The Russian Meeting Place: A place to meet people and talk about all things Russian...
International Discussions about Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Travel, Music, Russian News, Ukrainian culture, Belarusian Dating, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kiev and other intelligent topics about life in the former Soviet Union.
I thought it would be useful for us to be able to check the current world times in the forums, perhaps when we wanted to call someone in Russia or a different country, so I just added a "current world times" display for different cities in Russia as well as around the world which will display the current time for that particular city.
The Russian cities (including Minsk and Kiev) are highlighted in a different color so that we can find them more easily.
To check the different times, just click on the map image at the bottom of the forum front page.
Please let me know if you think that it would be better to also include some other important cities of the former Soviet Union...

Its a nice feature you put at the front.
However I am a little disapointed. We are minimum 2 danes here and Copenhagen is not at the list. Instead is there Amsterdam and Zurich and I have failed to notice any from these countries.
I just added Copenhagen, Stockholm and Paris... So hopefully our Danish members will feel more at home
I think that most people will want the world time feature to look up times in different ex-Soviet countries, but it also makes sense to add other countries of significance there as well.

Nice feature. But the time for Sydney, Melbourne is 2 hours too fast!
Sorry!

Hi tonton...
Thanks for the information....
I moved Sydney and Mebourne into the +10 GMT timezone...
Shouldn't it be the same time in Sydney as in Vladivostok?
Or, do they handle daylight savings time differently?

Hi Khashyar,
Vladivostok is an hour ahead of east coast Australia, and our daylight saving time is over as we are heading into winter.
It seems that even though Vladivostok and Sydney are noth listed as +10 GMT, they must have daylight savings time at different times.
I will have to figure out how to adjust the times...

That is a cool feature! Thanks for the effort Khasyar!

Thanks, Mike...
I believe that the way that the particular software that presents the time zones is written, it calculates the times in each timezone by adding the GMT hour difference to that time zone from where the website server is located (in the U.S.).
So, there might be a couple of weeks in the year where the times in different countries might be one hour off because daylight savings time is different in Australia, for example, than in the United States or Vladivistok.
The only way to change this is to create a script that gets the time from the time servers in each country, and I would have to figure out how to do that...
If anyone has suggestions as to how to do this, then please let me know
But, this timezone chart will be almost always accurate.
I'll still do some research.

Hi again....
I found out how to pull times from atomic time servers in different countries....
I am going to have to write a script and create a page that will show the correct time in those countries to the second...
It might take me a while to do that... but the current timezone page is almost always accurate (although some cities may be one hour off when they observe a daylight savings time that is different than in American).

Hi Everyone,
I spent today writing a program that retrieves the time from an atomic clock in Russia, and then gives the accurate times all throughout the former Soviet Union....
I am still probably going to make some changes in some of the pages style, but....
Well, one immediate change: at the top it says "Current Times in Russian Cities." However, Minsk, Kiev, Yerevan, Baku, Tashkent, and Almaty are not in Russia So "FSU" or "Eurasia" or something more general would probably be better.

Let me know if you have any other suggestions for the FSU times page.....
For example, additional cities to add, different colors, etc...
