this chat ;o)

Posted by: Khashyar

Hi Lep...

It's ok... we can keep this part of the discussion here (in case others have ideas about SEO for the RMP)...

I just opened a private thread for the Moderators, so we can get into more specifics about SEO and other more private website administration discussions in that thread.

I do appreciate your help and your ideas in improving the Search Engine rankings of the RMP...

We are receiving at least 1,500 unique visitors per day to the website, but I say "the more forum visitors who can join in on our discussions, the better"

Khashyar

I deleted meself
=o)

Posted by: Khashyar

I do appreciate your feedback and suggestions, Lep.

Posted by: vanir

Another thought, why not enable the img code for posts, so I can have a picture that's relevant to a post actually display in it instead of a stupid url link.
I mean that's what url code is for. Image code is for images. I mean if it was a bandwidth issue, I'd rather have properly enabled features than all those overdressed smilies.

Posted by: Khashyar

Hi Vanir...

I just forgot to turn that feature on in the new software....

That should be working now.

Posted by: KyDale

Khashyar, this is a wonderful site and you and the moderators do an outstanding job with the content, neutrality, and just plain good common sense and respect! I've appreciated the site immensley! IMHO, I believe it may help if each post was dated. With so much changing so fast, it is difficult to know what year, which month of what year, etc. The forum is GREATLY appreciated Sir, Thank You!!! And certainly thank Lena as well!!! Dale

Posted by: Khashyar

Welcome to the Russian Meeting Place, Dale.

There is a date displayed for each post (the date of a post is above the person's name in the top left hand corner of a message).

I look forward to your participation and contributions to the forums.

Khashyar

Posted by: KyDale

Don't I feel silly for missing that all this time!!!

Posted by: bobjf

khashyar & moderaters this is the best site of it,s type on the net.
i belong to a few forums & apart from posting problems some of us are experiancing it beats the others hands down
well done guys.

Posted by: Khashyar

Thanks for your supportive comments, Bob...

I have added a "fix" to the posting issue, and I believe that it is resolved now...

Posted by: Justlooking

How about a forum for women, so we can trade beauty tips and recipe's? LOL.

Posted by: loprovideo

hello
i am a newbie here so i am still unfamiliar about how the site works, but if i can say...
it would be a lot easier if there was a simpler list of subjects to discuss
i found that when i am looking for a certain subject i need info on, it takes a bit of looking before i find it. like i said, i am new to the club, and may just need to get used to things, there is a lot of useful info, and you can only have it as organize as it can get, maybe a different listing style, just my opinion, thanks
bri

in this thread i noticed there were a lot of off topic posts, and retiring a certain member was the best idea, although i dont feel his intentions were entirely bad, they werent jiving with the rest of the group, a little too blunt(rude, if you will), and certainly way off topic, so thumbs up to the Retirement!!!! its started to look like this
we dont need that here, this seems to be a pleasant place to get great info, and share interests with good people, which is why i joined in the first place
thanks
Brian

I agree, Brian.

I deleted the off-topic posts in this thread.

Thanks for your feedback, and I appreciate your participation in the RMP Forums.

The Forum is getting a bit too large. Would it be possible to consolidate some boards and to turn others into sub-topics?

Hey Khashyar, you mentioned in the "Spam" thread about starting a new thread for improvements to RMP, but upon looking I found there already was one! So I will resurrect it.

The thought that I had was this - how about a special section for "trip reports", perhaps divided by city. (most members enjoy reading trip reports!)For example if I was planning a trip to Kiev, I could look up the trip reports from that city. It might be especially relevant as the report (besides being an interesting read!) might also have information on restaurants, local agency's, local tourist attractions etc.

This is a very good idea freebird, I will speak to K about setting up a travel section and then moving all the trip reports to a country list with city sub sections.

Posted by: azamuner

That is a good idea Freebird! I'm sure we're all enjoying TheWongs posts, although I want him to post more often because he always leaves ya hangin.

I would also like to see stories like that here as it not only entertains but is valuable information for those of us that are new to the UW/RW scene.

I think that is the problem I found, Azamuner, is that most trip reports are lost after a few weeks or months, except if you happen to stumble on them in the archives. Thats how I found Raspberrys "TR" from Dnepro & Zaprozya region, which was very informative because I was starting to use the same agency (Cindy's) that he had used, so his experience with them was very helpful. But now, if I want to check something in his report, I have to "search" keywords to find it, or click on his "Other posts" and go back through all his postings.

Ok I was also thinking about the medals on RMP. Could there not be one for 2,000 posts? And how about a medal for travel to Russia/Ukraine/FSU - for example if one has made 5 or 6 trips over there?

Hi I was just wondering if it turned out this idea was workable?

Are these medals automatically generated? I noticed there is one for 500 posts but I didn't receive it.

Posted by: goforit

How about RSS feeds?

Posted by: blucatz

I don't know if it has been mentioned yet, don't feel like reading the whole thread, live chat. Have an IM linked to the site so when 2 people start posting pop shots at each other they can do it live instead of wasting thread space. Plus would be nice to talk idle chit chat with some of the members here without using thread space also or being told we are hijacking someones thread.

No they aren't automated. I'll let the administrator know you are due a medal.

Congrats on your 500 posts goforit! Here's to the next 500!

blu just incase you haven't cottoned on yet there are idle chit chat threads in each countries/continents sections. I think the American one is called "The Pit" or something like that.
As for Pot Shots, that's gonna happen especially when so much testosterone gets flowing.
