I just return a week ago from Ukraine, interesting trip I spent a lot of time with my girl's younger brother, because she was busy with her child. One day he asked if I wanted to be part of a "Demonstration" at the City Administration building. I asked, what are we opposing, he said Youchenko has raised taxes for small business. I asked, do I have to worry about any of the following, brutal police, long term confinment,,goolog in Sibre, fire hoses, or guard dogs. He said coneshna neit, of course not, its peaceful. Ok, I'm like a burned out hippie turned capitalist anyways : ) SO here's the deal, we met maybe 300 other University students at the adjacent park, where the Political action group, gives us hats, and flags, and a promise of 20 Grevna to participate for 2 hours. We walk to City Administration, do our little bit, a few speakers,,translation,,something like no new taxes (read my lips). We return to the park where there is another demontraction as we wait for our 20 Grevna We get our $4,, stop at the umm,,,carryout,,, peva magazine !! lol ANd the guys and gals from the University spend the rest of the day in the park, drinking beer,, I had Coke ! becaue I was the designated,,umm,, Parent!
Interesting city Dnepropetrovsk, I always felt pretty safe, smiling faces every where I went, a lot of open containers people drinking all day,,but happy people, content for the most part, Smoking ever where, sidewalks littered badly. Even on Karla Marxa street. My girl was pretty protective of me, didn't let me wander the town without escort ( that she new about !! lol) I stayed in a flat just off Karla Marxa st. she lives in a sleeping region, on nites where I left her home and returned to my flat she would insist to pay the taxi before I left, it was 20 Grevna $4,, so I wouldn't get ripped off for like 22 Grevna ( like the $.50 was gonna kill me ?)
Well, if any of you guys haven't gone, it was a lovely trip, watch the food,,it taste great, but sometimes the translation is difficult : )

The people you saw on TV everynite in Kiev during the "Orange" revolution, many were also University student,,paid to demonstrate, like I was paid to demonstrate, the University guys told me they's get like 50 Grevna, or some $20 a day, plus like food and other freebees, clothes, firewood,,ouch it was cold !

Some may have been, but far from all (and likely not the majority). I have friends and relatives who participated in the demonstrations in Kyiv and who were most certainly NOT paid to do so (one a university teacher who joined the demonstration with her students--also not paid). But, yes, I wouldn't doubt that some may have been, although this is more common in smaller scale demonstrations (and that was the case long before the Orange Revolution--usually "special interest groups" bused people into Kyiv from the surrounding villages).
