Sorry to start a new thread guys, but I have not been able to find anything that this subject would go under. I have a slight problem and I was hoping that maybe you guys might be able to help me with it.

I have my trip to Ukraine planned for this September, to the city of Mariupol. That part is easy. My problem is this. I have been trying to find information about Mariupol but have been unable to find it. Is there a place where I can find out more about this city? Or maybe somebody has been to MAriupol and can tell me about their trip?

Please, any and all information will be gladly recieved as I want to know as much about Ludmila's native city as I can. I'm a secret romantic and I am trying to honor her by learning Ukraine's customs and about her home city. But don't tell anyone, I have a rep to maintain!! JK!

Oh, also, we are meeting in Kyiv before going to her home city of Mariupol and I was wondering if anybody knew anything about apratments for rent there. I have checked out the Cherborn Guesthouse but that was suggested by an agency and I would like to be able to look into other apartments just to satisfy my own curiosity. Again, any and all information would be great!!!!

Keystone! Talk to Keystone.

His fiancee is from Mariupol and he has been there several times.

Thanks!! But there is just oneproblem. Who is Kerstone and how do I get in touch with him?

Also, does anybody have any ideas about what to do while I am in Kyiv? Adivce, anything?

Oh, I can give you lots of info on Kyiv (except for apartments)...

Keystone is a member here. If he doesn't see your thread, try sending him a private message. Just go to the members bar in the middle of the page and search under "K." Once you get to his profile, you will have the option of sending a PM. I doubt he will mind--he's a very nice guy

OK Jill..... TALK!!!

I sent in for my visa and now waiting.. I plan on going to Kiev late June to early July and would like to know what to see.. I will be lucky as the lady is taking off work and will show me around

But, it would be good to know what to see before getting there...

And is someone does have apartment advice........

Ah, we will miss each other. I will be there the first week of June. But there is so much to see and do in Kiev--it is a wonderful city. What are you interested in? History? Clubs? Theater? Of course, you will want to walk on Khreshatyk on Saturday night where there will be many people strolling and watching te many street performers (some very good musicians actually play there--mainly covers of popular Russian rock songs--also jugglers, clowns, breakdancers, etc). Unfortunately, you will probably be too late for the chestnut trees to be in bloom

You will also want to visit Pecherska lavra (with its catacombs--but don't visit them if you are at all claustrophobic). This is right next to the WWII museum (it's in the round base of the large Soviet statue of an iron woman). There is also a Chernobyl museum, a Cossack history museum, a Ukrainian history museum, a Kiev history museum, a Russian art museum, a Bulgakov museum, a natural history museum.....

For souvenirs, you can go to Andreevskyy spusk. But definitely have your girlfriend negotiate, or you will be robbed blind.

For a fairly fun bar, try 44 on Khreshatyk (owner by the famous German expat Eric--if you like it, also try Eric's Bierstube on Krasnoarmeeskii)). Also Baraban on Proriznaya (my personal favorite, if only for the garlic cheese bread ).

You can go to Hydropark--if you like fairly crappy beaches But you can do shashlik there. Although, for a better shashlik location, try Puscha voditsa.

LOTS of restuarants in Kiev. Khuturok has good (if overpriced) Ukrainian food. Also Taras (in Shevchenko park) is nice in the summertime--also overpriced Ukrainian food. Mimino has passable Georgian cuisine, Tequila House has hit or miss Mexican, and then there's the expat favorite Arizona's which is something that a Texan such as yourself might be somewhat uncomfortable calling Tex Mex (although it is pretty good, in my opinion) And then there's TGIFridays--don't need to explain that one to you. For pizza, I recommend Patio Pizza (next to Fridays), or Cillentano's. Although, I guess you're not going all the way to Ukraine to eat pizza

There's good theater and opera/ballet in Kiev--just check the schedule. Speaking of which there is an English language newspaper called the Kyiv Post (you can find it online) that usually has weekend events listings. There's also a magazine called What's On (also in English).

OH! And day trips! Pirigovo I HIGHLY recommend (but go on a day with nice weather). Also Sofiyika (in Uman) would be a nice, romantic trip for you and your lady friend. If you're interested in a weekend trip--try Odessa or Lviv.

OH! And there is a big annual fourth of July picnic sponsored by the American Chamber of Commerce (it's held on a Saturday, so check the date for this year). Defintely go (if the weather is good)--it's usually a lot of fun--music, food, beer, a raffle, games, fireworks....

Jill, one of my favorite restaurants in Kiev was I believe the tsars hut. Couldn't find it the last time it least not the one I wanted. Located outside the city. Old cabin type decorations with many dusty stuffed animals. Entertainment was by what looked like old type warriors with ponytail and mostly shaved heads. They whistled like birds and did other impressive stuff. Do you know this place?
Kiev also had a motorcycle restaurant with suicide shift indians and BMW among others hanging on the walls. This one closed last I was there.
I also saw a documentary on TV that showed a hut made from wooly mamoth tusks but never found anyone there that heard of this.
There is so much to see there.

I think I may know what you mean, but I have never been there. It seems that Eric opened such a resturant/bar, called, perhaps, "The Cave"? If you see an "Eric's Group" ad, you might be able to find it--again, I'm not sure if that's the one you mean.

Do you mean Deja vu? If so, I didn't realize that it had closed....Or is this something different?

Don't think I've been there. There is a resturant called "Tsar's Village"--but that is located in Pechersk, if I recall correctly (also Ukrainian themed, but seemingly less exotic than the one you describe ).

I don't remember the name. It was below street level. I took many photos and even had the waitress take some of us. On the way out I remember noticing a no photos sign. OOPs
We ended up at this tsars hut but it wasn't the same as the one I wanted.
