An interesting day (also "you've been studying too much when...")

Today was an interesting day....

I had to take my mother to her doctor's appointment so while I was waiting for her I took my daughters to Griffith park....

While I was there I noticed a lady that somehow seemed Russian.... and sure there are a lot of Russians and Armenians in that area.

Well, sure enough she was helping her son onto one of the toys in the park and I could recognize some Russian words as she spoke into her phone.

So I said to her "vi rooska?". She said (with a puzzled look upon her face) "yes".

I said "I thought so, I recognized a few words... Ya uschus govorit pa rooski (I learn to speak in Russian)"

She said "WHY????" (I kinda wanted to laugh)

So I told her I had a Russian fiance.

She said "You've been to Russia?"

I said "Yes"

Now that suprised her even more

So I told her I had been to Omsk.

Well, you know you've been studying Russian too much and noticing certain subtlties too much when you can start identifying them, LOL

Ha ha! I do the same. At work, I've already identified a couple of women who work there who are Russian. (One is actually from Belarus and the other is from St. Petersburg) I've managed to introduce myself in Russian and caught them off guard. It was pretty funny.

I was at the Toyota dealership in Irvine when I ran into Alex who, again, was Russian. I spoke a little Russian to him! And when I was at the Keyes Audi in Van Nuys a few months back, I spoke Russian to a Boris. Seems like, now that I've studied and recognize Russian, that I'm actually finding more Russian speaking people! Won't Olga be happy!

I had to smile at this thread. These kind of things happen to me all the time...and I love it. The more time I spend with Russians, the more I am able to recognize them by their appearance only. And that is pretty cool. Of course I hang with people that can tell the difference between a Russian and a Ukrainian simply by looking at them. I'm nowhere near that point.

Thanks for the post searcher.

You're welcome.

Now what suprised me was that she actually understood what I had said

Sometimes I make mistakes or get nervous when I try to speak Russian.

Wow! I spent 35 years of my life in Russia - and I cannot do that!

Interesting to meet other Russians.......or hear them when they think you dont understand the language.

Near our house every Sunday morning is held a large Car boot sale where people sell all their surplus junk and things they no longer need.

A couple of weeks ago My wife and me decided to do our own.

In the car space next to us was a guy selling a Wicker cane dining table and 4 chairs........I estimate new it cost around £250.00 (about $455.00)

He was selling it for just £25.00 about $53.00 and was obviously a bargain.

As the morning went on the place got very busy and soon it was bustling with people.

A voice rang out which prompted my wife to nudge me.

"they are Russians and theyre talking about the table and chairs "

They stood gesturing and after a few words walked away.

The guy selling the items, being only 2 metres away, turned to me and said "they seemed to be very interested but I couldnt understand what they were saying.....maybe they will come back "

I asked my wife to tell me what the Russians had been saying and she said that they had been quite unpolite !!!

On dolzhen shutit', kto potratit horoshiye den'gi na etom der'me

It made me laugh.................The poor guy didnt have a clue
