Reading Russian language (Cyrillic) text accurately in an email (instead of gibberish

I have been asked a couple of times about how to make an email with Cyrillic (Russian) text readable, and not have it display some kind of gibberish text.

Here are the instructions for reading Cyrillic (Russian) text in an email that is within an Internet Explorer window (for example, Hotmail or Yahoo email that you read in an Internet Explorer window).

1) Open the Cyrillic (Russian) encoded email in an Internet Explorer window

2) Go to the top left hand corner of the IE window, and click on "view."

3) Move your curser down to the "encoding" option.

4) With your curser, choose the Cyrillic encoding that works with the Cyrillic format that was sent to you. These formats include: "Cyrillic (Windows)," "Cyrillic (KOI8-R)", and "Cyrillic (KOI8-U)." If you don't see the necessary Cyrillic encoding options, then choose the "more" option, and other Cyrillic encoding options will be displayed.

5) Try these formats one at a time until you can see readable Cyrillic text inside the email message window (instead of gibberish text).

If you wish, you can then copy and paste the Russian text in a translation program (like "Prompt") so that you can get some sense of what your Russian language email says.

Ok, I have a major, well to me anyway, problem happening here. One of the Russian ladies I am currently corresponding with has written to me both in English and in Russian so I can learn Russian more effectively. God Bless Her Cotton Sox. Now to the Problemo. She has written to my Hotmail addy which is fine as it is the addy I give out to weed out the wheat from the chaff so to speak, but my Hotmail addy just puts giberish in place of Cyrillic. I have tried the above suggestions, tried every encoding available to my 2 web browsers. I Explorer 6 point whatever, and Firefox 1.5 and still nothing comes up with any sense. Any help given is greatly appreciated.

Me too!
I askek to specifically receive an email in russian as I thought it might make life easier for the writer..
All her emails come across as in Cyrillic (KOI8-R) (the email page) even though she has translated them into English.
Yet when she wrote me directly, un translated, i got the following....

??? ??????? ?????????? ????,
? ????????? ?? ??????.
???? ?????? ???? ??????,
??????? ? ?????? ? ??????.

? ????? ???? - ??? ????,
??? ???????? ?????? ?????.
?? ??????, ?? ?? ???????.
??? ????? ?????? ?????????!

? ??? ???? ? ????? ?? ????
???? ??????? ?????.
????? ????????? ???????,
???????, ??? ? ? ?????? ????.

???????, ??????? ? ????,
???? ??????? ???????.
??????? - ?????, ???????,
???? ?????? ??? ???????????.

?????????? ?????, ????????? ???,
????? ?????? ?? ???, -
?????? ? ???????. ?? ????????
?? ????????? - ??? ?.

Now I don't mind watching wheel of fortune from time to time but I don't think I have nearly enough money to buy enough vowels here...

UNLESS,
she was asking an awful lot of questions....

Thats a very comprehensive site Connor.

I also used to get ?????? ? ?????? ????????. And my GF had to save the Russian text in a word document and attatch it.

I currently use AOL (not for much longer) Now I receive multilingual HTML:
Ñ ÖÅÌÁÀ ÔÅÂÅ ÉÍÅÔØ ËÒÁÓÉ×ÙÊ ×ÅÞÅÒ

But at least you can cut and paste it straight into a translator like IM: http://www.translation.imtranslator.net/ (remember to tick the decode box)

Many webmail clients don't decode or handle foreign language fonts very well.

Use Outlook or Outlook Express, and an email address where you can get your mail from a POP server.

Oz, here is what I would try..

1. Install thunderbird on your pc..

2. Forward the email from hotmail to your "good" email address.

3. open it in thunderbird

4. Try changing the font option to see if that makes any difference to the output.

I have no idea if this will work but it's possible. The big question is will hotmail send a font output it doesn't understand or will it try to replace what it sees. If it acts dumb this should work. If it tries to be clever it won't.
